(See also: Which Pieces are in the See’s Candies Chocolate and Variety Box?)
Last time, I evaluated the Chocolate & Variety Box to see if I liked the included pieces enough to be worth saving $4.00/pound over a custom mix (it used to be a difference of $4.50/pound, but prices have changed again). That one was a no: it made more sense to get the Custom Mix, especially since the Custom Mix boxes tend to be a bit heavier than a pound.
Now I’m trying the Soft Centers box (FOR SCIENCE). Here’s the description: “Includes Lemon and Pineapple Truffles, Bordeaux™, Mocha, Buttercream, Butterscotch Square, Chocolate Butter and more.” Nice of them to mention seven flavors instead of five, but I STILL WANT MORE INFORMATION.
Here are the pieces in the box:
Blueberry Truffle (2)
Butterscotch Square
Dark Buttercream
Dark Chocolate Butter
Lemon Truffle (2)
Light Chocolate Truffle
Marzipan
Milk Bordeaux (3)
Milk Chocolate Butter
Milk Cocoanut (2)
Mocha (2)
Orange Cream (2)
Raspberry Cream (3)
Strawberry Cream
Notice that there was no pineapple truffle, so they must sometimes substitute flavors. I would have preferred more variety: a Raspberry Truffle instead of one of the three Raspberry Creams; a Milk Buttercream instead of one of the three Milk Bordeaux; an Apple Pie Truffle instead of one of the two Blueberry Truffles.
Of those fourteen types, four are ones I would order for sure. Four are ones I really like but might not think to order, and so would be especially pleased to see in an assortment. Two are ones I think are okay; three more I think are kind of meh. And one I actively dislike and would give to Paul. So for me, this box was good to try but not as good a value as a custom-mix box.
Wait but which were which? I love lemon truffle and Bordeaux is kind of an all time favorite but I haven’t tried many of the rest. I’m a nuts’n’chews girl all the way
I’m also curious which ones you like and which ones you don’t like. I love the marzipan, scotchmallows, and the dark butterchew (which for the non-See’s familiar people is caramel covered in dark chocolate.) The only one I’ve ever had that I will not eat is Rum nougat (it has maraschino cherries in it, and I just do not like the flavor.)
I tend to prefer the dark chocolate ones, but See’s is the only milk chocolate I will eat so I just get a regular ol’ nuts and chews and i’m happy as a clam.
I left that part out because it’s so personal-preference-based—that is, I’m not saying I don’t like a particular kind because It’s No Good or because the See’s version of it isn’t done well, I’m saying I don’t like it because it’s not one of my favorites from the box of assorted—but it might very well be someone else’s favorite.
I’d have been sad not to get the Pineapple Truffle. I put a couple in the box I just ordered (which won’t be here for another week or so). I finally solved my dilemma about the unavailability of Strawberry Truffles in the custom mix box by just ordering the little box of five Strawberry Truffles with the pound custom mix box.
There is a new flavor coming in my box – Orange Cranberry Nougat! Probably people who don’t like Rum Nougat will dislike this one too, though.
I was INDEED sad! The Pineapple Truffle is one in the category of “I might not think to order it, but then I’d be even more delighted to see one in an assortment.”
I am thinking of ordering another box JUST to try the Orange Cranberry Nougat (I like the Rum Nougat too!) and to get some Pineapple Truffles. A jury would not convict me.
Swistle, it is all your fault. After reading about these mysterious See’s chocolates, I decided I needed to investigate myself. YUM. They are seriously wonderful. I want an entire box of scotchmallows. Followed by an entire box of the dark butterchew. I bought a box of the dark assortment locally because the shipment cost of the custom box I couldn’t get over. I can handle $22 for the most amazing chocolates ever, but $8 shipping? No way! Do they ever do free shipping promos?
I am trying (mostly unsuccessfully) to limit myself to 2 pieces/day. I keep telling myself that the 5th (or 6th or 10th) bite is never as satisying as the first, so limit myself and savor the moment….though my guess is the box will be gone by the end of the weekend. :)
They have a free shipping deal on right now, but only over $55—but they also have a flat-rate-$5 on every order under $55 during the promotion. I now ONLY order during their free-shipping deals, because I find their shipping beyond my willingness to accept—especially with how FAST it INCREASES!
I get there catalogs every month, and it looks like they may have discontinued the Pineapple Truffle!! That was one of my family favorites…but it isn’t even in the catalog anymore. For Valentines Day however, they are making a White Chocolate Strawberry Truffle.
