I like the name. It reminds me of the Adam’s family. Second I heard that they will call her by her middle name not her first name. This is a very common trend. If this is so Rose is not uncommon but very few people have the name. I like it if they do end up call her by her middle name.

I sort of DON’T hate it! It is a little Adams Family, like the previous commenter said, but it’s growing on me, actually. I think the middle name Rose helps.

Hmmm … it’s uncoventional, but it has a pretty sound. I like that long “A” at the end, and “sun” is nice, too. I agree that any day of the week brings to mind the Adams Family’s Wednesday. And I’m also sort of thinking of a delicious sundae… So, no, I definitely wouldn’t use it, but then I prefer names that are actually names.

I actually think the name Sunday is ok, but then when you write out Sunday Urban, I don’t like the way that looks or sounds. Maybe because it’s a noun and an adjective.

And Tessie is totally right – Rose helps a lot. It’s classic and pretty and it tones Sunday down a lot. If they’d gone with Monday or Withnuts for a middle name…

Yes! I could not figure out what Sunday reminded me of, and now I know, it’s Wednesday Addams!
I’m a little Eh on the name, but I also kind of don’t care. I’m mainly happy she didn’t use a name I want to use someday.
That being said, I am certain that it’s a sign of my weakening moral code, but Apple? I kind of love it now.
I also think it would be so cool to be one of those people who just thinks of a RIDICULOUS name and just goes for it. Total self confidence. I guess that’s why they are celebrities? I really wanted to name Eli (my son) Hopper, but I just couldn’t do it.

My neighbours had a cat named Sunday. It’s a good name for a PET…. not a person. There are so many lovely people-names out there, no need to use a name like “Sunday”.

I also think “Sunday Rose” is a fabulous stripper name… so I suppose she’s got her future career mapped out for her pretty well. ;-)

Two thumbs down. I’m not a fan of these types of names at all. I like a little more “normal/traditional”.

If they call her “Rose” as one commenter said above, then it’s much better.

Oh! My sister and I were discussing this just last night. She is in the absolutely hate camp and I’m…not so convinced.

I think the name Sunday is pleasing to say, lends itself to a nice nickname “Sunny”, and is easy to spell and say while not being common. Perhaps it even has personal meaning for the Kidman-Urban duo… Keith Urban has a couple of songs that reference the word like “Raining on Sunday”.

I think Rose is classical and pretty and gives validity to the name itself. However, it’s the part of the name I like least because it’s also an object name (like Sunday) and because I think it’s becoming the new “stereotypical” middle name. (Half the new baby girls I know have Rose or Grace as their middle names)

I think it’s pretty, though the Kidman Urban part of the name is a little clunky… it’s not hyphenated, right?. And I find it a little funny that a flower is “acceptable”, but a day of the week is not.

I was going to make the same comment as still awake sarah about a possible nickname being Sunny, which is cute, but I didn’t consider the full name most likely being sliced down to Sunday “Sunny” Urban, which is ICK.

I wonder how they pronounce it in their Australian accents? If it’s “Sundie” or “Sun-day”. Not that it really matters but I was curious.

I think it’s cute. It’s feminine based on the way it looks and it’s unique. Sunday Rose, to me, does not sound like a stripper name. It sounds sweet and pure.

I was thinking about this one this morning. Perhaps their intention was to capture her birth as being a sunny day in their lives?

I think perhaps there could have been better ways to include ‘sun’ into her name though. Sundie maybe. Sunlee? I don’t know, I’m a bad name maker-upper.

Her whole life people will ask, oh is it because you were born on Sunday? And she’ll have to say, nope! Crazy Parents!

I definitely don’t hate it, but I’m not sure if I like it or am simply neutral. It reminds me of the Thursday Next novels, which I adore, so that might be skewing my judgement. I love Rose (it’s my daughter’s middle name too) even though it is becoming a bit ubiquitous as a middle name – plenty of people who don’t follow naming trends have no idea. It’s not like the SSA releases a most popular middle names list. :) I think the first and middle names flow really nicely, and no one can really help how your last name sounds. I think Kidman Urban is a tough last name combo to work around.

Jaime- Even funnier: certain flowers are acceptable, but certain others are not. Rose, Violet, Lily—all good. But bring out Zinnia or Geranium and you get funny looks. And certain months are acceptable, but certain others are not. April, May, and June are all normal girl names, but bring out February and it’s another story. It’s the glorious world of naming conventions!

Reminds me of that Sheryl Crow song- “he’s got a daughter he calls Easter, she was born on a Tuesday night…”

If an average person named their baby Sunday, it would probably beg a few questions and require explanation. However, being that these are celebrities, seems like anything goes. It’s certainly not the strangest name out there. And I think it’s kind of cute, although I don’t like it enough to use it on my own baby.

i don’t hate sunday as much as i could (what with it being NOT A NAME) but i think it’s really awful with urban – like -R- says, it’s a noun, adjective. sunday smith, for example, i could get behind a little more. sunday pitt-jolie. sunday urban i have more trouble with.

I’m OK with Sunday, but isn’t it a little close to Suri? The whole Su- thing? Also, didn’t Tom and Katie ::think:: that Suri meant “rose” in some other language or something?

If I was Nicole, those are things that would have made me steer clear of the name.

I also don’t care for the object + object, but it’s certainly not terrible.

Oh, and I kind of like Apple. Doubt I would do it, but at least people can spell it!

I once knew a woman (she’d be in her fifties now) who’s name really was Sundae.

