Our Favorite Baby Names Starting with F

Here is the game we are playing:

We are going to pretend that we are naming a baby and that the name MUST start with a certain letter, and so we will need one name starting with that letter for a boy and one name starting with that letter for a girl, or else one name that would work for either, EVEN IF we don’t like any of the names that start with that letter enough to Actually In Real Life choose them. It is just a game where we place artificial restrictions on reality in order to create the kind of tension that makes games fun—like when you have to choose what foods you’d eat if you could only eat three foods for the rest of your life: the fun is in thinking it over AS IF it were a real forced decision, while KNOWING it is not. There is a baby! It MUST be given a name with a particular letter! That is the game.

After that basic concept, we can decide our own sub-rules, based on what makes the game fun and not stressful. Some examples:

• I’m not planning to play that the name has to fit with the names of my other children or with the surname, though this would be an option for anyone who would LIKE to play it that way; I think I will have more fun if I pretend it is a stand-alone baby and that the surname is not an issue, though I may change my mind as we go. (And if I narrow it down to a few options and can’t decide, I might use siblings/surname as a tie-breaker.)

• It is also fine to narrow it down to a few finalists without getting to The One Name.

• The boy name and girl name don’t have to work TOGETHER: we are only naming ONE baby, so you’d only use one or the other. But you MAY play that the names have to work together, if that’s more fun.

• It is fine to wave aside issues such as a friend who already used that name, a famous person with the name, etc., if that makes it more fun and less stressful to choose. This is just pretend, so you can pretend that those things aren’t issues if you want to. (Or you can let the issues stand as they are in real life, if THAT is more fun.)

• We can also all make our own decisions about whether the names have to be ones we think we’d ACTUALLY USE in that hypothetical scenario, or just our FAVORITE names starting with that letter, regardless of whether we think the names are practical; I am not sure which way I will play it, and I likely won’t be consistent.

• If you already have a child with a name starting with the letter we’re working on, you get to pick again from all the names that remain; you don’t have to choose your child’s name as your favorite just because it WAS your favorite: this is a FRESH baby, and you wouldn’t give it the same name as your existing child. (If you would normally prefer not to repeat an initial within a sibling group, you can just pretend that’s NOT a preference for the sake of the game.)

• You can do as much or as little explanation as you like in your comment: you can just list the names you chose, or you can explain your process/preferences/reasoning/runners-up, or whatever is most fun.

Today’s letter is F. Names already on my list for girls: Felicity, Fiona, Fern. I also like Flora, Florence, Frances, Francesca. I choose Fiona.

Names already on my list for boys: Frederick, Franklin. I am reading a bunch of Pride & Prejudice-related books, so Fitzwilliam is suddenly on my radar. I know from various comments sections that we have fans of the nickname Fritz, which is not too far from Fitz; and the name William is very popular right now; so are any of us ready to consider Fitzwilliam? I am not quite, though would support someone else choosing it. I am choosing Frederick. No, Franklin. No, Frederick. I can’t narrow it down any further: I like them both too much.

Now you! If you want to! Only if it’s fun and not stressful! Feel free to adjust the game-play to be fun and not stressful!

We named our daughter Frances,-goes by Frankie-so that is obviously my fav. For us, it hit a sweet spot of being a classic name, but it is not super trendy. I grew up with a more unique name and I appreciate not being in a sea of the same name. She was premature and very small and Frankie felt like a spunky fighter to us.

For boys, Felix was on our list.

I love France/Frankie’s name SO much. It fits her perfectly and is so cute while also being classic. It is one of my favorite Internet baby’s names.

I actually chose an F name for one of my children, but I’m playing this with only picking new names, so I’m going with Fern for a girl and Finn for a boy. Apparently in this game I like short trim names in the F category!

    F: Fern and Finn
    G: Genevieve and Gideon
    H: Hannah and Heath
    I: Iris and Isaac
    J: June and Jude

We used Frances as a middle for my youngest and I sometimes wish it was up front, with the nickname Frankie. Love all the Frans – Francesca, Francine. My great aunt is Florence so I considered Flora for an honour. Fiona is so lovely. But I’d choose Fleur! Always wondered how it’d do IRL, then I overheard the name on a little girl in the doctors office and I literally swooned.

