Baby Girl or Boy Johnson, Sibling to Juliet

I’m really in need of some outside advice here. I’m due in August, but due to IUGR complications, could be having the baby any time now. We are team green (as we were with number one), but completely stumped on a girl name and it is beyond stressing me out!!

My name is Katelyn, my husband is Justin, and our daughter is Juliet Marie. Our last name is Johnson. We did not choose a J name on purpose and I want to avoid it this time around. I don’t want to be the only non-J (silly, I know)!

The boy name we have picked out, if the baby is a boy, is Gavin Arthur. It was on our list the first time around (along with Lucas Alexander), but it seems to have won out as top contender.

Juliet seemed like such an easy choice at the time, and now we absolutely LOVE it. Romantic and girly. Widely recognizable, but not popular on the charts. Easily pronounced. An uncommon, masculine nickname (We call her Jet). Both Jet and Gavin have kind of a badass, rockstar, vibe (Joan Jett and Gavin Rossdale), but also a literary connection.

We have considered Caroline- it was on my list the first time, but my husband isn’t into it. There don’t seem to be any great nickname options here. It just doesn’t feel right anymore.

Vivian- nickname V, We don’t have a middle that works and we’re both kind of meh here.

Ariana- nickname Ari. I’m liking this name, but it does seem like a bit of a mouthful.

Evelyn- nickname EV. This one my husband keeps coming back to. If I’m being honest, I don’t love the repeat of “lyn” from my name.

Is it too much to ask to find a romantic name with a badass vibe? I’m at a complete loss.

Please Help!
Katelyn

I am interested in this “romantic with a badass vibe” concept. Here’s what makes it happen for the name Juliet:

1. The Romeo and Juliet connection, of course, which persists in feeling romantic even though it’s tragic.

2. The nice sharp T-sound at the end: Julia wouldn’t have the same badass quality.

3. The cool nickname Jet.

4. The alliteration with the surname. Juliet Johnson is snappier than, say, Juliet Miller.

Of the names on your list, I think Vivian comes closest to romantic/badass. There’s the Scarlett O’Hara / Vivien Leigh connection, which gives it a flashing eyes / sassy talk feel as well as a beautiful dress / romantic lead feel. Plus the V-sound has sass of its own. Nicknames V, Vee, Viv—all pretty good. I have two hesitations: one, that you’re not really feeling it; two, that if you’re planning more children it might rule out using Gavin later (it wouldn’t HAVE to, but you might think it has too many sounds in common).

Ariana doesn’t seem like too much of a mouthful to me, and it’s got the romantic feeling—but I’m not seeing any badass/rockstar.

Evelyn is a great name, but it doesn’t strike me as particularly romantic OR badass.

Caroline—maybe. It’s got a princess feeling to it, which covers romance. I’m not sure about the badass. I think it hinges on the nickname. Something like Caro, Rory, Ro?

Let’s look at some more possibilities.

Genevieve. This was a top contender for my daughter’s name. It’s got the romantic quality, plus the nice sharp V-sounds to keep it from being too sweet. It alliterates with the surname without actually using another J name. Nicknames include Vee and Evie and G and GJ. Genevieve Johnson; Juliet and Genevieve; Jet and Evie.

Claudia. Romantic, but you can definitely picture her in a roller derby. I’m watching The West Wing so I’m drawn to the nickname CJ, or I like the nickname Claude. Claudia Johnson; Juliet and Claudia; Jet and CJ.

Winifred. Do not mess around with a Winifred. She will crochet you a sling for your arm after she breaks it. Excellent nickname possibilities: Fred, Freddie, Winnie if she’s not the Fred/Freddie type. Winifred Johnson; Juliet and Winifred; Jet and Freddie.

Georgia. A Georgia will bless your heart as she leaves you in a cloud of motorcycle exhaust. G, George, Georgie. Georgia Johnson; Juliet and Georgia; Jet and Georgie.

Beatrix. Literary as heck. Cool X-sound. I’m not your girl for coming up with non-traditional nicknames, but OKAY FINE WHAT ABOUT BEX? (I believe I first heard this nickname idea from my friend Miss Grace.) Beatrix Johnson; Juliet and Beatrix; Jet and Bex.

Maxine. I’m not sure what name has more sass than Maxine. Maybe Roxy? Plus, you get the nickname Max. Maxine Johnson; Juliet and Maxine; Jet and Max. My one hesitation: insufficient romance.

