Giant Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

This school year is worse than last school year, schedule-wise. Last year, I had 3.5 hours three times a week with no kids, and I told myself sternly that I could spare 30 minutes (which is 60, including preparation and clean-up) for exercise on those days, and I did. This year, I have 2 hours five times a week, which is almost the same number of hours but doesn’t feel like it. Am I willing to spend half the day’s child-free time on exercise, even three of the five times per week? No, it turns out I am not. Do I instead invest that time in increased sugar consumption? Why, yes I do. So I am feeling marvelous all the time, as you can imagine.

Speaking of which: every year for the last three holiday seasons, I have seen at Target GIANT novelty Reese’s peanut butter cups. The first year, I marveled but did not buy, and later I rued it. So the second year, I determined to try some, so I put them on my wish list and I hinted to Paul, but he did not buy them for me. So the third year, I was definitely going to buy some for myself, but they were $10/package and I knew they’d go on sale for $8/package, so I waited—and they sold out before they went on sale, and I rued again.

This year I saw them at Target and they were already on sale for $8, so a pack came home with me.

I’m not sure this fully communicates the vast novelty size.

That’s better.

William felt it was important to compare the size of a single peanut butter cup to a quarter. Edward, meanwhile, loses the battle with his self-control.

I cut one cup into eight pieces. It didn’t make nice tidy wedges, but close enough. I had Paul advising me that I should have warmed the knife first, but I don’t think that would have helped.

Here’s what 1/8th peanut butter cup looks like. It’s about an ounce, which means it’s approximately the equivalent of 1 and 1/3rds regular peanut butter cup.

Our family consensus was that the proportion of peanut butter to chocolate was done very well (though it requires careful bite-strategies to make sure it STAYS right), and that this was a very fun novelty sort of thing. I can imagine starting a tradition of buying one package each year—maybe having it on the Friday after Thanksgiving, to kick off the Christmas season.

Big, fat, takes-up-a-lot-of-room in the giant ass stockings my MIL lovingly made for the kids SCORE!

Now lest I sound unappreciative, these stockings are amazing. She needlepointed each one and each took her over a year. Heirlooms for sure. That being said, OMG they are so HUGE!! As in, a box of clementines, movies etc could all fit in there with room for more. It is insane. I often fill them with underwear and socks. And this year all three will get deodorant!

    Thanks for the great idea!

I saw these the other day and got one for my husband’s stocking. He is a peanut butter fanatic and loves PB cups. I was so excited I did a little happy yelp in the aisle and got a few stares

My life got so much better when my youngest started full-day kindergarten. I could exercise more! Read more! Keep the house marginally cleaner (in ways that perhaps only I noticed, but still)! Work a part-time job!

Your mileage may differ, of course, but it’s less than a year until you find out.

That Reese’s cup is intriguing. I’ve never seen one like that. Wonder if it’s regional.

You said Edward wasn’t controlling himself, and I thought “Edward looks perfectly content sitting there…” and then I realized that it’s HENRY in the middle. He is such a young man already!

Anyway, Ed tried the giant one, and ate it in bites and thought it was too much PB.

I like how you made it a family affair!

I love that you wrote To: Swistle! and From: Swistle! on the package.

My only beef with the novelty RPBs is that they should be in a more festive, holiday-themed package. But I could probably set those feelings aside to try some.

wow, i’ve never seen those either! i tend to think even the slightly-larger-than-normal RBPCs are too heavy on the PB ratio, so i suspect i would find the same with these. my favorites are the super-teeny mini ones that are nearly all chocolate. :)

Oh jeez! HOW HAVE I NOT SEEN THESE BEFORE?! I guess there is a special trip to Target in my future. I also predict that both Hubby and MC will each be getting one in their stocking.

Too funny, thanks for researching the huge RC for us.

The first 3 years of my son’s life, he was @childcare 8 hours/day 2 days/week, and then we switched to 4 hours/day 4 days/week, moreover at facilities more distant from our home and less, um, sympathetic to the point that we want to drop the kid and run, and show up 2 minutes before closing, grab the kid, and go. While I think the shorter more frequent days were better for the kid, they definitely were not better for us, for precisely the kinds of reasons you mention.

On a positive note, 5 years into this childrearing thing (though I have just the one, so we mostly avoid lather-rinse-repeat), I have mostly realized that most of the time whatever is bugging me this year will not be bugging me next (having of course been replaced by some still more annoying problem), and that often helps.

I’ve never seen these! I kind of want one now, just to check it out. Of course, I think I’d need a family at least as big as yours to eat the thing.

I feel the same about exercise. I need enough time that I don’t feel like I’ve spent my whole time off exercising. And I KNOW that’s messed up!

Yeah, we don’t have those. Stupid Canada.

OMG!!! & here I thought I was in 7th heaven when they started making the Reese’s Minis (which don’t require unwrapping)

Target and/or CVS, here I come!

(thanks for the tip; my boy will LOVE these!)
