Movies

I think we should have a poll. My sister-in-law, my sister-in-law’s sister, and I are planning to go see a movie this weekend. What should we see? Oscar-nominated Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy? Oscar-nominated animated shorts? Rampart? This Means War, which my sister-in-law says got an intriguing review in Entertainment Weekly (the gist was that it was contrived fluff the reviewer nevertheless completely enjoyed)? Chronicle? Something else that’s still playing in theaters?

Let’s have a poll over to the right (below the ad). [Poll closed; see results below.] And give the reason for your vote in the comments if you can, because that can be so helpful for determining if we should take the advice or not (“I think you should watch X because it’s SUPER TERRIFYING! I barfed for WEEKS!” “I think you should watch Y because it made me really think about how awful the world is and how there’s nothing we can do about it!”).

I voted, but just want to let you know that I always had to read through a reader because your site was blocked by my work’s spam filter, but no longer! It’s the small things in life, you know?

Poll not showing up on my iPad, but I saw the descendants last week and really liked it from a similar to real life sort of way…. I liked thinking about what I would do in a is liar situation.

I think you should see This Means War because a) Chris Pine, b) I love anything with Reese Witherspoon and would like to see her in more things, and c) Chris Pine. I realize those are more like MY reasons to see it, but unfortunately I won’t be seeing any movies in theaters any time soon so I look forward to your hilarious review.

I voted for Chronicle not because I’ve seen it, but because I’d like to see it but am most likely not going to get to the theater any time soon. And I’m somewhat of a geek so the premise is appealing.

I saw Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and I had no idea what it was about. I spent 2 hours thinking eventually I would understand and I didn’t. I left feeling befuddled. I was with my friend, the veterinarian, who is no dummy and she was lost too, so it wasn’t just me.

I voted Other because ahhhhhhh noooooo Tinker Tailor is a snooze fest. Is the Artist playing near you? I’ve been on a quest to see as many Oscar movies as I can and it’s my favourite so far.

if you’ve seen the descendants and the artist, i would suggest the animated shorts. i haven’t seen them, but that’s my first choice from your list.

i keep failing to prove i’m not a robot. sigh.

Oh god, I can’t believe 9 people voted for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy! It’s incomprehensible! (Maybe they haven’t seen it?) I voted for Chronicle because it’s the one I really wanted to see last weekend and that we didn’t get to. I also think The Grey looks like a great popcorn movie.

I voted for Chronicle because I think it looks kind of different and interesting and not based on a comic book. But This Means War might be fun in a laugh-your-ass-off-at-stupid-sex-jokes-with-other-girls kind of way, which I enjoy, especially at this time of year. Either way, hope you have a great time.

I didn’t vote, because I haven’t really heard of any of the movies – although is the descendants still playing? Because I would maybe see that – but I wanted to add my voice to those saying NOT Tinker Tailor. That movie is boring as hell, confusing and ridiculously long. It was a complete disappointment and I can’t figure out why anyone would like it.

    The Artist.
Wow. Beautiful to look at and listen to and the story is timeless. And damn, they did a wonderful job of it.

Tinker Tailor is the anti-thesis of what you’ve come to expect from a Gary Oldman movie. But I liked it. A lot.

I voted for “This Means War”, only because it seems like a possible fun options for a girl’s night out. I find it hard recommending movies to others, because sometimes people have different tastes than me! I feel like I’d like to go see “This Means War” for fun, so maybe you would too, haha.

I voted for The Artist…amazing. My husband runs a film society, and for Tinker Tailor the studio brought “dossiers” for the movie characters, and even after reading them, the society members hated the movie.

Ok, at first I voted TTSS because spy/action movies seem cool, then I read the rest of the comments and changed my vote to This Means War. Because, I echo, A) Chris Pine B) Whatever else they said and C) Chris Pine. It looks cute and enjoyable for a movie to see with female friends.

I saw The Descendents and it was good, but a downer. I would love to see The Artist, especially right before the Oscars, but I kept getting voted down the two times we’ve gotten to the movies lately.

We did go see Chronicle on Sunday night. It was…ok. If you get out to the movies often and this isn’t a special occasion/once-a-year type of movie date then I ok Chronicle. But it wasn’t anything special and the ending was a bit disappointing and the plot premise was vague.

Where is the Hunger Games already?!

I voted for the animated shorts. Every other movie, you’ll be able to catch on dvd or netflix at some point. The shorts, probably not. There’s also bound to be something in there for everyone, and lots to talk about and compare. Sounds like the perfect thing to go watch with a couple of people.

I vote for the fluffy action movie because a) fluff is fun; b) even if there are terribly stupid parts and ridiculous plot lines, you’ll likely enjoy talking those over; c) it is the weekend, and time to give your brain a rest from THINKING, especially if it going to be thinking about war and other such spirit killing subjects; and d) I hear there are adorable men in that movie, and feasting on eye candy sounds like a lovely way to spend a Saturday.

Okay, I know everyone’s opinions will vary, but I saw “This Means War” last weekend and really hated it. I love romantic comedies, I was hoping for something fluffy, and I was willing to forgive a magnitude of faults, but this movie was rather upsetting bad (for me). The woman gets stalked, spied on, ridiculously mistreated, and somehow in the end it’s supposed to be okay because “it’s love.” Again, I know everyone’s opinions on this kind of thing will vary, but personally, I wish I had seen something else.
