Our Favorite Baby Names Starting with D

Here is the game we are playing:

We are going to pretend that we are naming a baby and that the name MUST start with a certain letter, and so we will need one name starting with that letter for a boy and one name starting with that letter for a girl, or else one name that would work for either, EVEN IF we don’t like any of the names that start with that letter enough to Actually In Real Life choose them. It is just a game where we place artificial restrictions on reality in order to create the kind of tension that makes games fun—like when you have to choose what foods you’d eat if you could only eat three foods for the rest of your life: the fun is in thinking it over AS IF it were a real forced decision, while KNOWING it is not. There is a baby! It MUST be given a name with a particular letter! That is the game.

After that basic concept, we can decide our own sub-rules, based on what makes the game fun and not stressful. Some examples:

• I’m not planning to play that the name has to fit with the names of my other children or with the surname, though this would be an option for anyone who would LIKE to play it that way; I think I will have more fun if I pretend it is a stand-alone baby and that the surname is not an issue, though I may change my mind as we go. (And if I narrow it down to a few options and can’t decide, I might use siblings/surname as a tie-breaker.)

• It is also fine to narrow it down to a few finalists without getting to The One Name.

• The boy name and girl name don’t have to work TOGETHER: we are only naming ONE baby, so you’d only use one or the other. But you MAY play that the names have to work together, if that’s more fun.

• It is fine to wave aside issues such as a friend who already used that name, a famous person with the name, etc., if that makes it more fun and less stressful to choose. This is just pretend, so you can pretend that those things aren’t issues if you want to. (Or you can let the issues stand as they are in real life, if THAT is more fun.)

• We can also all make our own decisions about whether the names have to be ones we think we’d ACTUALLY USE in that hypothetical scenario, or just our FAVORITE names starting with that letter, regardless of whether we think the names are practical; I am not sure which way I will play it, and I likely won’t be consistent.

• If you already have a child with a name starting with the letter we’re working on, you get to pick again from all the names that remain; you don’t have to choose your child’s name as your favorite just because it WAS your favorite: this is a FRESH baby, and you wouldn’t give it the same name as your existing child. (If you would normally prefer not to repeat an initial within a sibling group, you can just pretend that’s NOT a preference for the sake of the game.)

• You can do as much or as little explanation as you like in your comment: you can just list the names you chose, or you can explain your process/preferences/reasoning/runners-up, or whatever is most fun.

Today’s letter is D. This was a bit of a challenge for me.

For girls, I like Delaney and Darby and Darcy, but for other people’s babies. I encountered a Delia in real life and it made a strongly positive impression on me, enough to put it on my list along with Dahlia—but I think I’d prefer it as a nickname for Cordelia. I’m drawn to Delphine, but would want it to be more common/familiar before I used it. I think I would choose Delia—except, no, immediately I pine for it to be short for Cordelia instead. So I choose Dahlia. No, Delphine. No, Dahlia.

For boys, I like Dean and Davis and Declan and Duncan and Desmond, but pretty much all for other people’s babies. I had Daniel on my list for each pregnancy, but we passed over it so many times, it has an odd feeling to me now. I think in the end we WOULD choose Daniel. I like the warm friendliness of the nickname Dan. I think I like the name Dean better, but I don’t like the job-title sound of it. Well, that’s the way my heart is tugging, so for this game I am choosing Dean! No, Declan.

Now you! If you want to! Only if it’s fun and not stressful! Feel free to adjust the game-play to be fun and not stressful!

I honestly might choose Dylan for a girl or a boy. That’s not usually my style but I’m feeling it! I knew a girl named Desley in high school and I always liked her name. Maybe Delaney. Or Delia.

    Ok, Boy: Dylan
    Girl: Delaney

I would use Dalila/Delilah as a middle name to honor my Grandma but I don’t have any D names that I love as a first name. I like Danika, so I’ll go with that.
For boys I don’t have any that I love also but I like Daniel.

Della was my fav girls name my husband would not go for. My daughter is absolutely her name now, but man, I LOVED Della.

Dexter for a boy, though I struggle with the connections to the show.

I’ve always like David quite a bit, but I have both a college boyfriend and a deceased uncle by that name. The ex and I are on friendly terms but he did break my heart and I was fond of the uncle, but not particularly close, so it would kind of awkwardly seem as if I were naming a baby after him when I really wouldn’t be. Dane’s good. I think I’d go with Dane.

For a girl I like Deirdre, but it means broken-hearted. I don’t pick names by the meaning but that’s a particularly bad one. I have the exact same thought process about Delia that you do, enough so that I’d have to pass it over for Diana, I think.

