Baby Boy Beal

Claudia writes:

My husband and I are expecting our first baby, a boy, in July and although we found a lot of girls names that we liked, we found it very hard to find any boy’s names. We both really like Konrad as a middle name. Konrad is a German name meaning “brave and honest advisor” and we were surprised to find that it is a longer version of Kurt (his name).

As for first names, here are the top 5 choices so far:

  • Abraham – Hebrew, “father of multitudes”. Nicknames could be Abie, Bram or Hammy.
  • Henry – English or German, “estate ruler”. Nickname could be Hank.
  • Lawrence – English or Latin, “from the place of laurel trees” also Home of the Kansas Jayhawks! (where I went to school) Nicknames could be Lawry or Lars.
  • Leonard – German, “brave lion”. Nicknames could be Leo, Leno or Lenny.
  • Truman – English, “loyal one”. No nicknames.

_____ Konrad Beal?????

Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks for your help on this.

I’m with everyone else – Lawrence is greatly underused (only 427 in popularity for 2008). I like Leonard second (621 but Leonardo is 170). I also like the idea of just using Lars (not in top 1000)! Good job, everyone. :)

I voted for Abraham… I’m loving that name lately and Abe/Abie is such a great nickname.

I don’t know if you’re looking for more suggestions, but one that came to mind (triggered obviously by Truman) is one of my new favorites and I so wish I was having another boy to use it…

    Truett -English, “little, honest”

I think Truett is a very cool name.

Out of your five options, I like Lawrence too, or just Lars Konrad Beal. Henry would be my second choice.

    Other name suggestions:

    Adam
    Zachariah or Zachary (nn Zach)
    Isaiah
    Caleb
    Nathaniel or Nathan (nn Nate)

Thank you everyone for your comments. I too went to the U. of Kansas which is why Lawrence was an option in the first place. Although people thought I was crazy to have Truman as an option (that’s the name of Missouri’s mascot).

I love the middle name Konrad. It works with everything. There are a lot of Lawrences in my family, A LOT. And we considered it for a minute for baby 2, but couldn’t come up with a nickname that wasn’t Larry. That killed it for us.

I love all of your choices! We have a 9-year-old Henry and boy #2 was going to be Charles Truman, and furthermore, my friends call me Lars! How’s that? LOL

Lawrence is a great name, even without the school connection. I say go for it!

Ironic that you like the name Truman, given that you went to KU and over in Missouri at MU their mascot is Truman the Tiger. : )

Maybe now you’ll have second thoughts, haha.

I really like Henry, but that name sticks out as being much more common then the other choices. Lawrence I could get behind if I didn’t already know the most obnoxious person in the world with that name… so I vote Henry.
