Dear Swistle,
We are having the hardest time naming our THIRD BOY! We need help! We have a Rory and a Luca, both inspired by our world travels. Rory came from Ireland and Luca came from Italy. My husband likes the name Trey and I like Penn but both names we don’t love. If it was a girl we would name her Rozlyn no question. But since we found out it’s a boy, and with our due date approaching rather quickly (end of August) we feel pressured to find the perfect name for our baby boy Richardson! We are very overwhelmed and would love any input from you or any of your readers! Thank you!!!
-Tacy
My guess is that you are out of locations to draw inspiration from, or you would have mentioned them. Well, if you DO have another country to draw from, I’d start there. It’s a fun theme. Perhaps a country you PLAN to visit some day?
If not, I’d still be inclined toward international-sounding names. And since both Rory and Luca are names with at least somewhat unisex usage in the United States (Rory more so than Luca), I might also look for other names that were not boy-only, or that had the sound of not being boy-only. This is a very assorted sort of list, but this is the kind of thing I’d be considering:
Beau
Cael/Cale
Callan
Darcy
Drew
Ellis
Emil
Finley
Grey
Ian
Joss
Jules
Julian
Kai
Kellen
Kian
Kieran
Landry
Lane
Lee
Merit
Noel
Quinn
Rhys
Sage
Shea
Teague
Zane
I agree! Something international sounding and potentially unisex. I like Kellen from the list. I also want to add Darby, Arlo, and Micah
Thr first name that came to mind for you was Jett! I LOVE the sibling set of Rory, Luca and Jett!
Other suggestions:
Gage
Conrad
Corbin
Cael
Asher
I did not see that Swistle had suggested Cael when I typed my response!
I like Kellen/Callan, Drew, and Julian. I’m not wild about Trey, but I think Penn sounds really nice.
Other ideas (mainly thinking of “unisex” names and/or shorter two-syllable names that go with Richardson):
Isaac
Kyle
Carson
Wesley
Morgan
Peyton
Ryan
Oh! Also thought of Colby!
Some names with European flair:
Alejandro
Andre
Antonio
Axel
Carlos
Dimitri
Johann
Jules
Marco
Nikos
Oooh, I like Johan. I would have named my son Johan if it weren’t for the fact that my husband’s brother is a Johan. (He would have gotten a swelled head had we done so!)
Noel
Tyler
Jesse
Teagan
Jamie
Jerry/Gerry
Terry
With Rory and Luca, I would consider:
Axel
Duff
Ewan
Guy
Hugo
Ivan
Lars
Sven
Quinn
Miles has come up here before as a name that could have a subtle travel meaning, and I think it fits with the style of Rory and Luca.
Or Atlas, if you want to be bold = ).
Oooh, or Perry/Peregrine. Means wanderer/traveler/pilgrim.
Miles made me think of Milo, which I can totally see as a part of this sibset.
My ideas for international names:
Milo
Percy
Anders
Finley
Ansel
Nico
Leon
Harvey
Alfie
Emil
Oskar
My favorite with Luca and Rory is Nico or Milo!
Coming on here to suggest Nico. I agree, it’s perfect with the sibset. And I like that it keeps the four letter theme, ends with a vowel like the others, but a different beginning letter and sound. And definitely sounds international without being out there.
As soon as I saw Emil on Swistle’s list I really latched on to that one, I LOVE it as part of this sibset! Nico and Miles or Milo are absolutely great too, those are my favourites. A few other ideas:
Jasper
Dane
Sebastian
Adrian
Gabriel
Hugo
Matthias / Matteo
Cyrus
Stefan
Martin
Since you have an Irish-inspired name, coming from Celtic language background, and an Italian-inspired name, coming from a Romance/Latin language background, and you guys speak English, which is a Germanic language, what about a German-inspired name? I am including only two syllable names, to go with Rory and Luca.