Francesca, with Frank and Frankie to work with. Francesca Johnson; Juliet and Francesca; Jet and Frankie.

Eloise. One of my enduring favorites. So literary! And princessy! But in a going-to-be-queen way, not in a fragile way. I am not sure what you would like to do about a nickname. E? Lo? Maybe Lou? Eloise Johnson; Juliet and Eloise; Jet and Lou.

Eliza. Another enduring favorite. Again the nickname needs work. Eliza Johnson; Juliet and Eliza; Jet and…?

Alice. Literary. Alice Johnson; Juliet and Alice; Jet and Al.

Josephine. I know you said you don’t want another J. And I wouldn’t either, if I were you; that doesn’t seem silly to me. I’m mentioning Josephine anyway. Literary. Romantic. And most importantly: THE NICKNAME JO. Josephine Johnson; Juliet and Josephine; Jet and Jo.

Annika. Annika Johnson; Juliet and Annika; Jet and Nico.

Veronica. Another roller-derby name for me. Nicknames Ronnie, Nick. Veronica Johnson; Juliet and Veronica; Jet and Nick.

Rosemary. Nicknames Ro, Rory, Romy, Rosie. Rosemary Johnson; Juliet and Rosemary; Jet and Romy.

Katherine. Katherine Johnson; Juliet and Katherine; Jet and Kit.

Name update:

I really loved all the suggestions from you and all the readers. We realized that we were reaching too far for a “princess” name. When we thought of a sibling set, it wasn’t classic and romantic that we were going for. So when our daughter was born on 8/12, we decided on Aria Elizabeth (Ari for short). Everything may think we named her for game of thrones, but little do they know that her nickname is all Ari Gold from Entourage, and that’s pretty badass.

I love the juxtaposition of Romantic and Badass. I’m particularly drawn to Maxine, Georgia and Beatrix.

What about also Patricia? (Pat/Patti as in Patti Smith? )

    Violet? (Vi, Vio, Vivi)

Katrina? (Kat, Trini, goes with your K for Katelyn)

    Alexandra? (Alex, Al)

However, what about Winslet! Jet and Winnie! Or—– STELLA!!

For what it’s worth, there is a 3yr old Winifred in my circle of mom friends, nicknamed Fred and my mom LOVES her name!

    Other suggestions:
    Hollyn
    Emilyn
Charlotte (I know this is popular nowadays)

I love so many of Swistle’s suggestions. Frankie is probably the badass name that comes to mind most for people (and I do love love love the name!), but I actually like that Jet is more unexpected, so I think you should dig deeper. I was actually thinking Josephine nn Poe, that would be badass. Or Bix or Bay for Beatrix (love Beatrix so much, just watch Kill Bill and the name will forever be badass.) Katherine nn Kit is so great too. I have a Georgia who perfectly fits that description (OMG I was laughing so hard) but I don’t think you want to repeat sounds? I also loved Juliet but couldn’t do it (my inlaws and brother in law are all J-sounds too.) @Sarjo’s Imogen nn Moe is so cool!

    Can I suggest:
Penelope nn Poe (for some reason I’m really digging Jet and Poe for you) or PJ (like PJ Harvey, use a J-middle maybe? or maybe it’s enough with the J-surname)
    Alexia nn Lux
    Marguerite nn Reese
    Estella nn Telly
    Felicity nn Flip
    India nn Indy
    Bellamy nn Bay

And if the only thing holding you back from the super classy Caroline is a badass nickname, Appellation Mountain has a daughter who is called Cleo for Caroline! Jet and Cleo. Yes.

From your list I really like Arianna nn Ari, if you feel it’s too long you could just use Arianne instead.

A few others, Odette nn Odie, Alba nn Al or Albie, Aurora nn Rory, Athena nn Thea, Amity, Krista nn Kit, Victoria nn Tori, Elodie nn Elle, Scarlett nn Scout, Estelle, Edith nn Edie, Florance nn Flora, Felicity Flick, Marina.

Beatrix was absolutely the first name I thought of when I read your letter, but I thought the nickname Trix or Trixie might appeal.
What about Bernadette with a nickname Birdie?
I would also suggest Naomi (a common nickname is Nommie (pronounced No-me), and Frances nn Frankie.
I particularly like Imogen from the comments.

