Baby Girl, Sister to Kaiden

(My mother-in-law is in town this week, but the babies don’t wait and the questions are coming in faster than I can answer them, so I’ll post some for anyone interested to work on.)

Melissa writes:

My Husband and I are having our second, a baby girl, due October 4th. I just thought we would write and get some more opinions on the names we have chosen. This little girl will join her big brother Kaiden.

Finalists are:

Brinley
Avery
Harper
Ava
Isabelle
Piper
Ainsley

We have decided to go with either Grace or Delight as a middle name. both of which are the middle names of my great grandmothers. I have the middle name of my great grandmother also. Our son has the middle name of his great grandfather who passed away before he was born.

The two we like most are Avery and Brinley. I was voting for Avery Grace for a few months and now the last few days I really like the sound of Brinley Delight. Its something you don’t hear everyday but not to weird. I don’t want it to be too weird.

I like Harper but my husband doesn’t. I am pretty sure Piper is rated pretty low on our list..

I guess at this point we are just indecisive:).. Any opinions would be great thanks!

Poll over to the right! [Poll closed; see results below.]

Poll results (205 votes total):
Brinley: 41 votes, exactly 20%
Avery: 61 votes, roughly 30%
Harper: 40 votes, roughly 20%
Ava: 15 votes, roughly 7%
Isabelle: 14 votes, roughly 7%
Piper: 23 votes, roughly 11%
Ainsley: 11 votes, roughly 5%

I just voted for Avery, but now that I think about it, I think Avery and Kaiden both have that long a sound. Every time you call one name or the other they sound similar enough that both may say “what?”
I think Brinley Delight is unique and pretty

I think Delight is a wonderful, fun name. That said, though, it … gives many of your first name choices (Brinley, Ava, Isabelle, Piper, and Ainsley in particular) a bit of a stripper sound. Don’t hate me! I just think someone should bring it up.

I like all the name options paired with Grace. I particularly love the name Avery for a girl. I really like Brinley too.

I like Brinley and Piper the best, and since you don’t seem to love Piper, then Brinley.

Personally I like Brinley Grace better than Brinley Delight, but they’re both nice.

I have to agree with Melio. While Delight *is* an old family name for you, it doesn’t seem to compliment your name choices in the way I think you want. I think stripper or some sort of cocktail drink. Sorry!

I’m with Cara and Melio. One of my favorite teachers used to say that you have to name your children names that would allow them to be President of the country if they wanted to be – I don’t think Brinley Delight would cut it. I think she’d have a hard time being taken seriously. On the other hand I LOVE Avery Grace.

    Good luck!

I think Delight is nice, in theory. I definitely hear “stage name” though. I LOVE Brinley, and Brinley Grace is lovely. With such an uncommon first name, something sweet and simple as the middle name just sounds great.

I love Ainsley Grace… but since you’re pretty much down to Avery or Brinley I’ll vote between them…

Personally, I like Brinley Grace best like others above. I know Delight is a family name, but I’m not sure it sounds right with “this day in age” connotations.

Like other commenters, I’d go with Grace as a middle name regardless of which first name you pick from your list.

    I’d go with Avery Delight.

Delight is one of those eye-poppingly strange choices that you CAN use because it is found on your family tree. Plus, Avery is a fairly common choice, so they pair together well.

I’m not wild about Brinley, but if you did use it, I’d pair it with Grace – Brinley Delight feels too unusual together, but Grace lends some classic balance to Brinley.

Or there’s always Avery Grace Delight or Avery Delight Grace …

    Congrats on baby #2!

I like Brinley the best, and Brinley Grace the best too, but I am not as opposed to Delight as a middle as some. I guess I would use it with a more traditional first name though, Like Ava Delight or Isabelle Delight, Brinley Delight is a bit much. And it looks to be oddly like Sunny Delight (or at least feels like something I heard before…)

I was going to suggest the same thing as Abby@AppMtn. Why not use both middle names? Though I do think you could use Delight on it’s own, I also understand the other comments about it’s “stripper” feel. I personally love the idea of two middle names, and many people reserve the second spot for a family name. Avery Grace Delight is absolutely lovely and I feel eliminates the suggestive connotations altogether.

So I vote for that. Avery Grace Delight.

I’m glad that people have pointed out the negatives to using Delight as the middle name. I have to say, it really screams stripper to me – and it also really screams food item (Turkish delight, Sunny Delight, etc.). And I don’t even think that the fact of it being a family name makes it a viable option; people who hear the name aren’t going to know it’s a family name, but they will likely pick up on the who stripper/food thing.

I’m sorry to shoot the name down like this! Mrrraahhhh, don’t hate me!

Curious if we’ll ever get an update on this one. She must have gone with Delight and feared our wrath.

Wha ha ha. Just kidding. We wouldn’t be mad! But we’d like an update, Mama :)
