Swistle,
HELP! We are pregnant with surprise baby #3 (definitely our last). We always wait until the birth to find out the gender of our babes and this one will be no different. We have two girls, Emmalynn Kaye (age 5) and Luella Jo (age 1.5). We want to find a name that we LOVE LOVE LOVE just like we did with our girls. Unfortunately, nothing is giving me those feelings thus far. Neither of the girls names are nod to family members, just names that we heard somewhere along the way and decided fit into our family. We tend to go toward classic / unique names as you’ll see by the lists below. Here are the lists my husband and I have come up with – names we like, but don’t LOVE…at least not yet:
Boys
Smith
Clark
Reid
Harrison (likely a middle name candidate vs. a first name candidate)Girls
Hallen
ColettePlease help us find some names we love for this baby due in late April / early May.
Thanks,
KARA
From the boy-name list, I like Clark Rogers and Harrison Rogers (if it is in the running as a first name). Reid Rogers wasn’t originally one of my favorites but is growing on me considerably as I work on the post; I think it’s only that I don’t personally tend to lean toward alliteration (though with time I find myself leaning more), and also it makes me think (not in a negative way) of Roy Rogers. Something about Smith Rogers is not quite right to my ear when I say it—not at a level where I’d cross it off the list, just at a level where I prefer other candidates.
More names that seem to me to be similar/adjacent to those on your list:
Cary Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Cary
Dean Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Dean
Everett Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Everett
Grant Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Grant
Hank Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Hank
Heath Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Heath
Lee Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Lee
Merritt Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Merritt
Nash Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Nash
Nolan Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Nolan
Perry Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Perry
Russell Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Russell
Vance Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Vance
Wade Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Wade
Warren Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Warren
I am a little inclined, just for fun, toward the ones that give you another set of double letters: Everett, Lee, Merritt, Perry, Russell, Warren. Lee may be too close to Luella, Everett may be too close to Emmalynn, but I left them on the list in part because (1) “too close” is subjective, and (2) the double letters.
For a girl, I’d be inclined toward another compound name: Emma + Lynn, Lu + Ella, and now _____ + _____, though I kept running into combinations that were too close (Annabel, where -bel seems too similar to -ella; Evalina, where the E_al_n_ seems too similar to Emmalynn), so I’ve included non-compound names as well. Some possibilities:
Adelaide Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Adelaide
Angelica Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Angelica
Annalise Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Annalise
Bernadette Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Bernadette
Bonnie Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Bonnie
Clarissa Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Clarissa
Coralie Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Coralie
Daisy Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Daisy
Delilah Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Delilah
Gemma Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Gemma
Georgia Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Georgia
Hazel Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Hazel
Joanna Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Joanna
Juliette Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Juliette
Marianna Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Marianna
Pearl Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Pearl
Rosalie Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Rosalie
Rosemary Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Rosemary
Ruby Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Ruby
Sally Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Sally
Shirley Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Shirley
Susannah Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Susannah
Suzette Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Suzette
Violetta Rogers; Emmalynn, Luella, and Violetta
Some of those might cross the line into TOO alliterative. Georgia, for example: is Georgia Rogers too much R and G? or JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT? Ginger Rogers carried it off, and she had the -er/-er thing as well.
Oooh! I know an Emmalynn, she has a brother named Beckett, which feels like it could fit your “classic but different” criteria.
LOVE Merritt and Warren!
Rosemary and Clarissa are my favorite girls with the older siblings names.
I have to say that I love your girls names!
For girls I like Anneliese, Coraline and Labelle
For boys I like the suggestion of Beckett, Everett and Reid, from your list.
SO many great contenders. For girls, I am particularly smitten with Adelaide! Annalise! Bernadette! Or what about Loralei?
ALL of the options for boys are fantastic. Clark is my top choice, though I love Merritt and Dean as well.
Congratulations!
I like Hallen, by wonder if Hallena would be a better fit with your family, so each girl would have their own ending?
Is the girl name Hallen like Allen with an H? Or like Van Halen?
Emmalynn, Luella and Annabeth (Anna-beth)
Emmalynn, Luella and Aribeth (RPG name for full disclosure)
Emmalynn, Luella and Babette (Babs!)
For boys, Beckett, Everett, Bennett, Barrett, Abbott, Griffin are all good choices for keeping on with those double letters.
I went to school with a girl named Sarabeth! Very cute and maybe their style.
Your naming style is similar to ours, so may I suggest, our boy’s name, which fills me with joy: Griffin, nn Griff. It gives you the double letter bonus, and I think Griff Rogers is so snappy and a little old fashioned sounding in the best way!
Ooooh, I love the idea of another classic girl name that is a compound name. I LOVE Annalise in this sibset! I also wondered if you would like Georgianna?
