Hello, we are due to have our 3rd child and second girl Christmas eve. We have always had a harder time picking names both my husband and I could agree on. We have Allison Adelaide and our Son is Lucas Calvin who we call Allie and Luke. For our new baby girl we have narrowed the options to Phoebe and Amelia. Amelia is my husbands favorite it is also a family name from my grandmother, I like it also, but I feel like I lean toward Phoebe, which isn’t a family name just one we both happened to like. I would be happy to name the baby Phoebe Amelia. Hitting both the names. Amelia is tricky for me because I don’t like Milly AT ALL, and the middle name can’t be an S because our Last name is an S name and I am not thrilled about those initials! I wanted to use a “Christmas” middle name but my husband vetoed Noelle which was my favorite, and all the A, names are out…So Middle names for Amelia are running low!
Any advice would be welcomed…
Thanks!
OMG, am I BEHIND much? Your baby could easily be here already. But we will plow ahead anyway in the hopes that she is not yet here and there is still time to be of use.
Phoebe Amelia is a terrific name. I like the way it introduces a new first initial, too. We’ll leave it alone and turn our attention to the problem of if you want to use Amelia as the first name.
One nickname I’ve heard for Amelia is Mia. You could also do Amy or Ammy (kind of like Emmy) or Lia.
Middle names, hm. It’s too bad he’s vetoed Noelle, because I love the sound of Amelia Noelle. How about Eve, since she’s due Christmas Eve? Amelia Eve. Or Amelia Holly or Amelia Ivy (from The Holly and the Ivy). Amelia Merry. Amelia Carol. Amelia Christmas. Okay, I am reaching here. My favorite is Amelia Eve: it commemorates her due date whether she’s born before or after or on, and it’s a pretty middle name.
Let’s put it to the vote in a poll over to the right [poll closed; see below]: Phoebe Amelia, or Amelia ___. If you have a favorite middle name idea, you can put it in the comment section.
Poll results (193 votes total):
Phoebe Amelia: 76 votes, roughly 39%
Amelia ___ : 117 votes, roughly 61%

We had our baby December 23rd,2008, healthy and well! We named her Phoebe Amelia, she was dark haired and in my mind Phoebe was dark haired and Amelia light, so to us nothing else fit her…Thanks for all the advice, I loved many of the names, Especially Eve but my husband is Adam which we thought was just kinda funny sounding…
Thank you all again, and A Happy New year to you all!
Am I missing something? Why not Amelia Phoebe?
There’s always Natalie, which I’ve always associated with Christmas. Amelia Natalie is pretty if it works with your last name.
I like Amelia Eve best too. Mary Amelia is pretty and Christmasy too.
Natalie actually means, “born at Christmas”. Amelia Natalie…kind of long, but it doesn’t sound bad.
Amelia Eve is beautiful. A friend named her daughter Amelia and they call her Emme. It’s pretty and definitely better than Milly!!
I think Allie, Luke, and Mia is adorable.
At the nameberry.com blog, they recently had a huge list of Christmassy names.
Amelia Eve is very pretty. Is Amelia Chantal a possible option?
My friends has an Amelia, she calls her Emmie. Ame (Ah-me) is cute too, but I think Amelia is just fine the way it is.
I guess I don’t think Phoebe flows quite as well with Allison and Lucas, but I do like the name Phoebe as well. I don’t think you can go wrong.
some friends of ours have an Amelia Avery and call her Meeli…
I think Amelia Eve is pretty, and also like Amelia Holly…
for some reason I also like the sound of Amelia Isabelle – which doesn’t really have any Christmas ties, I just like it… good luck to you!!
and Merry Christmas!
One of my cousins was born on 12/27 and her middle name is Noel. I love it.
If Noelle is totally vetoed, then I like Amelia Eve with the nickname of Mia.
My daughter is Camelia and we call her Mel quite often, so there’s that nickname too for Amelia. My first thought was the season, and going with Amelia Winter. I know two girls (a high schooler and a baby) with the first name Winter. This works even if she isn’t born on Christmas Eve as well. All that being said, I’m voting for Phoebe Amelia because it is beautiful. Not that they aren’t all great choices.
Amelia Eve
Amelia Joy
nicknames -Ame (ah me)
Emme
Mia
Mel
I like the idea of being named after someone.
Merry Christmas
I love Giselle’s suggestion of Amelia Natalie, though Noelle would have been so beautiful. I also agree that Mia would fit right in with Allie and Luke.
I would definitely go with Amelia Eve “Mia” – so beautiful!
I love Amelia Eve! And I think Amelia gives you good nickname choices – Mia, Ame, Amy, Emmy, Lia.
I voted for Phoebe Amelia. I like how Phoebe is one of those old-fashioned names that still seems modern. The only downside is that your older kids have nicknames, and Phoebe doesn’t have any as far as I know. Unless you want to go by Pheebs (Feebs). I’m not a fan of that, and I don’t consider it a “real” nickname with historic usage like your other kids, but more of an organic nickname such as Jenster for Jennifer. But maybe you might like it.
If you choose Amelia as a first name, then I think Amelia Phoebe would be a natural choice. And Amelia has more nickname options as we already discussed. It might be fun to use a festive middle name but if I were you, to lesson the confusion and stress, I would simply decide between Phoebe and Amelia and then use the other for the middle spot. That way you both use both of the names you like, and risk running into regret later on.
I meant to say, “risk less running into regret later on.”
I vote for Amelia ____ because I feel Amelia fits in a little nicer with your other children’s names. I like Mia, Mel or Lia (Leee-ahh) for nicknames. Allie, Luke and Lia is really pretty, I think.
I also agree you could just use Phoebe as the middle name, and then both names get used. “Amelia Phoebe” sounds great! I also like “Amelia Eve” and “Amelia Natalie”.
Merry Christmas, and all the best with the new baby!
I vote for Amelia Eve. I like all the nicknames Swistle suggested.
Another idea is to spell Amelia with an “E”, as in Emilia. Then the nickname “Emmie” would flow a bit better.
Amelia is beautiful as a first name, but I just really love Phoebe Amelia. I think Allison/Allie and Amelia are a bit too close in sound, and Phoebe is just a grogeous name.
Best of luck, and happy holidays!
Oh shoot, I meant “gorgeous”, above.
I love Amelia Eve….
Just wanted to chime in on the “nickname for Phoebe” thing – my niece is Phoebe and frequently gets called “Bee” – which is kinda cute.
To Anonymous, I love The Bee nickname, So cute! Thanks for sharing!