I also know a 4-year-old girl whose middle name is Soleil, which I love. It’s so adorable when you ask her what her name is she says “____ Soleil, Soleil means sunshine.” Her dad is French.Just throwing that out there.

I like Sunday. It’s better than another weekday name. It’s like that rhyme “Sunday’s child is full of grace. . . “

I actually DON’T like Rose with it because I think Grace would have gone kick-butt with it. Sunday Grace. And another commenter mentioned she doesn’t like Sunday Urban and I have to agree on that point. But I think that Sunday is far and way better than Apple, though Apple is adorable for a little girl (the jury’s out on how it translates into an adult name).

Anyway, I think they could have done worse!

I don’t like it. I thought of Wednesday Adams immediately, and it creeps me out.

Also, I don’t think Apple is in the same league. We name children after flowers, months, seasons, attributes…. In that same vein, why not fruit? And Apple seems feminine to me. But days of the week? Not sold.

Also, if they want to call her Rose, why not just name her Rose? I still don’t get when people pick a first name they don’t plan on using. It seems like a missed opportunity to me.

    Honor, Sunday, what’s next?

In sound and looks, Sunday Rose is a very pretty name. I want to like it. But in practice, it will be a pain because nobody sees “Sunday” as a name, only a day of the week. Quite confusing to have to live with all your life. Plus it seems rather capricious: why name your daughter Sunday? (I knew a girl whose middle name was Monday, but never asked her mother why. One of the regrets of my life.)

I do wonder why days of the week don’t count as names, only certain flowers count as names, and only a few months count as names. Our naming culture is so strange. One reason why I love thinking about it!

I’m with the comment elizabeth made… glad she didn’t use a name I love. My 15 month old son’s name is Max, which I had NO IDEA was popular until I joined a playgroup after he knew his name already. I felt sick when I found out three celebrities named their sons Max.
About Sunday Rose: don’t hate it, don’t like it. The two last name thing is a mouthful.

As previous commentors said, I like Sunny as a nickname. If there is a reason behind naming her Sunday, I want to know! Why else name her that? I don’t hate it but it’s just kinda “why” ???

I posted about this on my blog and asked about the two last names without the hyphen. I like the idea but agree that it’s not as easy to get away with if you are not a celeb.

I love that people are being so honest about this, since most of the time they’re always like “Ooh I, um, love the name xxx. It’s so interesting!” Now it’s like Swistle is giving us free rein to say how we really feel!
So do we know for sure they’re calling her by her middle name? That would be more normal to me. But it’s also like, yes, they’re ‘celebrities’ they need to be ‘unique.’ *rolls eyes*

Sorry, but I really don’t like Sunday. No.
I like Rose though. That last name is tough to work with though, and you can guarantee there won’t be any Sundays in her Kindergarten class.

I’m confused as to why they named her Sunday when she was born on a Monday. Seems kinda weird.

I don’t like Sunday Urban. However, if they call her Sunday Rose, I DO like that.

There is an actress named January Jones. I have no idea where the person who says that they are calling her by her middle name got that info because I’m a big celeb fan (loser) and I haven’t heard that.

What do you think about Matthew McConaughey naming his son Levi? I’ve loved this name for quite a while, but now I fear that this is going to become a hugely popular name since he used it.

@ Barb @ Get Up and Play: As an Australian with a reasonably similar accent to Kidman (ie. city accent, not outback, though there’s a broad range of Australian accents just as the American accent varies so much), they would pronounce it simply “Sun-day”. Just with shorter vowels than the average American accent would pronounce.

As for me, I like it.

I like it well enough for the child of someone I don’t know and will probably never meet. I think part of the reason we’re seeing so many Rose as middle name is the same reason Kidman Urban (allegedly) used it – a grandmother. I’m seeing baby Rubys everywhere, which is a name in my backpocket, because it was my grandmother’s name.

As a Jennifer who chooses to use her middle name Rayne – and I knew an Ethel who used her middle name Januari – it’s nice to have a normal name and an usual noun name to choose between as an adult.

Well, I’m a Jan named after the month of January though I was born in another month. But at least there’s a story behind it, which may also be true of Sunday. If I had to pick a day of the week for a name, Sunday is good. I agree that Sunny rolls off the tongue more easily. I’m also in the camp that doesn’t love it or hate it and doesn’t think the entire name flows very well.

In response to Kate – I don’t know how popular a name Levi is down there in the States, but it has been a popular name here in rural Saskatchewan for a lot of years. It’s a cowboy name. I bet you’d see it a lot on Rodeo rosters.

I heard on the news that Sunday came from Sunday Reed, who had a long time relationship with, and became muse of Australian artist Sidney Nolan at the beginning of the century. Rose, apparently, was after Keith’s grandmother.

I kind of like it, for a celebrity baby name. But I HATE Rose with it. I think Sunday Elizabeth would have been better…because now it just sounds like a floral variety or something. But the Sunday part is okay, for a weird name, anyway….

Sunday Urban sounds like a clothing outfitter for men. With faded jeans with holes and pictures of dark glaring models with too long hair?

Not like a little peachy of a girl. But, even so, I don’t think it is a *horrible* name. I don’t absolutely hate it.

My husband and I chose to have a hyphenated Last-Name for ourselves and our children. Not because it is a celebrity hollywood thing. Because it is an equality thing.

I like it, but I am partial to odd names, since my husband is very sensible and won’t let me go crazy with names. I think it sounds really Southern, honestly, which they’re NOT, but still. It would be cute if they called her Sunny, though. But I do agree that Sunday Urban is a little weird.
