Baby Wagenson, Unexpectedly a Girl

Julie writes:

My husband and I are pregnant with a baby girl due July 23rd. We were told we were pregnant with a boy, and were all set with our name – Neal Conor (last name Wagenson). But about a month and a half ago our doctor informed us that there had been a mistake and we were actually having a girl!

Since then, we have been going crazy with lists, but no name has really stood out to us. I’m worried that we will never find a name and our little girl will either have a name we don’t really like or end up being Neal! Please help!

We have two other children

Nora June (given name Eleanor, but I don’t think we’ve ever called her that)
Tess Charlotte

Here is a selection of our extensive list…. all the names are pretty much the same style, so these are the ones we like most from it.

Olivia/Livvy
Faith
Ella
Margot
Katia
Kira
Eva
Ava
Cora
Madeleine
Hannah
Caroline
Abigail
Kate
Annie
Elissa
Violet
Sophie
Lydia
Grace
Georgia
Molly

The names are all fine, but none stick out to us as THE name. I feel like they’ve all got a similar feel that would fit with Nora and Tess, but they are all so much more popular, and while we don’t want that, we can’t seem to come up with names that aren’t that we like.

We will most likely have another child, and if he is a boy, he will be Neal Conor.

Please help us! We are obviously looking in the wrong place, so hopefully you can set us on track so we can find the right name!

Thanks so much!

I like the idea of each of your daughters having a different amount of syllables in their name to make them more unique. You already have two darling names: Nora (2 syllables) and Tess (1 syllable). So I am naturally drawn to the three syllable names on your list, which are:

    Olivia
    Katia
    Madeleine
    Caroline
    Abigail
    Elissa
    Violet
    Lydia

Of those, my favorites are Caroline, Abigail, Violet and Lydia.

    Other names to consider:

Sophia (three syllables, with the nickname of Sophie that you already like)
    Emmaline (nickname Emma/Emmy)
    Emerson (nn Emmy)
    Susanna (nn Susie/Anna/Annie)
    Mathilda (nickname Mattie/Tilly)

Based off of Nora and Tess (lovely names!) and your list, here’s my list for you:

    Elle
    Isla
    Milly
    Mira
    Polly (Paulina)
    Blair
    Vera
    Rose
    Zoe
    Willa

    Any you like?

You already have a good list, but I would cross off Cora because I wouldn’t want a Nora and a Cora in the same family.

I like the style of names on your list and could come up with a few others, but the one idea I have that really stands out to me is:

Sylvie – it is like combining Olivia/Livvy and Sophie from your list and getting the same name! That way you get two names for the price of one so to speak.

All of your names are comfortable, feminine, and sweet.
It is nice that your daughters both have a different vowel sound (‘Oh’ and ‘Eh’) and different first initial (‘N’ and ‘T’).

Have you considered the name ‘Mae’ to fit with her sisters?
It isn’t on the top 100 list and is a classic, familiar name.

That would leave you son to have his own vowel sound (helpful when calling for a specific kiddo).

    Nora, Tess, Mae, Neal.

All the best to your family!

When reading I went “Lydia, Lydia would be perfect!”, then saw you had it on your list and weren’t thrilled with it. Boo. My vote is still for Lydia and think it would make a terrific little sister for Nora and Tess.

    Other names I like:
    Gretchen
    Eliza
Anna (simple, classic and far underused in my opinion)
    Harriet nn Hattie

Hattie would be my second choice after Lydia. Good luck!

I really like Kate with Nora and Tess.

    Nora, Tess, and Kate.

Kate is kinda hard to pair with most middle names, so you could name her Katherine and call her Kate.

    Katherine Ann
    Katherine Faith
    Katherine Grace

Then if you have your Neal all your children will have 4 letter names.

    Good luck!

Some great names on your list and in the comments. I love Kate, Liv, Anne (nn Annie?)…I love the one-syllable names as a sibling set.

I agree with Christa in that I like that all of your children will have four letter names or nicknames. With that in mind, I suggest:

    – Joan. (not in top 1000) Nora, Tess, Joan, and Neil. This seems to fit the timeless and classical trend that you have.
    – Jane. (#390) Nora, Tess, Jane, and Neil. So pretty. You also don’t have a hard A sound yet in your group.
    – Gwen. (not in top 1000) Nora, Tess, Gwen, and Neil.

    From above, I like Ruth.

I love most of your choices (minus Cora, Lydia, Georgia, and Kira), especially Kate and Molly.

I have to say that my adult friends horror at the possible teasing of “Chlamydia Lydia” ruined the name for me.

    Good luck!

I have a Nora and love the name Tess, when we were due with baby #2 Ruth(ie) and Penelope were on the top of our list. Sorry, I didn’t read the other responses, but I think Cora and Nora are a little too close.