For a boy, I’m loving the suggestions of Dean, Hank, Wade, Nolan and Grant. I could also see Grady, Callahan, Callum, Calvin, Burke, Wyatt, Declan, Garrett, Tobin or Seth. I like Everett but prefer not to repeat initials within a sibset. And I love Merritt but prefer it on a girl.
For another girl, love Bonnie, Sally, Susannah, Joanna and Daisy. A few additional suggestions:
Twila
Jolene
Hollis
Helen
Annabel
Juliet
Betty
Yvette
Yvonne
Nadine
Maisie
Gwendolyn
Marjorie
Phoebe
Ramona
Rosalie
Sybil
Winnie
What about Annabeth? that catches the double letter
I love Annalise, and would also like to recommend Scarlett, both for it’s similarity to Collette and because I think it fits well with the sibling names.
For a boy, how about Wesley? It’s a hearty and familiar name (without being overly common), and it will wear well. I can imagine Wes, a sweet little boy, or Wesley Harrison Rogers, a distinguished older gentleman.
For a girl, perhaps Celia Jean? Celia Jean Rogers. Celia Rogers. A name that sounds somehow both sweet and serious and continues the double-name pattern.
Also loving Collette! But personally I might remove Hallen from the list. I think people will hear either “Allen” or “Helen,” and it will require explanation every time.
Merrigan? Madigan? Maribel?
I have a Clark, so I am biased,
Colleen
Helena (heh-LAY-na)
Evelyn
Elowyn
Since your girls names have a classic vibe with a bit of a fun twist, and your boy list has some unexpected surnames, here are a few more recommendations:
Girls:
Isabeau
Rosabelle
Coralie
Boys:
Banks
Drummond
Gentry
I suggest Coretta for a girl. Double letter, three syllables, captures a Colette vibe. With Kaye and Jo as middles, it seems like you’d like a short middle so you can elaborate on your child’s name for fun (or fury). Since you have a strong A and O sound so far, I’d go for a strong E or U/Oo sound-like Lee or Lou, Bea or Rue.
Coretta Bea and Coretta Lou are my favorites
Oop except for the Lu of Luella! Too close maybe! So, Coretta Bea :)
I feel like a Sue_ or _Mae smoosh name would be good with this set. Or maybe an Anne or Rose name?
Rosalie
Rosamae
Sueanne
Or maybe a 50s name like Peggy or Patty?
Peggy May
Patricia Anne
Emmalynn, Luella, and
– Olivette Pearl
– Marietta Mae
For boys, I love so many of Swistle’s suggestions. I’d toss out Gilbert as an option too. Cliff. I’m kinda digging a name in a smutty book I’m reading right now…Jethro.
– Hank Gilbert
– Jethro Reid
– Cliff Harrison
Girls:
Henrietta
Violet
Maeve
Colette
Genevieve
Clementine
Boys:
Beckett
Sullivan (nickname Sully)
Marshall
Gabriel
Henry
I think your daughters’ names have a great, sort of southern/vintage vibe. These names might pair well with Emmalynn and Luella:
Abilene — I love this name! Abilene Rae, possibly nn Abbie (or another variant). : )
Coralee — I really like Oralee, but it sounds too much like “orally.” : (
Hadley
Maybelle
Melanie,
Opal
Phoebe
Willowdean — lots of spelling variants: Willowdene, Willowdeen, Willodean, Willodene, Willodeen, and then there are the variants of Willadean . . .
For boys I like:
Abner or Abram — with Abe as a nickname
Dillon or Dylan
Emmett — if only it weren’t too close to Emmalynn
Felix
Mitchell
Silas
Theo — as a standalone name or as a nickname for Theodore, Theon, or Theophilus
Coralee and Annalee have the same “misheard” problems even though they’d work so well. Did you see the new Hanson baby was named Maybelene (sp?)- that has the rockabilly southern vibe and sounds so fun- nn Maybe!
Amelia- Millie
Johanna- Hannah
Josephine- Josie
Naomi
Delilah
Jolene
Charlene
Sadie Mae
Boys: Warren!, Marshall, Dean or Freddie
For a boy, Scott!!
For a girl:
Julianna Mae
Marietta Leigh
Coralie Ann
Meredith Rose
Eliana Rose
Maribel Hope
Ariana Leigh
Rosalie Ann
Juliette Rose
I love Swistle’s suggestions of Coralie, Rosalie and Susanna(h). They fit in so well with Emmalynn and Luella without being too similar. Coralie and Rosalie share an L with your girls but have a different ending. Susanna(h) does have the same ending as Luella but shares double N wit Emmalynn. Of these, Rosalie is the most popular, # 208 on the SSA list and rising.
Bettina!!
