Baby Boy Northcutt

Meredith writes:

My husband and I absolutely do not agree on names and we are so strongly opposed to the names the other suggests, that it is nearly impossible to find names we both like. He tends to like the more traditional names, while I like the contemporary ones. One requirement is that I really want it to “go” with our first son’s name, Reid. Our last name is Northcutt, so I kind of like the one-syllable first name, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be 1 syllable. Possible middle names: Ryan or Matthew, depending on the first name (however, we’re not sold on those middle names either).

*My top name choices are Ryder, Chase or Jax (husband doesn’t like any of these, so these are out)
*His top name choices are Nicholas, Carson, or Christopher (I nixed all 3)
*The only name that we’ve semi-agreed on is Luke.

We both just love our first son’s name, Reid Michael, and I really want us to love our next one’s name as well!

Thanks so much for your ideas and help!!!!

The Baby Name Wizard suggests Grant as a brother name for Reid, and I think that’s a good suggestion. Grant Matthew Northcutt. Reid and Grant.

Or perhaps Jude? Jude Northcutt. Reid and Jude.

Wade Northcutt. Reid and Wade.

Gage Northcutt. Reid and Gage.

Joel Northcutt. Reid and Joel.

Todd Northcutt. Reid and Todd.

Beau Northcutt. Reid and Beau.

Clark Northcutt. Reid and Clark.

Dane Northcutt. Reid and Dane.

I stuck with 1-syllable choices because I liked them too, but when the rest of you make suggestions, 1-syllable isn’t a requirement. Oh, and I just thought of a 2-syllable choice I like: Adam Northcutt. Reid and Adam.

Name update! Jace Ryan

Great suggestions, everyone! My faves so far are Jude and Grant.

When I read the scenario aloud to my husband he said, “Go with Luke. The Internet cannot help you.” But I think the previous commenters have made some great suggestions.

    How about…?
    Spencer Northcutt. Reid and Spencer
    Troy Northcutt. Reid and Troy
    Eli Northcutt. Reid and Eli
    Tate Northcutt. Reid and Tate
    Royce Northcutt. Reid and Royce

Hm. Nymbler keeps giving me Rex and Lance but I can’t see dad going for either.

You haven’t mentioned nicknames. Maybe a traditional name with a cool nickname would satisfy both parents? perhaps
    Andrew/Drew
    Jason/Jayce
any J-name and JR, e.g., John Ryan or James Ryan
    Leo
    Max

    How about Mark?

Mark Ryan Northcutt. Reid & Mark

    Or Basil?

Basil Matthew Northcutt. Reid & Basil

    Or Zane?

Zane Matthew Northcutt. Reid & Zane

I think Luke is good, too and it’s hard to agree and you both like it it might be the way to go. Good luck deciding!

I like Grant, Beau and was going to suggest Tate and see someone else beat me to it. What I like about Tate is that it is similar to Nate, which is more traditional in line with the father’s tastes, but swapping the N with a T gives it a crisper more modern sound which appeals to the mother.

And building on the traditional name / cool nickname idea I like Chaz as a nickname for either Chandler or Charles. I consider Chandler a more off-beat name that still has a classic feel sort of like Reid and it may work on it’s own. But I really like the idea of a 1 syllable name with your last name and paired with Reid.

I would avoid Jude (even though I really like the name) because I have a tendency to switch the first letters when I’m saying those names together, which would come out Jeed and Rude. For some reason, I don’t slip on the other combinations.

    Miles or Garrett?

I also like the compromise of a semi-traditional name with a snazzy nn, if that helps bridge the two naming styles.

I like Luke Matthew and think it goes great with Reid Michael. I also like Swistle’s suggestion of Grant. Here are some other names I like with Reid, some have been mentioned already, some have not.
    Kyle
    Seth
    Shane (one of my faves!)
    Owen
    Cole
    Evan
    Brett
I think all of these sound good with Matthew and/or Ryan as a mn.
BTW, I have nephew named Ryder and he is a wonderful kid! So, I love that one! Good luck!

Love the suggestions of Cole, Finn, and Tate. Another idea is Gabriel, called Gabe for short. I think these names sound cool and fresh, but also have a classic side as well.

If you like Luke why not try Lucas. Lucas Matthew sounds like a great name and you could always call him Luke for short. My brothers name is Lucas and it’s not too common but definitely stands out.

    Good Luck!

Oh my goodness!!! Thank you for all the great suggestions!!! I can’t wait for my husband to get home this evening to show him all the new names! There are some on here that I’ve thought of, and some new ones. One of my good friends just had a baby and named him Grant, so unfortunately that’s out, and what’s funny about Adam is that is my husband’s middle name so it has a good family tie!! I’ll get back with some final name choices!! Thanks again and keep the suggestions coming!!!
