Quick Poll: Annabel

What is your favorite variation of the girl name Annabel? Poll over to the right. [Poll closed; see below.]

(P.S. You may be wondering how I choose which variation to use in the question itself, and if this means that’s the variation that’s MY favorite. What I’m doing is choosing the one the Oxford Dictionary of First Names lists as the first version of the name.)

Yay! One of my favortie names!!
I named my daughter Annabelle. I like being able to use the nickname “Belle” and I don’t think that would have worked if I had gone with Annabel. Also, Anabelle (or any one “n” variation) seems like it would be pronounced “AHnabelle”.

So Swistle, what do you think of the name? :)

Meredith, I’m not sure if I should read “AHnabelle” with a short a or a short o. I first read it “ON-uh-bell,” since the syllable “ah” is usually pronounced as short o (as in ox). But then wondered if “AHn” would rhyme with “Dan.”

I think of all the annabels as having the “Ann” part rhyme with “Dan.”

Great name, and fun to have the poll!

I voted for Annabelle, because that seems the way most people would expect it to be spelled. It also makes the ending a definite “bell.” If spelled “Anabel,” I wonder if some people might pronounce it as if it rhymed with “Hannibal.” Probably not, but the “belle” makes it absolutely clear.

Meredith- I LOVE the name, and it’s on my girl-name shortlist. My favorite spelling is Annabel, but I agree with you that Annabelle is best for the nickname Belle/Bella.

Late to the party but I have to add! For fan’s of name origin and name meaning, Annabelle means graceful beauty (it comes from the French Anna + Belle), whereas Annabel means loveable (comes from the Celtic Amabel).

I am (obviously) Annabel spelt Annabel and, as you have to spell it all the time, I like that its only 7 letters, not 9. I also just really like it, it’s what looks right to me. (Probably because it’s my name, ha.)