My best friend in high school was Derelyn, so I might choose that because I love her, but she struggled with people spelling or pronouncing it correctly so maybe not. I always liked David for a boy. Just a good strong sounding name.

We’ll just pretend that there’s a husband in the picture and we’re using his last name, because I don’t like the alliteration with my surname, and one name would be the same as a famous person (just different spelling).

Usually I can come up with way more girl names for a letter, but it’s the opposite with D! For a girl all I can think of that I like is Daisy. For a boy I like David, Dallas, Dax, Dexter and Dominic. I would probably pick Dominic!

I know a senior citizen named Dallas; it was pleasantly surprising to hear it on a guy older than my mother. It’s very much a name I associate with kids born after 1980

On my girl D list are a few names that got away. Almost used Daphne but when I was pregnant I saw my nieces’ school list and there were 5 Daphnes out of like 150 kids – must have been a strange pocket. Now I bet it’ll explode with Bridgerton! I’ve loved Delilah for a long time, but I let some comments about the religious association turn me off. And Dahlias are my fave flower but the multiple pronunciations! Although a little Dahlia nn Dolly would be amazing. I also think Davey on a girl is awesome – my cousin is Devin nn Davey and we know a Davis nn Davey.

There are actually a lot of cool D boys in my circle. Dane, Dallas, Donovan, Dexter. Love Dashiell nn Dash. Nashville made me love Deacon. Maybe Digby? Or Doyle? I dunno. Randomly choosing Dean.

    B: Dean

For girls, I love Delaney, Diana, Dakota, Della and Daphne, but on other people’s children. Dahlia is nice, but I associate it with the Black Dahlia Case. I do like Delilah quite a bit, particularly with the nickname Lilah or Lily. I also like Delia, but it feels like a bit of a strong choice for me. In the end, I pick Delilah.

For boys, I like Declan, Duncan, Dean, Dawson and Dashiell, but I’m not sure I’d actually use them in real life. I prefer them on other people’s children. I like David, particularly Davey, and would definetly consider it. Dylan is also nice, but not my favorite. I think I would end up going with Daniel, an old favorite of mine.

OH I also LOVE Daisy, but prefer it as a nickname for Margaret. I also like Davis, it feels softer than David, but is my late Uncle’s name, and it has some family baggage to it, but in a perfect world I might use it. But, I still prefer Daniel so I’m sticking with that.

Daniel or Devereaux for a boy but only for middle names.

I like the nickname Danny for a girl but don’t like any longer feminine form of it. I usually don’t like boy names on girls but I’d make an exception for Devin maybe. D just isn’t my letter when it comes to names but that’s ok.

D is a tough letter for me, I’m not really feeling excited about any of them. I think I’d go with Delilah for the game, although I’m not sure I’d feel comfortable with the religious connotations in real life. Dahlia or Delia as runners-up.
For boys, maybe Davis? I’d like Dexter on someone else, but it’s definitely not my style.

I have a Delia and it is my favourite of my four daughters’ names. I would choose it again and again. (Although I am amazed at how rarely people pronounce it correctly on the first try! We get A LOT of Deli-ah [deli like the meat] and Deh-LEE-ah [maybe because that emphasis mimics Delilah].)

For a boy I’m picking Dashiell or Davis.

I love Drew and Donna for girls, but I would probably choose Dorothy. I love the nicknames Dot or Dory or Ro and it just seems like such a solid, timeless name.

Diana or Delia for a girl. Both are honor names and I love them. I think the Wonder Woman tie would give a slight edge to Diana.

    David for a boy.

For a girl, I like Delia, but I prefer to pronounce it as in Della rather than with an ee, and I’m not sure I love it enough. Della is also beautiful, and there’s no pronunciation issue, but I’m still not sure I’d actually be happy with it as my child’s name. Delilah is amazing but the connection with the Biblical character does bother me a bit. I have a crush on Dulcibella, which I’d nickname to Dulcie, but I have no clue how practical it would be in real life… I’d really love a little Dulcie though… Then there are Welsh Delyth and Dilys which I also love. Okay, I think I’m going with Dulcibella nn Dulcie.
For a boy, the only two D names that come to my mind that I like are Declan and Daniel. I have a feeling that people who usually call their sons Daniel here in Poland don’t really have a similar style to mine, so I would feel weird calling my child this. And it’s really common in younger generations. And I don’t like Dan or Danny in English. So Declan is definitely the only option. I like the Celtic feel of it, the saintly connection, and some cool associations I have with it. What I dislike is the nickname Dec, and that it can’t be easily nicknamed to anything else that would appeal to me, but I’m willing to put up with it.

For boys, I already have a Dylan and I stand by that. It is still my favorite D boy’s name. However, I really like Davis too. The issue there is we took that as our family name. (Husband’s surname) So, in that instance, I would need to have a different last name.