    I have five thoughts:
    1) if you don’t like Beatrix but you do like Bex, then you could see how you feel about Rebecca;
    2) or instead of Vivian, there’s Viviana which I think sounds even more romantic;
    3) I like Penelope nn Poppy, but I do realize that’s not a masculine nickname;
    4) you could also channel a popular TV show and Lorelei/Lorelai nn Rory;
    5) my daughter’s name is Alexa and she goes by Lexi, but also a lot of the time people call her Lex. So maybe Alexa/Alexandra/Alexis might work to get you to Lex if you like that.

Nancy Drew’s two best friends are Georgia – called exclusively George – and Elizabeth – called exclusively Bess. Jet and George, or Jet and Bess, would be great! Literary, romantic first names, and then spunkier nicknames! (I know that Bess can sound soft, but with Jet it just makes me think of things like bass guitars and the first part of the word “best.” It has a COOL, rocker feeling to it, in the same way that Jet does despite being spelled differently than Joan Jett.)

Judith, nicknamed Judy or Jude, breaks the J-rule, but has the right badass feeling for me because of the life history/ personality of Judy Garland. Jet and Jude. Ooh, you could also do Elizabeth nicknamed Liza, like Liza Minnelli!

How about Barbra, like Barbra Streisand (now I am just thinking of people who did duets with Judy Garland, oops!), nicknamed Barb? Jet and Barb, like barbed-wire.

I like Miranda all on its own. Juliet and Miranda, Jet and Miranda. Literary and princessy, and still badass, just from the Shakespeare play alone! If you would not be nicknamimg Gavin, then perhaps you would not need to nickname Miranda? Although of course Andi or Randi would give you the added masculine sound.

    Isabella nicknamed Izzy?

Genevieve OR Veronica, but nicknamed Verve? As in, a verve (vigor, enthusiasm) for life? Juliet and Veronica, Juliet and Genevieve. Jet and Verve. The Verve is also a rock band. And, Veronica of Veronica Mars makes that name extra badass (and Kristen Bell, the actress, being tiny and blonde and of course now Princess Anna from Frozen makes it princessy!).

Alice is my favorite from Swistle’s list, either by itself or nicknamed Al. Alice and Juliet, Alice and Jet, Al and Jet. Jet and Al. Can you imagine Lewis Carroll’s Alice, and Shakespeare’s Juliet meeting? I could see them coming to understanding and friendship. They were both rebels. Plus, Alice Cooper was a male rockstar.

I don’t think anyone has mentioned Cecilia yet, and that name has always struck me as romantic with bad-ass potential. My niece is named Cecilia and she uses the nickname Cil (pronounced “Seal”). It’s very cute. Jet and Cil!
If you like Swistle’s suggestion of Eloise but need a nickname, I have an aunt named Eloise who often goes by Elo (pronouced like L.O.)

Also, every Nikki/Nicky I have ever known has been a bad-ass, and I feel you never hear that nickname for little girls anymore. Perhaps it’s too much of a “mom name” right now? But I’d like to hear more of it again! Nicolette or Nicola, nicknamed Nic or Nikki.

Sort of an off the wall suggestion, but I’ve been trying to decide for a long time whether the name Virginia feels remotely usable (important honor name for me, and I actually think it’s sweetly old-fashioned, but I’m not sure if it’s wearable for a kid these days). Anyway, I just heard of someone named Virginia who went by Jinx. Now, I can’t decide if that’s the coolest thing ever or if it’s “jinxing” your kid at birth, but if you can handle having another J (nick)name in the family, don’t mind Virginia’s teasing/unfortunate misspelling/unfortunate mispronunciation possibility, and you don’t think Jinx is a terrible, horrible nickname no one should inflict on a child, Virginia “Jinx” and Juliet “Jet” seems like a good pair to me. (Ginger is my other favorite Virginia nickname.)

    1. Erin Beth

Becky, I love the name Virginia and it is my grandmother’s name so I have thought about this too. For what it’s worth, I am a teacher and I have taught a handful of Virginias over the past ten years. Many of my students actually live in Virginia, so my experience might not translate, but in these parts it is such a mainstream name (people, state, prestigious university) that I can’t imagine it would be particularly tease- worthy. I also sense that name-related teasing is much less common–and even less socially acceptable among kids– than it was when I was growing up.

If the lack of a nickname is the only thing holding you back from Caroline, I agree Caro is a good one. I like Rosemary (Romy), too.

How about initials as a nickname? That could sound cool on a girl. My daughter’s initials are J.D. and I remember thinking we might call her that when I was pregnant with her, though it didn’t end up fitting her.