Ansel
Axel
Barret
Garin
Hugo
Konrad (or Conrad)
Orlin
Otto
Walden (the Thoreau connection could be a major pro or con… if you’re a outside-loving family, could be great!)
Warner
I think my favorites are:
Ansel. Rory, Luca, and Ansel. LOOOOOVE.
Hugo. Rory, Luca, and Hugo. LOOOOOOOOOVE.
Otto. Rory, Luca, and Otto. It’s definitely out there, but someone take a chance on Otto! LOOOVE.
Vaughn!
Rory, Luca, and Vaughn.
I like Penn. For international/travel slightly unisex names I suggest:
Remy
Nico
Emil
Adrian
Paolo
I also like Leo, Otto and Rhys.
Without knowing your theme, Rory, Luca and Rozalyn makes me think of Wesley, August, Jonas, Zane or Jude.
Knowing your theme, I love Ellis as an “American” name (Ellis Island). Or maybe Austin, Aspen, Hudson or other place names? Or if you like the beach, a water name like Kai?
Is there anywhere you have been dying to travel to but haven’t had the chance yet? Perhaps pick a favorite name from that culture.
I agree that it would be fun to include the third kid in the “international” theme! I’ll add my support for Ivan, Sebastian, and Hugo — and will also suggest Ari and Avi.
I immediately thought Niko or Nico (either spelling). I see others thought of that too. Also like Milo.
Rory, Luca, Niko
Rory, Luca, Milo
I like the different endings.
I don’t notice the travel connection so much. What jumps out at me about Rory & Luca is that they are both short & sweet. Along those lines, I’ll suggest Milo, Myles, Perry, Percy, Jude, Owen, Matteo, Nico, Ian, Trevor, Theo.
I also thought of Ty & Tate which seem similar to your husband’s pick of Trey. Quinn & Finn seem like good possible alternatives inspired by Penn.
Han
Axel
Alaric
Evan
Cade
Alec
And I definitely add my vote for Nico and Milo
Swistle’s suggestion of Darcy is perfect!
Rhys, Shea, and Zane are my favorites with your surname and other sons’ names. Rhys particularly, if you don’t mind repeating the R initial. Rhys R——son is very dashing.
Other possibilities:
Leif
Ivan
Matteo/Mateo
Nico
Jude
Milo
Archer
Laszlo/Lazlo
Grant
Milo is quite nice because it means each boy has a different vowel ending, yet Milo is not identifiably Italian like Luca, hence tying in with Rory.
I instantly thought of these, which it seems everyone else has as well! My favourite are the first three:
Hugo
Otto
Emil
Nico
Milo
I love the idea of keeping the same number of letters per name (if you can find one that you love). Makes them all flow nicely. Especially if this is your last child, then it doesn’t add any added pressure to follow suit with your next. If you are planning on having more, then I’d say now would be a good time to break the 4-letter naming system you have going on.
Good luck!
Henrik
Jerome
Nikolai
Igor
Anders
Stellan
Ari
Carlo
Santiago
Diego
Jonas
Niklas
Stelios
Stefan
Viktor
Mischa
I like Nico but to me it sounds like Luca and Nico are both Italian and leave Rory out on it’s own. Maybe a more German sounding name would work. Mika is nice but has the same ending as Luca. Otto has been thrown out. For some reason I really like Finn which to me sounds more Scandinavian or the good solid English sounding Theo.
Rory, Luca and Finn
Rory, Luca and Theo
Rory, Luca and Otto
Ezra?
Bruno
Micah
Kjell
Arni
Finn
Callum
Oscar
Louis (with French pronunciation)
Or Milo or Niko from above
How about a Scandinavian name, to round out the travels? I lived in Denmark for a while and these were names that I saw while out and about (I’ve left out the ones that just don’t work in English):
Anders
Finn
Ansgar
Asger
Erik
Hans
Henrik
Jens
Johan
Lars
Magnus
Morten
Soren
Stellan
Sven
Torsten
Viggo
