Baby Boy Morales

Courtney writes:

We are due in early March with our second baby boy and we need help picking a name.

Our two-year-old’s name is Caden James Morales.

There are several names that I really like–and my husband seems to have no strong opinions this time around.

I like Asher, Corbin, Cael, Zane, and Lucas. I am afraid that Lucas seems too traditional after a more contemporary name like Caden–and I am afraid that using another “C” name of Corbin or Cael will lock me into “C” names if we decide to have a third baby. Zane is the only name my husband isn’t really thrilled with, even though I love it. My concern with Asher and Cael is their Hebrew and Gaelic roots…is that strange with our last name?

Any thoughts, suggestions?

My favorite is Lucas. I think I’d go with Lucas Zane Morales, so you can use that name you love that your husband doesn’t like. Caden James Morales and Lucas Zane Morales. Yes!

Let’s see what everyone else thinks with a poll over to the right. [Poll closed; see below.]

Poll results (264 votes total):
Asher: 82 votes, roughly 31%
Corbin: 32 votes, roughly 12%
Cael: 14 votes, roughly 5%
Lucas: 136 votes, roughly 52%

Name update 03-26-2009! Courtney writes:

Just wanted to say thanks for all of your help and your readers help for baby names! Our son, Zane Rylan was born on March 4th, 2009. He was 7lbs 4oz and 20 inches long. My husband finally saw the light and now loves the name Zane…and Rylan was a reader’s suggestion that we fell in love with. Thanks again!

I don’t think Lucas is too traditional to go with Caden. Something like Edmund or Ernest would be strange with Caden, but I like Lucas and Caden together! The hard C sounds go together, but since they are not both at the beginning, you are not locked into C names for any future children.

You know, I had to look back at the last name and at first (only at first) thought it might be a bit off with your last name. But then I thought, don’t limit yourself because Morales doesn’t “match up” with Asher or Cael. Go with what you love. I think either would be fine.

I also think Lucas is fine with Caden.

I would be the one to worry with the double C names locking you in. I have 5 kids with all names ending in “N” and didn’t really plan to until #4. Then felt locked for the last 2. Not like a first letter, but still I feel that C thing, unless you are going for a much larger family then 2 Cs not bad. I’m an initial mom myself, all kids got their own letter…

Oh goodness, really? Everyone is agreeing and I don’t like that suggestion at all! Lucas sounds good with Caden, but I see a host of other problems with that choice. Lucas Morales comes across as sing-song-y with the double sibilant “s” endings — am I the only one who dislikes that? Plus it is challenging to enunciate (and woe be to poor Lucas if he has a lisp). I also think Zane as a middle name is an issue — if you try to say “Caden James” and “Lucas Zane” in a row, it sounds like the two boys have the same middle name!

I think Swistle is so cool everyone just wanted to agree with her! :-) Her suggestions typically get support, mine included.
On this one though, I’m going to agree with anonymous above, I don’t like two names ending in “s.” I think it looks fine on paper but it sounds really funny when said out loud.

Um, or maybe it could be that people have different opinions on things like names and what sounds good? Lucas Morales was one of the mom’s suggestions so obviously she doesn’t agree about the name endings.

    DEFINATELY ASHER!!!!!
I don’t think the Hebrew meaning makes any difference! I think Asher and Caden go excellently together and Asher is on mine (and my sister’s hehe) name list but both of us are far far away from a babe!

Lucas is a traditional name, but also very trendy right now. I think it would pair nicely with Caden.

My favorite of the choices is Asher…it seems very modern despite being a biblical name.

If you like the sound of Asher but the origins bother you, how about Archer?

I like the idea of Zane as a middle name and love the harmony of Lucas Zane, but think the anonymous poster who says Caden James and Lucas Zane sound too similar when said together brings up a good point.

Are you looking for some other options? Here are some sibling names from The Baby Name Bible:

    Caden brothers:
    Bryson
    Rylan

I eliminated Jaden, Camden and Colby because I feel they are too similar.

    Asher brothers:
    Rider

Eliminated Judah, Ari, Gideon, and Lincoln because they don’t seem to be your style.

    Zane brothers:
    Bryce
    Trey
    Gage
    Griffin
    Ty

We hit the mother load! I think all of Zane’s “brothers” would fit your style. Now you just have to run them by the hubs. It seems to me that you and your husband simply haven’t come across a name you both love yet. Good luck.

Asher was one of the sons of Jacob. Some other names you might like from the other tribes:

    Levi, Reuben, Israel, Benjamin.

Levi is especially cool, having biblical roots, but also sounding fresh and modern. Jacob had other sons of course, but the others are a bit more ‘out there’. Another suggestion that comes to mind is Caeleb. And here’s some variations on Lucas, meaning ‘light’:

    Lucius, Orin, Lucian
