New Updo, Second Attempt!

Yesterday I tried twisting both sides and ending in a French fountain. Today I tried one twisted side, with the twist higher, and ending in a messy side-bun—but with the bun high enough that it wouldn’t rest on my neck, because I don’t like that feeling.

Here’s the twisted side, with the twist higher this time

And the messy bun side, bun held from side-above with this dangerous-looking clip
Here’s a back view

I really like half-grown-out haircolor and sun damage for updos: it makes it so much easier to see the details!

I like this style, too. I feel like it’s a liiiiiitle bit college student, but I also think I need to get over that: first, because what I think of as “college-student style” is now likely to be thought of by actual college students as “mom style” (see also: plaid flannel shirt still serving duty), which is completely appropriate; and second, because this IS the kind of style I like to wear (again, see plaid flannel shirt), so even if it IS also the kind girls are currently wearing in college, then SO BE IT. They will just have to share, as will I.

Love it, you have gorgeous hair, half grown out color or not. I like the style a lot too. My hair is to fine for anything so awesome. :(

I have really short hair right now, almost pixie-short, and I love it, it’s so easy, and SO hard to grow out — but this is so pretty I almost want to. So you see how rashly, recklessly inspiring you are.

I almost never comment, and almost didn’t today, but I thought…in the way that I would want someone to tell me that there’s green stuff in my teeth, that I would want someone to say what I’m thinking. And what I’m thinking is, first…this looks amazing. I would even venture to say Pinterest-worthy. And second, that I really don’t like the clip in there. It’s too big and distracts from the gorgeousness of the updo. Also, it’s scary. And I can imagine that you just had that handy and used it to finish the updo so you could see what the ‘do itself looked like, and this is an experiment, and practicing is where you figure out what looks good and what doesn’t.

TL;DR: The updo is a mega-win. The clip needs to go.

I’m a newish mom and was heading out for a dinner with my (single, childless) friends last weekend. In my last minute scramble to get myself together I remembered this post and managed to actually get my hair done in a style that made me feel CUTE. So thank you so so much. Without this I probably would have just had a plain ponytail and felt under-done all night.

This is a really cute style – I love it so much, and you have gorgeous thick hair. I work on a college campus, and I don’t think this is college-y at all.

I love it! I think that one is perfect for you!

Ombre hair color is IN right now! You’re so on-trend!
(perhaps I’m watching too much Project Runway!?!)

If, as a purely speculative hypothetical example of course, one were kind of a hairstyle…er…shall we say, idiot, how would one go about figuring out how to manipulate the hair on one’s head into these results? Watch the same you tube videos made by 15 year-old girls over & over & over until something finally clicks?

    I’m asking for a friend.

fairydogmother- Ha ha! I am…not sure. What I did was practice french-braiding over the years, usually plastering it with hairspray because it was too loose otherwise, and then braided Elizabeth’s hair all summer before swimming lessons, and then tried a bunch of things that failed, and then gradually got the hang of it by feel—and STILL frequently screw it up! I think the most useful kind of practicing ended up being (1) the kind where I was just messing with my hair while in class or while watching TV and (2) the kind where I did it on Elizabeth’s hair first, so I could better figure out what I might be doing on my own head.

This is the answer I was afraid of. See, I USED to have this talent, but only for doing my own hair & could do it by feel. I could do an undersided (“backwards” by feel) French braid *only* on someone else’s hair (not as well as on my own though), but not by feel & it would take a few tries. Then in the last several years I have dislocated one shoulder & mysteriously screwed up my right elbow/wrist/hand (I am right-handed, of course!), and now I literally can’t move my arm or wrist the right way to do it, well, right. I still do a low, off center braid to over my left shoulder. But it is…not right. I’m just lazy & have to hide the damage I have done cutting my own (long, curly, so it hides a multitude of sins) hair. Which i also cant do properly because a) long curly hair! and b) I can’t move my arm/wrist how i need to. I am in over my head, literally!

Okay, this is pretty funny, really! (Also, Google made me change my name today. Jerks. Bonjour!)