    TLDR: Daniel, Dorothea
I am in the camp of a lot the commenters here, where I never expected to have much trouble with D names, because they are plentiful and all fine, but in actuality, I don’t really have much that I feel excited or engaged with. For boys we had Duncan on my first son’s name list. This doesn’t really mean much however, since I had decided on my first son’s name well before I was married and I simply made a list in case my husband vetoed it, which I thought he wouldn’t. I honestly think Duncan ended up on the list because Malcolm, Bruce, and Robert were on it, and I thought the 4 kingly names of Scotland should be represented. Still I like the name. David is also a promising name, I like it, and that it is both biblical and common enough not to be super duper religious. Daniel falls into the same category as David. I knew a Dan growing up who was both kind and smart. It could be much much worse. If push came to shove, I guess I choose Daniel.

Girls are even harder. I have positive historical associations with Dorothea and suppose I could call her Thea which I like. I think Deirdra is pretty. I have a tv related fondness for Daria. I suppose push come to shove I choose Dorothea.
I do feel kind of certain that I will remember a bunch of names that I like by watching this thread though.

D is a hard letter and I wasn’t really expecting it to be. For girls, I narrowed it down to Dahlia and Dorothea. I think I’ll pick Dahlia in the end, largely because I’ve been growing dahlias for a while and they are gorgeous flowers. I do prefer the British pronunciation of DAY-lee-uh over the US pronunciation of DAH-lee-uh when using it as name though.

For boys, I narrowed it down to Dean and Dominic, both of which are good names but neither are really my normal style. I think I’ll pick Dominic in the end though?

I like Daphne, Deirdre, and Daisy , but my favorite D name for a girl is Drusilla, hands down.

Having a much harder time with boy names in this category. David and Daniel are probably closest to my preferred style, but maybe a bit too biblical, plus, I have family members with both names, so they have associations for me. I have a soft spot for the name Dustin, nicknamed Dusty, because of a sweet jock I knew in high school, but it’s such an outlier stylewise, I don’t know if I’d be able to commit to it. I feel okay about Declan, Deacon, and Duncan – like, if I had to pick any of them, I would probably warm to them on an actual child, but they don’t thrill, either. Dominic gets a little closer, but I think Devin, given how similar sounding it is to Evan, a name I once loved, is the winner.

    Drusilla and Devin

Our last name starts with a D so I purposely avoided D names as alliteration usually ends up feeling a little too cutesy for me. That said, if I absolutely had to choose a D name I’d choose Donovan for a boy. It’s a bit overly Irish for my taste being as neither my husband nor I are the tiniest bit Irish, but I like the sound of it a lot and the rhythm is nice with our last name.
For a girl I like Daisy. I worry it might be too sweet and cute on an adult, but then again, there are adult Kaylees and Mileys and Bonnies and Susies, etc. living their lives just fine so I figure Daisy is okay!

My D choice for a boy is easy: Daniel. It’s just a solid, friendly name that works on many different types of boys/men. I also like David and Dean and Dominic, but Daniel (despite its commonness) gives me that little extra zing.

I’m finding it harder to pick a girl’s name — I feel like the Ds aren’t really in fashion right now! Looking at a list, I’m surprised and a bit enamored to see Delight. It’s probably too “out there” for me in real life…but then again, we use plenty of synonymous words as names, like Joy and Felicity and Blythe, so why not Delight? IRL, though, I think I’d go with the classical and beautiful Diana (though I’m not nuts about the Princess Di associations).

So, final answers, Daniel and Diana.

Two of my brothers are named Duncan and Daniel, which I think are Very Good Names, but I’m not in the business of naming children after my brothers. I also like Dean, I like David, I like Declan although it feels a bit trendy to me. I like Dexter but not the pop culture serial killer reference. My favorite boy name, which I tried and failed to name one of my own kids, is Dominic.

Girls I love Daphna or Daphne (I think I prefer Daphna), I met a little girl named Doreen recently and that was DELIGHTFUL I GASPED but I’m not ready to be that daring, and anyway D contains my one of my TRUE FAVORITE NAMES, which is Diana. I would LEAP at the chance to name a baby Diana. It is A PERFECT NAME in my opinion. I sometimes feel SAD that I will never have a little girl because I can never name that girl DIANA. In addition to being (in my opinion) a phonetically BEAUTIFUL name with a good, strong moon-goddess meaning, I’m fond of but not saturated by Princess Di and Wonder Woman, the only two pop culture Dianas I can really think of, and I have a cousin Diane of whom I’m QUITE fond.

