I’m due in 9 weeks with boy/girl twins. We came up with our daughter’s name fairly easily – Lucia (pronounced Lou-c-uh) and we’ll call her Lucy for short) but cannot decide on a boys name to save our life! We have narrowed it down to the following 4. His middle name will be Robert (family name) and our last name is Woods. I’ll include some of my thoughts on each name. We like names that aren’t too poplar but not too out there either. Would love to hear your input and reader suggestions. Thanks!
Silas
We both like this name but whenever we share it with people we get “oh, well I like your girl’s name”. Is it just not very likeable? While we don’t care too much what others think we don’t want his sister to have a ‘good name’ and he has a bad name! We’d call him Sy for short. One issue I see is that since our name also ends in an S is that too hard in the plural – Silas’ Woods’ ?
Layton
Concerns with this name is that it is also a girl’s name, even though it would be spelled different Leighton Meister is the popular actress. I also don’t like how you lose the t when saying it fast – Lay’n and no good nicknames. I do like both Layton and Lucia starting with an L.
Bennett
I like this more than my husband. I know it’s rising in popularity. Would be concerned it automatically becomes Ben which is common.
Preston
My husband likes more than I do. It’s also a little to close to the 100 list for my taste. No good nicknames but I do like it sounds professional.
So
Silas & Lucia Woods?
Layton & Lucia Woods?
Bennett & Lucia Woods?
Preston & Lucia Woods?THANKS!
I DO like Silas, but if you’re concerned about the double S endings, perhaps Simon? Simon Woods is so nice, and you still get Sy.
I agree with the problems with the name Layton you mention. Maybe Lachlan instead? Or Lawson? Or Lennon? Or Lennox? Or Lincoln? Or Linus? Or Lyle? I particularly like Lincoln’s nickname Linc: Linc and Lucy.
So my suggestions are:
Simon Robert Woods
Lincoln Robert Woods
And from your list my two favorites are:
Silas Robert Woods
Bennett Robert Woods
Name update 08-11-2010! Andrea writes:
hello! Just wanted to give a quick update our twins were born August 4th and we named them Silas Robert and Lucia Gail – they fit perfectly! Thanks to you and your readers.
I like Silas and the Ss don’t bother me. I think it’s my favorite on your list. Simon’s a good alternative, though, if they bother you.
My favorite L names for boys are Louis and Logan, if you want to go in that direction.
Also, for some reason Malcolm popped into my head as a good sibling name for Lucia.
I am the mother of a 4 year old Bennett Robert, and I cannot tell you how much I love his name! No one calls him “Ben”, it is always “Bennett”. People really seem to love the name (and we have only met 2 others who live nowhere near us) and he is very proud of his unique name. I think it sounds really nice with Lucia (Lucy is one of my favorite girl names).
That said, one of my daughters’ teachers just named her baby boy Silas, and I think it is really nice too. Sy is a great nickname and Silas is a strong name, but not too old for a baby or too young for an adult male. I think Silas Woods is easy to say and spell (two important criteria for us).
Good luck!
Love the suggestions of Simon, Louis and Malcolm. Malcolm and Lucia sound fantastic together.
I don’t think you want to use Linus with Lucy – they are both Peanuts characters!
I like Silas the best with Lucia.
Bennet is my fav name from your list though. He would def. get the nn Ben.
Here are some names that I like with Lucia.
Nicolas, Gabriel, Ezra
I love the name Silas! Sy is a fantastic nickname, and I don’t think that a first and last name ending in S would be difficult. Bennett is another great name – those are my two favorites.
Of Swistle’s suggestions, I do like Lincoln and Lyle. They go very well with your last name and are strong names. I also like StephLove’s suggestion of Malcolm. Good choices!
Law and Lucy! That sounds great.
One is very masculine, the other very feminine. Lawson Woods is an excellent name.
Tobias is similar to Silas, and if you don’t like ‘Toby’, there’s always ‘Tobes’. Edison and Isaiah are also similar.
Dyson is close to Layton, but it will NEVER be a girl’s name.
Best wishes on your double blessing!
I like Silas. :) And I like the sound of “Lucia and Silas” together. I’d call them both “good names”. :)
Not a fan of Silas. Maybe Landon?
I think Louis and Lucy may be too similar. I think Landon might sound like “Land and woods.”
I love Bennett! The initials work, the sound works, the sibling set works. Just great. I don’t understand the concern about the nn of Ben. Lucia and Bennett. Lucy and Ben. You never know if your kids are going to end up using their nickname or not.
My second favorite would be Liam. Lucy and Liam. How freaking cute is that?!?!
Instead of Preston, how about Prescott with the nn of Scott? Seems to have that same nice resume feel with a handy nickname.
I like the name Silas, but I’m not such a fan of the double SS’s. I keep saying it over and over and I can’t tell if I like it or if I’m dropping the S on Woods. Hmm.
I like the name Silas a lot, but to me it blends too much with Lucia. Especailly when you nick name it down to Lucy and Sy.
Bennett and Preston are probably my faves. Porter might be a lower popularity alternative to Preston.
