Baby Boy Menegon, Brother to Hazel and Frederick

Hi Swistle,
Sorry to be a pest but baby boy was born extremely unexpectedly at 33 weeks yesterday!

Currently nameless šŸ˜šŸ¤

Would you mind taking a look over my email below and kindly imparting your wisdom?

Thank you ever so much,

Jaydee Menegon

Hi Swistle,

Iā€™m reaching out for help with naming our third baby due mid July,
So far we have a Hazel Mae (4) and a Frederick Joseph (2). This will likely be our last babe and we donā€™t know if itā€™s a boy or a girl. My gut says boy.
Our surname is Menegon (husbands family is from northern Italy).

We both like classic names, and donā€™t mind nicknames. Well, I say that but itā€™s extremely difficult to get husband on board with any type of theme or genre. Iā€™m very lucky we have Hazel and Freddie who I think go perfectly together. Baby boy names that appeal to me are

Albert (Bertie)
Herbert (Herb or Bertie)
Winston (Win, Winnie)
Walter (Walt)
Abraham (Abe)
Roman
Monty

Middle name likely to be from this list also as we donā€™t have any family names we wish to use

Girls short list is
Olive Maude / Maude Olive
Winslow
Winter
Mabel

Again, girl middle names are open for discussion.

I would love to use Olive in there somewhere as it was my grandmothers name, and after a rather unfortunate case of ā€˜name stealingā€™ just before Hazel was born I feel ready to use it again. I do like old fashioned, vintage and slightly out of the ordinary names. Also wouldnā€™t mind some alliteration this time around.

My husband has a habit of strongly rejecting names (ie Frederick) and then completely forgetting and coming on board in the delivery room, so I feel as though his preliminary opinions arenā€™t worth too much. We both have plain strong first names.

Thank you so much for your time

Jaydee

I won’t linger on this one since we are abruptly out of time (welcome, baby!), but a few quick things:

Since this is likely your last baby, and you were hoping to honor your grandmother Olive, I wonder if you would like to put Oliver in there somewhere, either as first or middle? (If as a middle, I would probably avoid initials DOM, MOM, VOM, and I would have to consider how I felt about COM, NOM.)

My own favorites from your list are Albert, Winston, and Walter.

Other names I might consider with a Hazel and a Frederick:

Alistair
Arthur
Barnaby
Charles
Edmund
Edward
Elliot
George
Gilbert
Harvey
Howard
John
Karl
Laurence
Louis
Miles
Paul
Robert
Russell
Stanley
Vincent
Warren
Wesley

Name update:

Hi Swistle,

Firstly thank you so much for posting in my time of need! Baby boy is doing so well and is completely off breathing support. With any luck in the next couple of weeks he will take to breast / bottle feeding and we can make our way home from hospital as a family of 5!

I truly appreciated all of your suggestions. I couldnā€™t commit to Oliver whilst I still had a .1% chance of #4 (although I know I said 3 was our number haha)

Introducing, with love, our little fighter Walter Albert, adored little brother to Hazel Mae and Frederick Joseph

Thank you very much again,

Jaydee and Grant xx

Congrats on the birth of your son. I love alliteration so I think Monty Oliver sounds wonderful with your last name. All of your boy names are great but Herbert is so unexpected and lovely. A few others that I think pair well with Hazel and Frederick, with some overlap from Swistle’s suggestions: Lawrence, Stuart, Harvey and Bernard. Good luck!

I had the exact same thought about Oliver! Love Winston, Winston Oliver M. Hazel, Frederick, and Winston. Or Walter. I like that the sounds are all different.

From Swistle’s list I like Elliot and Arthur.

I would add Henry or Edwin to the list. Edwin would also give you a Win nickname like Winston. Edwin Oliver M.

I love Swistle’s idea of Oliver, I think it goes wonderfully with Hazel and Frederick! Freddie and Ollie sound adorable together! I think all your ideas are great but I particularly love Albert and Walter for you. Some of my favorite pairs are: Albert Winston, Herbert Walter, and Monty Abraham. Good luck and congrats on your new edition!

I too love the idea of Oliver if there’s zero chance of a future Olive.
I love Walter and Winston with Hazel and Freddie. I would add Clarence, and I love Clancy as it’s nickname.
Walter Laurence, Winston Oliver, Clarence Oliver

My first thought was Oliver, I love that idea.
I think Roman doesn’t fit as well, and I like Monty but prefer it as a nickname for Montgomery.
I like Albert and Herbert, but I pronounce Bertie as Birdie, and don’t really care for that.
My favorites are Winston and Abraham. Either of those would work with a middle name of Oliver (or Oliver as a first name with one of those as the middle!), and work with siblings names and last name. I also like Walter if you go with a different name, but don’t love Walter Oliver together.

We have very similar styles! I have an August nn Gus, and our next will probably be Freddie, Walter, or Edwin if it’s a boy. So I love Walter for you!

