Sad Cat Update

I’m afraid we found Benchley’s body, in a large dense shrub in our yard. I’d looked there once already, but he’s only visible from one angle, and his fur is the same color as the brown leaves under there. We looked again this afternoon after seeing our other cat hanging around that area.

The most likely is that he was hit by a car, but we had trouble getting close enough to the body to see. I mean, we were able to confirm he was dead, but I think he’s been there since Monday/Tuesday so we didn’t want to…… Anyway.

We’re all sad, of course, but the children are resilient:

Me, weepily/carefully: “*sad news*”
Them: “*sad*…*pause*…Can we get a new cat?”

He was a very nice cat, so I’m sad—but more than that, I feel so grateful to KNOW.

Also so so so sorry to hear this, but glad you all KNOW. I had the same thing happen with a cat of mine in college, and it was just so nice to know, and not worry. So sorry.

Oh, no. I am so sorry. That stinks. At least the kids are handling it well. That is the sweetest picture of him. Hoping for only the fondest memories of Benchley for you & your family.

Oh, no. I’m so sorry to hear this! But also glad that you have closure. And that your kids are being so resilient about it. But still. So sorry! What a sweet cat.

I am really sorry, but really glad you know.

    And I love that picture.

(Bless the beasts and the wildly insensitive children, I guess?)

Oh. Oh, no. Man. I’m more sad about this that I thought I’d be. Poor kitty.

(I will agree that it’s best to KNOW, as we had a cat disappear and we’ve never found out why, and I STILL dream about it and feel so unsettled six years later.)

Oh no! I feel so sad for you all. Benchley was such a handsome lad. I’m glad you at least know where your little guy is but my heart is full of sadness that he isnt with you anymore.

I’m sorry. I too really thought I’d hear about him coming home in a few days, maybe thin and with a few scratches from his adventures. :(
There’s seems to be a lot of sad pet stuff going on with people lately.
Glad your kids aren’t overly upset about it, at least. I’m sorry for YOU!

The one bad thing about our pets is that we tend to outlive them. I’m sad for your loss but hope that closure brings some peace. Benchley was dearly loved, and you have a tender portrait to remember him by.

Oh, Swistle. I’m so sorry that it ended this way. If he had to go now, I’m glad that you were able to find out and get some closure, but this just sucks so much. I’m glad that he was able to live such a well-loved life.

Oh dear, that is such sad news. He was such a beautiful kitty, with that lovely white spot on his nose. I’m glad you have closure, though, and that the kids are being resilient.

That is just not the update I was expecting or hoping for. I’m so sorry Swistle, for you and your family. But I am glad that at least you know. RIP Benchley.

I’m sorry about Benchley too. Losing a pet is very heart-wrenching. But then there’s my son.
The hamster had died. I’d just discovered it. My 6-year old ran into the house with a friend in tow. “Want to play with my hamster?” he said as they blew in. “Oh, honey”, I say, looking for the right words, “I’m so sorry, but Ralph has died”. “Oh”, he says. “Hmmmm. Well, want to see my dead hamster then?”.