So many adored F names for boys – Felix, Flynn, Fox, Fraser, Franklin. I’d use any in a heartbeat. Finn / Finnegan was a longtime fave but it’s so darn popular right now. I know more than a few, and more than a few girl Finleys (it seems to be a sister name for Harper in my area.) I know an adorable Fletcher. I’m choosing Farley, for Mr Mowat.

    B: Farley

Frankie for a girl but wouldn’t use it because I don’t care for any of the full names for it.

Nothing really comes to mind for a boy. Maybe Fletcher? Flynn? Fox? F just isn’t my letter for names apparently!

Hmm. F seems hard to me.

Girls: Flora, Freya, Fiona, Frances. I’d go with Fiona.
Boys: Frederick, Francis, Finn, Finley, Flynn, Felix. I think Finley, called Finn.

I saw this post pop up on twitter and instantly thought “Fiona!” before I even clicked. So I guess that’s the winner! I know a 4yo Felicity and love that name, too. Honorable mention goes to Faith, which I like but can’t decide if I’d name a real child that. Probably?

Boys were harder for me. I had to go look at a list. I like Finley (a friend has a 5yo with this name and he’s adorable) and one I did not expect at all, Fletcher. Not my usual style but kind of works for me anyway.

For a possible neutral name, Flannery jumped off the list at me.

How funny that you mention Fitzwilliam! I AM ready to consider it! Like you said, William is very popular. It’s a “known” name (mean, people know it is a name, not just a random word). And Fitz is such a cute nickname! It’s definitely my pick!

For a girl, I’m going with Felicity. I’ve loved it ever since the original American Girl series came out! It’s such a happy name. :) As a pre-teen I used to dream about changing my name to Felicity, so it definitely passes the “would I want this name” test.

I don’t really love any of the F names, but have some I like enough.
For girls I would use Fiorenza, as a middle name, I fell in love with Italy and met my boyfriend there, while de were both on vacation and we lived like 15 minutes from each other back home. As a first name I like Fabiana
For boys I like Frederick and Francisco, leaning more to Frederick.

My son’s middle name is Frank and I still have the odd wobble about whether I should have gone with it as his first – it was my grandad’s name and I love it.

So in this hypothetical world, I’m going with baby Frank.

For a girl…. I think Flora? Frank and Flora.

Felicity is the name of my oldest daughter, so I obviously love it! I can’t imagine a better name for her!
If we were going to name another girl with an F, I’m pretty sure I would go with Fiona. It was on my original list with Felicity, but it was the name of a family member’s dog at the time and that just felt weird. But in this game, that dog isn’t an issue!
Boys’ names are harder for me. I love Frederick, but I don’t love any of the nicknames for it. I like Felix, but it’s so close to Felicity that I’ve never really considered it. I guess I’ll go with Frederick.

    Fiona and Frederick!

My niece is Francesca and we are in love with her name. We call her Cesca sometimes and her long name allows for silly nicknames like Francutesca, Fransmartsca, and some are situational nicknames. If my sister sends me a pic of her in a cute dress she is Frandressca. If she is playing chess, Franchessca. 😝

    TLDR: Flora, Francis

I love a lot of the F names that have been mentioned already– Fiona, Felicity, and Freya are all big favorites of mine, but the name I like best for an F named girl is Flora. It is so simple and pretty. I know it is still a little stuffy, old person name, but it seems so nice.

I was considering coming with just the name Frances, which is my choice for a boy, as a unisex name, but I wanted to choose two names. I love the name Frances for a boy, so sweet and kind.

    Oh, I like F names!
For girls, I’ve narrowed it down to Fiona and Freya. But, I recently started to think about Florence. I have a 94 y/o neighbor with this name and it feels like it’s time for a resurgence.

