Going through the kids’ valentines, I kept getting startled at something I’d SEEN ON THE INTERNET. Like, I JUST saw the “I dig you” favors on She Likes Purple, and there was one in Henry’s valentines bag! And someone else used Etsy candy bar wrappers! And someone else did that idea where you take a picture of your child holding out his/her hands, and then spear a lollipop through the photo hands like they’re holding it!
I was so amazed! I was like, “How did all of YOU find the internet??” For all I go around assuming everyone is online, I guess I assume no one is online. My life could be TEEMING with bloggers and I wouldn’t even know it!
I did those picture valentines last year and got so many compliments. I was SHOCKED no one else had seen them on the internet!
I’m impressed. I swear our area hasn’t found the internet yet. People are ALWAYS asking me “where did you find that? and “how did you come up with that?”.
I had this moment yesterday! Tony brought home a bag of Valentine’s – of which we lazily bought some storebought stuff, NOT EVEN WITH CANDY – and in the bag was one of those melted-down crayon hearts.
I immediately asked Tony, “Who gave you this? Do you know who their momma is?” He’s four. Not only did he not know, he also did not care.
I am always astounded when a “regular” person has seen something I know about on the internet. Also, sometimes I feel like they are SPYING!
Sarah Lena- YES, I forgot about those, Elizabeth got some of the melted-crayon hearts too!
HereWeGoAJen- ME TOO. I felt suddenly EXPOSED.
I am pretty sure they are all just now (and I mean like they joined on Feb. 13th!) getting on Pinterest, though, and not finding these ideas on actual blogs!
Every mom who did Valentines at playgroup yesterday was like “Have you heard of this Pinterest thing? Such cute ideas!!”
For the record, I did the hand-holding-the-lollipop which I saw on someone’s blog LAST year and have been thinking about at least once a week ever since.
What’s cute is, how the kids react to that hand-holding-the-lollipop thing. “THAT’s SO COOL HOW DID THEY DO THAT??” Heh. The Internet, duh. (I didn’t say that to my kid, but I thought it!)
Yes, where I live it seemed like everything I did/saw/tried someone was asking me where I found/learned/heard it. The Internet of course! Now it seems more people are getting more comfortable with actually browsing outside of their comfort range and exploring new exciting corners of the Internet.
However, now it’s made it hard to decide what to say send my daughter to school with for Valentine’s because some of the newly “omg have you heard of the Internet” moms think the item I send with her I stole from them! It’s the Internet, everyone can see it!
I always feel so weird starting everything with “I saw this cute idea on the Internet..” when talking to non-crafty, non-Internet savvy friends. But it is also weird to have random friends from college, etc, who have discovered Pinterest saying “I saw your Valentines from your blog on Pinterest!” (Did you get any Star Wars Lego Valentines with glow stick light sabers? That was my idea!)
In my moms group last week someone had an announcement. When she started with “I’m a blogger, and…” and almost went “you’re a WHAT?” I did check out her blog and she exclusively blogs about Montessori activities she does with her daughter, so I guess we don’t run in the same circles. (Not that I don’t LIKE Montessori, I just don’t happen to do it much or blog about it ever).
That was supposed to say *I* almost went “you’re a WHAT?”
I’m sure they were all ideas from pinterest, it’s the next great time waster. I personally love it :)
Wow. I guess no one in my town has discovered the Internet, because all my kid got were those cheese ball folding cards from the cheapy store with tattoos.
It’s ponderings like this where I love reminiscing on the late Senator from Alaska Ted Stevens’ words, “The Interent: a series of tubes…”. Because I’m a political DORK.
The conundrum of Pinterest/Internet is that it’s chock full of ideas, which I’d love to make, but I’m too busy wasting time on it to, you know, actually make. Unless it’s a dessert recipe. Then I’ve got all the damn time in the world.
Yes, I have definitely felt more inadequate in all holiday-related goings-on since joining pinterest.
I do this too! For some reason, I always feel like I am the ONLY ONE who is on twitter or pinterest or knows about etsy, etc. And then I get paranoid that they are reading my blog & I don’t know it (while I’m not anonymous, I don’t tend to share my blog with more than a couple of my fellow townsfolk).
I totally sent Etsy valentines you recommended on Milk and Cookies, Swistle. And my kids only got normal foldover valentines (with candy), except one obviously handmade collage one and one that had an arrow drawn on it and a pencil stuck through to make the shaft of the arrow, which I thought was cute. For the first year ever, I felt like I won. :)
