Shower Curtains

I am looking for a new shower curtain. I liked our old one very much: I got it at Target, and it was in the muted colors I like, and it had squirrels and owls and trees. I thought I had a better picture of it in a post somewhere, but this post about finding a matching valance is the best photo I can find.

Then Paul painted the bathroom bright deep yellow, despite the fact that the last time we discussed the topic it emerged that we have non-intersecting opinions about yellow: I like muted yellows with a touch of brown; he likes preschool yellows with a touch of crayon. After trying and trying and finding no yellows even close to being in common, I said, “Well, it can’t be yellow then.” Several months went by. Then, when I was away one weekend, he painted it one of his yellows. I have not discussed the new paint here before now, even though it happened back in May, because it is hard to know where to start and what to say, and also marriage sometimes seems like a really dumb concept. But anyway, the bathroom is yellow. Like a marigold yellow which is, at least, not one of the yellows I hate. And now my shower curtain looks all wrong with it. Which is okay, because I was getting a little tired of the shower curtain.

Flamingo shower curtain. There are two ways to tell if something is in style, or coming into style:

1. Suddenly you like it, even if you hadn’t given it much thought before, and yet it feels as if you are among the few to notice the appeal, and

2. it is curiously available—but not OVER-available.

So for example, if I am out shopping and I see something patterned with flamingos, and I think, “Oh!! FLAMINGOS! Cool! Unusual! Hard to find!,” and then a week or two later I see some flamingo-patterned socks, and then I have the urge to sit at my computer browsing for more flamingo things, and then I add flamingo earrings to my wish list, I can be relatively certain flamingos are coming into style and/or already in style.

Advantage to this particular flamingo shower curtain: flamingos
Disadvantage: doesn’t immediately strike me as being good with strong yellow walls

Flamingos, second attempt. I think this one would be much better with the yellow.

Something I had not realized before starting an online shower-curtain search is how much more…varied the selection is than what is available in stores. For example:

I love the giraffe that might not go with your yellow and the library (books) one – I think it would go with any color!

I have to admit it…. After seeing this post, within 5 minutes I had purchased the mini storm trooper one.

    These are ridiculous.

Also for what’s it’s worth- without actually knowing exactly what your bathroom looks like, I like the Paisley one. Seems like it would compliment a bright yellow.

I am overly excited! Ok not about your yellow bathrooms but about the shower curtains. We moved over the summer and need to purchase a new shower curtain for a bathroom for two girls. I had this idea that we’d go to a local store and find cute toothbrush holders and shower curtain and bath mat and it could coordinate, since I’ve never actually done that type of decorating in a bathroom before. But all the options at the stores are blah. I want something big and bright and wild while I can still steer my kids in that direction.
Anyway, I am pleased to see that so much is available on Amazon, and am enamored of the cat and snowcone.

I bought this from Amazon: https://amzn.com/B00AYUM9WS in attempt to match an ugly bright yellow laminate bathroom vanity top fresh from 1985 (the other bathroom has a bright blue top, the third a bright orange!). I think once I get some gray towels, it might make the yellow feel INTENTIONAL instead of ICK. Also, I disagree with Elizabeth on the black and white. I think that would be super cute!

All my votes are for Forest Friends! I think it would look fun with yellow.

We have one of the new Pillowfort Target brand shower curtains and I really, really like it. (Actually I love everything I’ve gotten from the Pillowfort line to be honest. Stylish and reasonably priced.)

The forest friends is probably my favorite and I overwhelmingly disagree with Elizabeth and love the idea of black/white/bright yellow combo. The rugby stripe one you don’t like is probably what I would go with because I am boring, though the paisley one looks fun while still being in my comfort zone. I snort laughed at the first one “Paul wants bright”
My parents are very much in a marriage where they talk about each possibility, seem to agree on a direction, and then each one goes and does whatever s/he wants in the first place. I never understand why they even bother to talk about it.

I disagree with Elizabeth too – black and white is always ok with a bright solid color. BUT then you wouldn’t have the 2nd flamingo one, which is totally the one I love best.

But I *myself* am totally hankering for the fire-breathing walrus. We are thinking about having our bathroom renovated in the near future – wouldn’t it be amazing to see a contractor walk in on that thing? SO TOTALLY GETTING IT.

My faves to go with yellow are rainbow meditation and favorite floral. Also, I feel like some sort of passive aggressive rebellion is called for, like never flushing again after you pee so toilet water matches the walls, or maybe just throwing a red sock in with all Paul’s tighty whites at laundry time. He wants color? Let ‘er rip.

I also vote for a shower curtain with a hammock on it, so along with the wall color, you can always refer to it as ‘Paul’s banana hammock’, especially when giving guests directions during holiday events.

Reading this back, I’m kind of surprised no one has divorced me yet.

The Mandala one is my favorite, by a lot. The last shower curtain we bought, I let the kids pick out. I had hopes they’d get something fun or bright colored. But nope. They picked something out of the 1980’s faux southwest decor catalog. It’s muted yellows, brown and grey southwesty print. Very blah. But, they wanted it.

I like the Beautiful Mandala and the Forest Friends the best. I think black and white would look very nice with the bright yellow. I like the giraffes, but I agree that if the yellow doesn’t go well with the yellow on your walls, it could end up looking very off. I’m also not sure about Favorite Floral going well with that bright of a yellow.

And all those shower curtains at the bottom of your post, SO AWESOME.

I snort-laughed at some of these options because WHAT. Also, now I am sad that neither shower in our home requires a curtain. I may have to buy one anyway, just because.

I snort-laughed at a LOT of this post.

I vote Forest Friends, because once you temper the marigold with the black and white combo, I think you can also introduce gray with the towels and things and the whole room will feel much less like a preschool.

