The Kind of Happiness That Comes From Material Things

I took Edward to two birthday parties this weekend. It felt like it took THE WHOLE WEEKEND. I didn’t do anything else the whole weekend except get a UTI and have the best doctor experience of my entire life: he wrote the prescription for enough to cover two treatments so I could use it next time without having to come in, and he said he only does the $500 lab work if there’s some reason to believe it’s not a totally routine UTI. So. That was a nice change.

Should we talk about how much I hate the new Blogger update (back in the editing/writing area—nothing visible up front here), even after giving myself time to get used to the change since I always initially resist change? No? Are you sure? I’m pretty sure it would be fascinating to hear me discuss at length how it both (1) hugely discourages people from using HTML and also (2) makes it hugely frustrating to do any editing without knowing/using HTML. …Still no? Really? Well, okay. But if you ever want to talk, I’m here.

Look at my cute new casserole dish:

Can you tell how cute/wee it is? It’s about 5″x5″. I should have put something in the picture for scale. There are some kid magazines on the shelf below it, but that’s insufficient. I got very frustrated because there’s no measurement marking on the dish, and I was trying to find it online but could only find the 1.5-quart version, and I got quite worked up before realizing I could, like, put volume into the dish, and see how much volume that turned out to be. It holds 2 cups, so it’s a .5-quart dish. Isn’t that adorable? It was on clearance at Marshalls for $5. I’m going to use it at Thanksgiving when I bake the single sweet potato only my dad eats.

This is not an excellent photo (reflections + needs polish + busy background), but I can’t believe I almost didn’t see (and then almost didn’t buy) this reading-mousie candlestick, considering how much I love it now. It was in a used furniture store for $5. That’s his tail wrapping around and holding up his reading light.

Paul got me this book for Mother’s Day. I was pretty thrilled, since I’d been agonizing over whether to buy it myself or wait until Christmas/birthday to get it. I commented on what a good idea it was to get something with “Mother” in the title for Mother’s Day, and he was like, “Oh! Is that what it’s called? I just remembered you liked that author and saw she had a new book out. Huh!”

I have a whole list of what I dislike about the new Blogger interface! I too dislike change just because it’s change, but there are things about the new Blogger that I still really dislike after weeks of using them, so I think in this case it’s them, not me. And now I think I have a topic to post about today!

I’m impressed Paul remembered you liked that author! I bet my husband would have no idea what authors I like (probably because I haven’t really ever TOLD him).

I’m tempted by those Le Creuset casserole dishes every time I go to Marshalls.

Elizabeth- Yes! And he ALSO brings home books for me if he sees some at the library he thinks I’ll like, and he’s made a project of finding more of the very narrow window of graphic novels I like. *happy sigh*

Paul sounds like my husband; way to go Paul! My husband keeps a list of a few author’s I like and if it’s a series the ones I already have! Awesome!

Do you get that thing where bad online layouts/ functionality makes your eyes feel like they’re crossing or trying to go in different directions, so every time you come away from them your whole body feels irritable?

Blogger’s new layout doesn’t do that for me, so much, but man, our library’s “new” (it’s been TWO YEARS. OF HELL) main search page does.

And those three things? Would make me happy if I got them as presents. I don’t often think that, but for these: yes. (Although for the tiny casserole it would depend who it was from – a gift from my stepmother-in-law, and I would think grumpily, “Why did she get me this? Who even uses this size? Why not get me something USEFUL, for once?” Which I suppose makes me both ungrateful and biased.)

I hope you post of review of Are You My Mother? I’m not quite half way through it, but I switched over to a book with shorter chapters because I don’t seem to be getting any long chunks of time to read and I hate quitting mid-chapter so I haven’t picked it up in over a week.

My tentative take is that I like it but not as well as Fun Home.

Ugh, Blogger is not currently on my happy list either. I did figure out that if I load the “New Post” page from my history (from before the switch) I can still get the old “New Post” page. So much easier!

Now I’m slightly ashamed that I’m not computer-savvy enough to hate the new Blogger interface. It threw me at first, but now I like it because I can put pictures where I want them to go instead of having to move the code around after I add them all. And that’s all I know. Sigh.

I’m with you on blogger. It doesn’t see to understand that I want SPACE between paragraphs

I end up putting in all my own p tags just to get space!

I think it is because I compose in a word processor and then paste my entries in, so I don’t have to worry about typos or the internet crashing or kids interrupting or whatever. (once I accidentally closed my browser while I was composing because I got up to do something else.)

After the tale of Paul, the thing that makes me happiest about this post is the evidence of your love for Judith Martin. I love her.

I’m always delighted when oldest has a birthday party to go to as he is 9 and, therefore, he just gets dropped off and picked up and not a thought is given about him in between times as I know he’s having an awesome time.

Conversely I hate it when youngest has a birthday party to go to. She is not quite 3 and, therefore, I have to stay and socialize with parents I hardly know and be surrounded by insane toddlers for two hours. For me it’s the very definition of exhausting.

I love your mouse and your dish very much. Also your doctor experience. It’s about time you had an easy one!

    1. New blogger is sooooo bad. Soooooo bad. I’m irrationally angry over it, but in this terribly frustrating impotent way because it’s not like I can DO anything about it. Feh!

    2. Casserole dish is cute and I love the color.

    3. That mouse candlestick is SO FABULOUS.

I love that mouse candlestick so much.

Also, am very interested to know which graphic novels you like. There seems to be a lot of superhero/post-apocalyptic misery to wade through to find the odd gem. I discovered Posy Simmonds’ Tamara Drewe (source of the recent movie) a couple of weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I feel the need to acknowledge your AWESOME doctor. Seriously, I would move to your town if I could, just to avoid the agony of arguing about that stupid lab test.

Assvice ahoy! Do you use a PC? Do you know about Windows Live Writer? It’s SO much easier to write blog posts. It’s free and likely already on your computer, but if not, it’s easily downloadable. It can be used across blog platforms and photo uploading is a breeze and it’s so much better than the Blogger interface.