When I named my son, the only “d” name left on my list for a boy was Delano as a possible middle because I wouldn’t use the most common/popular ones that I find pleasant (Daniel, Dominic called Nico, Dean, Declan) and the ones that I REALLY like either have negative associations that turned me off (Dorian, Damian/Damien, Dexter) or seemed like too much (Dartagnan, Darius and the Polish form Dariusz, Demetrius, Dionysus). There are also the names that I like on other people’s children: David, Desmond, Dale, Deke, Drake, Dwight, Duncan, Dana. If I could ignore my misgivings, I would really like to choose Dorian because I love all the sounds and it could serve as an honor name for my honorary aunt Doris. If I couldn’t ignore the misgivings, I think I would go with either Donovan called Van or Dunstan called Stan.

For a girl, I know the “d” name that I would most want to choose would be Djuna, but it feels like cheating as a “d” name because the sound is really just “j.” I am ready for Doris to be brought back, but for me, it would be problematic to use as an honor name as is because of an ex with the surname Dorris, and changing it to Dora seems to horrify most people because of Dora the Explorer. Should it turn me off too for that reason? So if I had a chance to honor my Aunt Doris in a girl’s name, I might choose to put it in the middle instead, maybe Dorinda or a name like Theodora or Cleodora that ends in -dora. The “d” names for girls that I like on other people’s children are Dana, Dominique, Dominica, Delaney, Daisy, Damaris, Diana, Donna, Dina, Drucilla called Dru, and Daniela called Dani or Dania. The names that I would be most likely to actually choose that have the “d” sound are Demetria/Demetriana, Dunia, Delphine sometimes called Delly, and Delphina sometimes called Delly or Della.

I’m finding D to be one of the hardest so far! I am feel neutral or lean towards disliking most of the boy names, and the girl names don’t seem to be catching my eye either. Somebody above mentioned Dover, and that is quite nice!

For girls I think Diana is a great name but has never felt like one I could use for my daughter. I think Devin and Dylan are cute “original” gender neutral names.

For boys I find the newly popular Dash cute, but none of the classics are my taste.

Let’s go with: Dodger for a boy and Dorothy for a girl.

For a boy, Dustin or Daniel. For a girl, Diana or Delaney, but I have an actual Della and I love her name. Highly recommend.

A GP of mine is Dulcinea, nicknamed Dulcie. It’s so lyrical and yes, dulcet!

For boys I’ve always been fond of Desmond. It’s my sister in law’s maiden name and if I had been in charge of naming her four boys, one of them would have definitely gotten that honor name.

This one is hard…so many great D names!

I’d go with Daphne and Dean although Darby and Davis would be strong contenders.

girls: Deborah (I know, a very grandma name), Dorothea, Dorothy
Honorable mention:Dianna used to be a favorite, after the old goddess, but well, it got too associated with a certain princess,

    boys: Darius, Dmitry, Drake
lol, apparently the D boys’ names I like are wildly out of my usual preferences

I’d probably go with Dorothea and Drake. It occurs to me that the -rothe- would sound a lot like Rosie to my ear. (I had trouble telling the difference between TH and S until I was 11 or 12.) That’d be an unexpected nickname for a name where I don’t care for most of the traditional nicknames.

I like Delia and Dahlia/Dalia but the pronunciation issues bug me. (I’d say DEEL-ee-uh and DOLL-ee-uh, but also I hate the nickname Dolly.) I also have strong associations with the Delia’s (or was it dELiA*s) catalog…anyone else??

I like Dina because it works with both sides of my heritage (Jewish and Italian), but I have strong association that probably rules it out.

Davina or Davida, Devora, Daphne, and Delphine are all nice. Diana is classic and beautifu.

I Dexter, Dorian, and Desmond a lot. Also Dov. Dean, Delano, and Dmitri are cool. I like Dallas but it’s not my style at all. I’ve always like Damien/Damian but people always seem to have the demon association.

I’m going with Diana and Dexter.

    D: Diana, Dexter
    E: Everett (Ever), Estelle (Esti).
    F: Francesca (Frankie), Felipe
    G: Gwen, Gael
    H: Hazel, Harriet
    I: Ivy, Ilan
    J: Julia, Julian
    K: Katrina, Kade
    M: Mirah, Matteo
    N: Nadia, Nathaniel
    O: Ocean
    P: Patrick, Pearl
    Q: Quill, Quiara
    R: Ramona, Raphael, River
    S: Simone, Sylvan, Sage
    T: Talia, Theodore (Theo)
    U: Uma, Uriah
    V: Vanessa, Vaughn
    W: Wednesday, Wade
    X: Xiomara, Xavier
    Y: Yvonne, Yonatan, Yael
    Z: Zora, Zayn