For boys, I’ve narrowed it to Felix and Finley. I named our new puppy Fergus last year and I LOVE it. (Since there are no more babies in our future, I now use names for pets.)

Today I would go with Freya and Felix.

F! Yay! I’m here for it. I didn’t realize how much I loved F names until we named our son Fitzpatrick. (Funny with all the chatter about Fitzwilliam! As a side note, most people who meet him as Fitz assume his name is Fitzgerald because we live in the birthplace of F. Scott Fitzgerald – so there are lots of landmarks named after him.) I love Fitzpatrick more and more and more as time passes (my son is almost 3). He goes by Fitz or Fitzy mostly – but introduces himself as Fitzpatrick and it is the sweetest thing coming from a tiny toddler.

I also love Frank, Franklin, Francis, Finn, Flynn

So.. obviously Fitzpatrick for my boy’s choice.

As for girls.. I love so many: Flora, Faye, Fern, Felicity and I have a nice named Frida. I’m having a hard time picking between Faye and Fern. I think I like the sound of Faye better, but Fern from Charlotte’s Web wins me over, so Fern it is.

If I ever have a girl.. are Fitz and Fern acceptable as siblings? Heart eyes.

We went from a letter (G) that had heaps of names I like but none I would necessarily use to a letter that has few names that appeal but two that were very much on my list. Go figure how this name thing works!

    Frances
    Felix

This is an unusual case where I am just as enamoured with the male & female versions of the names so I also like

    Francis
    Felicity

I would like to order twins please of the same sex so that I can use one version of each name without having to endlessly fret over which one I prefer (If I had two boys it would be Francis and Felix, two girls Frances and Felicity but one of each gives me the sword of damocles – Frances and Felix or Felicity and Francis.

I have a boy with Francis as his middle – he is a rare boy named after the matriarchal line, mother’s grandmother.

Boys, so many. Finn is great, albeit popular. LOVE Fitz alone, but would consider Fitzpatrick and Fitzgerald with Fitz as a nn. Fletcher, Franklin nn Frank. Surprised nobody has mentioned Ford which I think is darling. How are we feeling about Floyd? Is it read for a comeback? It jumped out to me, too.

I love Flannery for a girl. Honorable runner ups are Felicity, Francesca, and Fern.

I am torn for a boy. I have always loved Finn, but it’s a little too popular. My third daughter would have been Finnian; the baby was almost Finbar. I love Frederick in full but not so much Freddie/Fred; I like Frank but not so much Franklin/Francis. I do like Felix. I know a Fergus and the name is surprisingly wearable.

I have loved the name Frederick for a while now, and it only occurred to me reading this very post that it’s probably because of Captain Frederick Wentworth from Austen’s Persuasion. Well. It wouldn’t fly in real life because of a relative on my husband’s side, but it’s perfect for my imaginary new baby.

Frances is one of those names I like in theory but can’t picture on my own child. I have a soft spot for virtue names, so I like Faith and Felicity, but both have strong associations with famous people/characters for me, as does Florence. But Flora … lovely, and with the possibility of the nickname Flo, which should probably be coming back around from Great Aunt status to perfect for a baby status right about now.

For girls, I absolutely adore the name Ferris (my daughter’s second middle name, it almost was her first), but due to the movie connection it feels unusuable. I also love Frances, Felicity, Faye, Freya and Faith, though none fit with my usual name style. I do rather like the nickname Frankie for Frances though, and Freya feels very Norse to me which I love.

For boys, I adore Finley and Finnian but both feel too trendy, particularly the nickname Finn, which I love. Frederick and Felix also get honorable mentions, but they don’t really fit with my usual style. I like Freddie but not Fred for Frederick, and Felix seems really cute.

That was the name of my Greek great-grandmother. It comes from the same root as the word “photo,” referencing light. My great-grandmother went by a diminutive form, which my grandmother (her daughter-in-law, not Greek) always pronounced something like Fanyi. When Fotini/Fanyi emigrated to the U.S. sometime before WWI, people called her Fanny, and when her own daughter followed the Greek tradition of naming her first-born daughter after her mother, she called her Frances instead.