Target carries double-ended shower hooks,so you can hang your liner on the inner set of hooks and hang your curtain on the outer without ever having to take hooks on and off the rod. I am LAZY. To an almost pathological degree, but I happily change my shower curtain every few weeks because it is so easy to do with those hooks.

I love the idea of a guest shower curtain or just revolving shower curtains, in general. You could start a little collection and put Paul in charge of switching them out whenever you desire a change.

As much as I love the books one, I worry about going with a dark color. It seems as if it might make the bathroom feel smaller, but maybe not. The second flamingoes one seems cheerful in all the right ways, the forest friends could be really fun, and I am quite surprised by how appealing I find the LEGO storm troopers. I think not the stripes or polka dots. And I like the possibilities of really pretty coordinating colors for towels & such in regards to the bubbly babies and the second flamingoes.

Years ago, my family decided to paint the bathroom. Although we all liked the idea of a blue, we were left with only a choice of yellow – because my brother’s already-painted-blue bedroom is caddy-corner to the bathroom, and, according to my mom, that would be too much blue, which apparently would be worse than going with a color that none of us likes (???). So. My mom and my brother liked one yellow: a bright, banana yellow; and I liked another: a soft, buttery yellow, that was actually a cream/neutral and not a yellow. They said that they had the majority, but I reminded them that my brother had gotten to choose the Christmas tree pretty much every year forever, and so it should be my turn to choose something. They reluctantly agreed. However, they made such a fuss about disliking my choice that I began to worry that my choice was actually the poorer one. So, when we got to Home Depot, I quickly handed their paint chip to the employee. Their color, not mine. But I did not mention this to them, because they were still going on and on about the suckiness of my color, which made me feel less inclined to tell them that they had won. We arrived back home, we painted the bathroom, and they said that their color would have been so much better, that this one looked atrocious all over the walls (TRUE). I told them that I had gotten their color, and I showed them the paint chip when they refused to believe me. I never got an apology, the bathroom is still that horrible yellow, and I am the one who both has to use it the most and who cares the most. This does nothing to help you, I realize, but know that I UNDERSTAND. And I would possibly advise you to choose something that you can live with, rather than something to spite Paul.

P.S. I like the second flamingo option, if you are looking for a mix of whimsy and simplicity. Plus, it has a white background, which should give you a little bit of the white-wall effect that you wanted.

I love this comment so much! I love that you chose your mom’s/brother’s color and they still hated it though the fact that they never apologized for being jerks about the color makes me sad.

It’s such a bad color. I wish that I were making this up.

On a different painting + family note: When I was a kid – young, but old enough to make a decision about my own space – I wanted to paint my room light purple. My mom said no, because she thought that I would get sick of it. It is important to note that we were planning on painting my room in a color that I wanted. That was the point of this. She had me choose a different color, and then she purchased one that was two shades lighter on the paint strip than the one that I wanted. I would like it NOW, but not then! And, well, I am [mostly] happy to say that, at twenty-three years of age, I painted my bedroom light purple. A color named “Magical,” even, because why not go all out. I wish that I could have had it when I was growing up instead, but it still feels really good to have done it.

I don’t know what the moral of this story is, or if there’s a moral at all. But, there you are.

(Let us know which shower curtain that you choose, please!)

I actually like the flamingos on the white background best. The yellow in their legs would be just enough to tie it to the walls, without having to be the exact same shade of yellow or adding to the overall yellowness of the room, the pink softens the yellow a bit while the yellow prevents the pink from being a statement of PINKNESS, and the white background gets you back some of what you’ve lost with the white walls.

I really want you to go with the periodic table. Top choice. Though I like Forest Friends and disagree with Elizabeth a bit. But Bubbly Babies makes me think of jellyfish which are so pretty and soothing. The storm troopers + daisies would be a great with the yellow…just saying. It’s so hard to decide but with Periodic Table you can learn while you poop (depending on your bathroom layout).

I vote mandala or paisley, for what it’s worth. When I was shopping for shower curtains, the online options actually led to overwhelm and then I bought a boring one from Target that serves us just fine. But that’s NOT my usual – I’m usually a good online option-sorter and decision maker! There were just so many choices, and so many slightly outside my price range of with shipping costs.

Had to laugh at “and also marriage sometimes seems like a really dumb concept”. May I suggest the Badbäck shower curtain from Ikea? I have it, and it’s adorable. The design is an assortment of seemingly random objects: a beach ball, a pair of glasses, an alarm clock, a tree, etc. Okay, maybe I’m making it sound weird, but it’s super whimsical and colorful and cute.

Oh, I really need the stormtrooper one. I may have to go buy it. And incidentally, while you may have been pointing it out as a example of the variety now available, I can’t help but notice that it would match your yellow bathroom perfectly.

But if stormtroopers aren’t your thing, then i would attempt to hit the complementary colours for a shower curtain – light blues, or maybe a bluey-grey. That might tone down the yellow, if that’s what you’re looking to do. I’d be worried that one of the really bright ones when combined with the yellow would make you wish for sunglasses inside your own room.

So many choices! One thing I’ve learned though while shopping and ordering from Amazon is that typically when there are tons of choices on a particular item and they are nothing like you find in stores, the product is usually shipping from another country (China) and will typically take 6-8 weeks to arrive AND once you finally get it, will be a piece of junk.

First, the shower curtains I want to vote for for your yellow bathroom: polka dots, forest friends (I think the black and white would look very sharp with the yellow. Also, to Paul: I see your bright yellow bathroom, and counter with as neutral a shower curtain as I can that still pops against your enthusiastic paint choice), and bubbly babies.

Second: how could I not give props to these ones too?:
That T Rex on a bicycle? Mind boggling! I love it! I mean, not for MY house, but man, how awesome would it be to see at a friend’s place?