Hmm, the badass rocker vibe from Juliet/Jet is a bit of a stretch for me. But I guess it’s all subjective.

From your list, I like Vivian. I also like Evelyn, particularly because of the shared “lyn” element. It would link your name to this daughter’s name, just like the J initial links dad’s name to Juliet.

Inspired by Swistle’s comments about Vivian, I really like Scarlet for you. It’s definitely more badass (Johanson/Black Widow) plus spunky/sassy (O’Hara) and romantic (O’Hara again). In fact, it truly as the badass/romantic feeling for me, in a way the other names don’t. It also doesn’t potentially rule out Gavin later. I guess there is Scar as a nickname, or maybe Lettie/Letta?

I also really liked the combination of Jet & Rory as nicknames. In addition to Rosemary, you could also get Rory from Lorelai (a la Gilmore Girls), Aurora, Victoria. I could also see it working for Caroline. Or maybe Lola as a nickname for Eloise?

Kit is another nickname I like with Jet. Katherine, Kristin, Kirsten? Or what about Phillipa/Pip/Pippa? Andrea/Drew/Drea? For some reason, I’m finding it easier to think of spunky/badass nicknames and then work backwards from there.

Here to suggest Violet! Nicknames: Vi, Viv, Lettie.

Or Evangeline. Like Juliet, it has that romantic literary vibe (but it’s also spirited and unusual). I LOVE it with your surname.

Or Roxana. Feels more classic than Roxane, and has the amazing nickname Roxy.

Romilly? Not classic, but so nice.

Cosima, nickname Coco or Zizi? The one Cosima I know goes by Zizi, and it fits. (They pronounce the name KAH-zi-ma, first syllable sounds like cosmic.)

Zizi is such a cool nickname that makes me think of Zinnia, Zelda, or Zora.

    Or Zenobia, nickname Zen?

    Arabella, nickname Bell.

But most important of all: from one high risk pregnant woman to another, GOOD LUCK! If you’re due in August you’re probably out of the woods for the scariest weeks of prematurity, right? (Though I know IUGR is a whole other minefield…) Sending you all my best.

I’m in love with Swistle’s suggestion of Francesca/Frankie, and I’m a big fan of the reader suggestion Lola (which I think sounds romantic and badass without a nickname) and the Scarlett/Scout suggestion–literary in a couple ways, and Scout as a nickname is just the best. In some of these cases, there’s a little bit of a vibe of trying to match the exact formula you hit with Juliet, which feels like a tough proposition. A lot of these are great options, and I think it’s okay if the “badass nickname” has to come about organically!

Also worth noting, Rosaline is Romeo’s original gf in Romeo and Juliet. That might strike you as neat or as weird.

    Ferry: Farrah, Jennifer, Sapphira
Lorry: Lorelei, Chloris, Elora, or anything else with the LOHR sound
    Rocket: Roxana, Roxanne, Raquel
    Ski: Saskia
    Van: Evangeline, Vanessa, Savannah

I mean, i still like Lex, too…but this would be SO cute.

I love Lola, from above! Or Ruby. Really sweet but also really badass to me.

If this isn’t too much Shakespeare, what about Cordelia, nicknamed Corey? Or Ophelia, which kind of gets a rockstar vibe from Dave Grohl.

Well done Swistle, so on point with your suggestions!

I agree that my favourite for you is Vivienne with nn Viv/ ViVi, it’s a pity you don’t love it. Maybe you would like Violet a bit more nn Vi? Or does the repeat of the ‘let’ sound bother you? It wouldn’t bother me but something to consider. What about Olivia nn Liv/Livi?

I also love Frankie but prefer it with the full name of Frances.

I also like Beatrix nn Bex or Trixie
    Or Bellatrix

Here are some more suggestions, sorry if there are repeats.

    How about:
    Stephanie nn Stevie
    Charlotte nn Charli
    Lydia nn Lydi
Florence nn Florrie or Flo or
    Felicity nn Flick
    Alexandra nn Lexi or Alexa
Bianca nn Bee Or Bee Bee
    Natasha nn Tash
    Olivia nn Liv or Livi
    Anastasia nn Star or Starzy
    Aurora nn Rory

    I think my favourite is
    Alexandra nn Lexi
    Jet and Lexi

I also like Bianca as it goes so well with Juliet.
    Juliet and Bianca
    Jet and Bee

    Or Olivia
    Juliet and Olivia
    Jet and Liv/Livi

    Good luck