I think a lot of F names seem more whimsical than realistic, in my humble opinion (Fable, Fern, Freya) or old fashioned (Francis, Frank)

For boys, Ford and Finn are cute, but I don’t love them either. Since the game is we have to choose an F name, I suppose I’d go with:

I adore F names! If I had a son he would be Frederick. I also love Frances/Frankie for a girl, or Florence, or Felicity, or Fiona.

It’s strange — I had some names starting with “f” on my list for my son, and I’ve never had any names starting with “f” on a girl name list. Still, I think I can find several choices for a girl that I could be happy with, and I’m not sure that I could for a boy.

The boy names that I like on other people’s kids that I probably wouldn’t choose include Floyd, Franklin, Forest, Ford, Flint, Flynn, and Finnegan. I also like Fitz, but I wouldn’t know what to choose for a long form. Fitzroy has a cool sound, but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t want the meaning of my child’s name to be the illegitimate son of a king.

The names that were on my list for my son were all long forms for Finn like Fintan, Finnian, and Finlo/Finnlo. I was really into Finnlo for a while, but it was vetoed, and I’m not sorry because of its similarity to all of the Finley variations. So maybe Finnian or Fergus called Gus.

The girl names that I like on other people’s kids that I probably wouldn’t choose include Faith, Fabiana, Fabiola, Frederica called Freda/Frida, Fiammetta, Fiorella, Farah/Farrah, Fiona, Francesca, Francine, Florencia, and Faye. But I think I could happily choose from among Flora/Floriana (though I couldn’t use Flossie for a nickname as it’s my mother’s cat’s name), Felicity, Fionnuala (not with a Finn-named brother, of course), Freya, and Ferelith. Freya might win, but maybe not upon meeting the child.

For a boy, Finnegan (nn Finn) with Fritz as a runners-up.

For a girl, I chose my daughter’s actual name – Faye. I also really love Frances (nn Frannie or Francie).

    Frida and Ferris, definitely!
I also like the Finn names for boys, especially Finnegan and Finbar, but Finn is too popular where I live.

    Fern and Francis.

Honourable mentions to Fiadh (FEE-a) for a girl and Ferdia fir a boy. Fiadh is number 2 in Ireland at the moment, having shot from nowhere in the past decade!

I love Francis for a boy, yet for some reason am not enamored of Frances for a girl, even though they are LITERALLY THE SAME NAME. Taste is a strange thing! I also mildly like Frederick, but probably not enough to actually use — which is too bad, as it’s my godfather’s name! Oh well, perhaps for a middle. For a girl, I’d go with Felicity, which I think is beautiful (and also it’s the name of my favorite American Girl doll!). So, final answers, Francis and Felicity.

I like Fiona (my niece’s name), Felicity, Fallon, Fern, and Felicia (but “bye Felicia” makes it unusable in my opinion). I’m going with Francesca, which has been one of my faves forever. Frankie as a sometimes nickname.

I like Florian as a boys’ name with kind of a feminine/gender neutral feel. But the only Florian I’ve come across is on a reality show which makes me feel kind of meh about it. I also love Felix, but someone pointed out that it sounds like “feel licks” and now I can’t un-hear that (sorry everyone). For the purposes of this game I’m picking Felipe, which I love but probably wouldn’t actually use since I don’t have any Latinx or Spanish heritage.

    F: Francesca, Felipe
    G: Gwen, Gael
    H: Hazel, Harriet
    I: Ivy, Ilan
    J: Julia, Julian
    K: Katrina, Kade
    M: Mirah, Matteo
    N: Nadia, Nathaniel
    O: Ocean
    P: Patrick, Pearl
    Q: Quill, Quiara
    R: Ramona, Raphael, River
    S: Simone, Sylvan, Sage
    T: Talia, Theodore
    U: Uma, Uriah
    V: Vanessa, Vaughn
    W: Wednesday, Wade
    X: Xiomara, Xavier
    Y: Yvonne, Yonatan, Yael
    Z: Zora, Zayn