    Huge congratulations!

Bertram is one of my favorite names, similar to Albert.

If you don’t like Oliver as an honor name for your grandmother, maybe something more indirect meaning peace? Absalom, Geoffrey, Paxton, Solomon, Wilfred, etc? On the other hand, Frederick’s meaning is already connected to peace, so maybe that can be a retroactive connection to your grandmother.

I like Roman best, but Walter is nice, too, and fits very nicely into the sibling set. And I’m all for Oliver either as the middle or even the first.

I like the idea of Oliver as a middle too. My favourite from your list is Walter, particularly with your last name. Not crazy about it with Oliver in the middle though. Any chance you’d consider Olive as a middle for a boy? Divisive, I know, but Olive isn’t frilly-feminine and it is a word name, so maybe it could work.

    Ideas for M names:
    Malcolm (nn Mac, Cole, Cal)
    Marcel (nn Mars, Marc)
    Morris (nn Mo, Morry, Moss)
Murray (not too sure about nicknames, but it recently jumped out at me as an unexpected vintage boy name!)
I like Monty on its own, but if you want a longer form there’s also Montague

I also like Winston from your list. From Swistle’s list I like Laurence (love the nn Laurie!) Louis, Miles, Paul, and Stanley, and I think the other commenter’s suggestion of Edwin.

    Congrats!

I have a Frederick (nickname Freddie) too and we like similar boys names. We had Walter on our top list.

I love Winston with the nn Win and I think it would be a front runner if we werenā€™t done having babies. Thatā€™s my fav of your picks (and Walter). Other names we considered:

    Bertram
    Harvey
    Wallace
    Gilbert
    Alistair
    Leander
    Leon
    Victor
    Vincent
    Vernon
    Reginald (Reggie)

Congrats on your new baby I hope heā€™s doing well!

Walter!!! Use Walter!!! šŸ˜ I like Walter Abraham. As a bit of a curveball, what about using the dee for your name? Walter Dee. I love it!

If you like swistle’s suggestion of Oliver for a middle name, then I also like Winston. Winston Oliver.

Archer, nickname Archie. Maybe middle name James? Archer James.

    Hazel, Freddie, and Archie. Adorable!

Oh I love the idea of Oliver in the middle! You mentioned name theft so I assume that takes it further from Olive too.

You really do have lots of great options. Iā€™m guessing the wee person didnā€™t give you any hints of his name? For the sibset and with the surname, my vote is Walter or Monty – though a longer form like Montgomery or Beaumont might be more fitting with his formal brother?

    Good luck!

Clive was a strong favorite of mine and it reminds me of your naming style. Clive Oliver Menegon feels like perfection to me!

Congrats on your baby boy .
Another vote for Oliver! And from your list Walter. Another name I love and think works with your sibset is Vincent. Vincent Oliver or Oliver Vincent or even Vincent Abraham.

    Oliver <3
    Oscar
    Roland
    Nathaniel
    Chester
    Leonard / Leonardo
    Salvatore (too Italian?)
I would say Howard to get Howie so you'd have a Howie and a Freddie, but then he'd share an initial with Hazel.

Congratulations. I hope you are both well.

Since you like Monty – I know a boy called Mortimer (Mort) which I love.

I also know of a family with Frederick + Sebastian and Vincent. Do you like either of those?

I had the thought about Oliver but maybe it is too common for a first name. I know a man named Alby (Albert) so that is my choice from your list :)

Picking up on your comment about alliteration, may I suggest Maxwell, Magnus ‘Gus’ and Marvin. You might like Rupert or Ernest, similar to Albert and Herbert. There’s also Graham ‘Gray’ and Ambrose ‘Bo’ sharing similar sounds to Abraham. You seem to like names with the ‘b’ sound in the middle, so perhaps you’d like Wilbur, Robin ‘Bobbie’ or Albion ‘Albie’.

All the best with your little one!

Had baby been a girl I would have suggested Sylvie or Sylvia. Hazel, Freddie and Sylvie.

I don’t suppose Sylvester would be your style? Very uncommon and old fashioned. I just don’t know what nickname you’d use. Syl?

Maybe Sebastian or Sidney (Sid) would work better?

I like Winston the most from your list. Also some really good ideas in the comments – Edwin and Clarence especially.

    Congratulations!

I feel like we have a similar naming style. My daughter’s middle name is Hazel and Frederick was on our short list each time. Other boy names that I like:
    Sebastian
    Roland
    August
    Byron
    Vincent
    Ezra
    Nathaniel
    Russel
    Abel
Although I noticed you have Winston on your boy list and Winslow on your girl list, so I wonder if this baby just really wants to be “Win” and Winston is the name.
Congratulations on your new baby boy!

We have similar taste because Hazel is at the top of my favorite girl name list! And Winston is a fav for a boy. So I say Winston Oliver!
