Our Favorite Baby Name Sibsets Starting with W

First post of this series, with longer explanation, here.

You can choose any number of siblings, any number of boys/girls. This might be TOO broad in scope and, as we play, we might come up with better guidelines. But for now, the idea is that we are imagining a little sibling set of children (they do not have to be our own children), and all of their names are going to start with the same letter, and we will just see how things go from there. As before, you can say as much or as little as you like about your decision-making process, and you can choose multiple sibling sets (“This is what I’d choose for two girls, this is what I’d choose for three boys, this is what I’d choose for one boy and one girl…”) or just one—whatever is most fun / whatever you have the time and energy for on that particular day. I liked the idea some people had of re-naming their actual children with matching initials. (I am not going to attempt that with the more difficult letters.)

Today we work on the letter W. When we played the previous game with W, I chose Winifred and Warren, and I like those fine as a sibling set. I also liked Willemina and William, which I wouldn’t use together, but would use one or the other. And I like Wesley and Winston and Wilson; Wilson joins the Willemina/William group, and I wouldn’t put Winston and Winifred in the same sibling set. Normally I would prefer not to use names as far apart in popularity/style as William and Warren, but I might like it better if they were separated by other siblings: as I had more and more children, I became more relaxed about things like that. For example: William, Winifred, Wesley, and Warren.

Oh! This is the first letter where I have enough names to play it that I am re-naming my existing children! Okay, okay! Then it would be Wesley-called-Wes, William, Winifred, Warren, and…hm. No, I run out of boy names, because after I use William I don’t want to use Wilson, and after I use Winifred I don’t want to use Winston. But that’s okay! Close enough!

I have a friend who just had baby Watson and already has a Wrenleigh.
But I would choose Whitaker and Wendy.
    Or Willa and Wade.

In real life, I have a boy and a girl, so that’s usually my go-to for sibsets, although in another life I think I would’ve had three kids, so since I can think of three I will go with that.
    Wilhelmina, Walter and Winifred
    Wilhelmina, Walter and Wolfgang

*in imaginary-naming-land, my inability to pronounce “Wolf” correctly wouldn’t hold me back from using it.

For a boy, I love Wilbur and William. I’d have to choose one though and would probably go with William.

Winnie is wonderful for a girl and I’m torn better classic Winifred and modern Winter. Maybe William and Winifred called Will and Winnie?

I have twin girls and I think I would struggle to name them with W initials. Willow & Wren share an initial but not the same opening sound and I love that. In real life, I prefer to go a little more classic but I do like that pair.

Random number generator gave me 3 kids, 2 boys and 1 girl.

    William, Winifred, and Wolfgang
    or
    Wilhelmina, Wagner, and Wolfgang

Once you start naming a sibset some very Germanic names, you gotta keep with the trend. First kid would get the Wil- name and the other sibling changes from there, but dang I like Wolfgang a lot.

Ah W is a lot more fun! So… I think I’m going to play it like the imaginary ‘ideal’ family I would have. We stopped at 2 but I still dream of a third and I won’t lie, that’s partly because of all the good names that still need using up!

So I think I would use Wren, Whitman and Willa. I also really like William/Will but obviously Will and Willa are a no-go!

I love Winona and Winifred, not sure if I would actually ever use these or use them together but they are sure would be a fun pair!

Wesley James and Wyatt Wayne were our choices.
We didn’t have girl names so I’m drawing a blank there. Wila and Willow would be fun. It makes me imagine sprites.

And now I have a big problem! Because the only W names I truly love are Wilhelmina and Wilhelm/William/Will. I am all for individuality so I definitely wouldn’t like any sibset to be this matchy. But I wonder, if I called William Billy or Will (he’d be a William, as William and Wilhelmina sound slightly less extreme than Wilhelm and Wilhelmina) and Wilhelmina would be Helmi or Minnie, would that be passable? Plus if Wilhelmina would be pronounced with a V as that’s my favourite pronunciation anyway? Perhaps that would only cause more trouble. I’m not sure, so in real life I’d probably ask the daddy. But in case it’s not passable… Hm, I quite like Willow. :D No, just kidding, I do like it but of course wouldn’t use it with William. I kind of like our Polish Weronika, only due to positive associations. I hate its popularity, and that it’s so often mixed up with Wiktoria (even I myself mix them up sometimes) and I hate how often it’s nicknamed to Wera, but I guess this is the only other option for a girl that I could live with. Winnie is quite nice, but I only like it as a nickname for something longer and not Winifred, preferably Gwendolyn, which obviously doesn’t start with a W. Otherwise, for a boy, I guess I could use Wulf or Wyn. Since both Wilhelmina and Wulf feel heavily Germanic, I’d probably go with Wynn if I’d have a Wilhelmina.
So, my final sibsets are: Wilhelm and Weronika, Wilhelmina and Wynn, and William and Wynn.

This is hard because my favorites are William and Willa, which obviously doesn’t work.

    William and Wren
    Willa and Wren
    William and Walter

I didn’t realize how many W names I really like until I scrolled through all of the comments! Re-naming my kiddos (B-B-G) as: Walter, Wyatt, and Winnie

William (Bill/Billy) and Winnie. I’d probably use Winnie as the full name, but I do like Winifred very much.

Winifred, Willa, Waverly, Wren, Wave (after a great aunt)
Wesley, William, Ward, Warren, Whit, Wynn

Many to choose from, hard to match a boy, girl, boy, girl set. I hate that William basically lets out Willa and vice versa, but I like having two with matching vowel sounds followed by two more with different matching vowel sounds, so:

    William, Winifred, Wesley, and Wren

    Yorek, Yolanda, Yardley, and Yvette
    Zachary, Zelda, Zane, and Zoe

My choices for W were Winifred and Winston, which I wouldn’t use for siblings. Winston is my favorite, so I’d go with that, and Willa. Also love Wesley and Wells. I could happily name a family full of W siblings. If only my last name didn’t start with W. 😆

Favourite W names are Willow and William but I wouldn’t name siblings that. I struggle to find any other boy names I like to go with Willow and can’t, so I think I’d have to put her aside and keep William.

    William and Waverly

Probably Willa, Whittaker (Whit) and Wynn (Winnie for a nickname). Those are awfully similar, but still my favorite set, I think.

I love W- names. We used Wolf for my son’s middle name as it’s my maiden name, but I’d gladly use it as a first.

For a sibset I like Wolf and Wren. Or Waverly and Weston. All boys I would do Wolf, Wynn and Wells. Or if it was a bunch of girls it would be Waverly, Wren and Winnie. Or maybe Winsley, Wells and Wolf for a mixed set of 1 girl and 2 boys.
