The third room is done! This is the room that used to be pale pink when it was Elizabeth’s. Now it will be William and Henry’s. William wanted the room to be blue and green; Henry wanted it to be blue and orange. So Paul painted almost the whole room blue (Behr Jamaican Sea, 510B-5), except in the part where the bunk beds would go, where he painted the upper-bunk area green (Behr Tart Apple 420B-4) and the lower-bunk area orange (Behr Orange Spice 250B-5):
Today we moved the bureaus around (we’re doing some switching around of those, too), and then moved the two that will be William’s and Henry’s down to their room. Tomorrow the bunks will move down and we’ll see how it looks with the colors.
So now it’s time to choose a paint color for OUR new room. Here’s a photo of our room I was luckily able to find in another post, since our room is currently halfway dispersed between the computer room and the living room:
I like that quilt. I’d like the wall color to go well with it. But my only color-choosing skillz lie in looking at something and MATCHING a color to it. And yet—I don’t want our wall color to match any of the colors from the quilt. Opinions? Maybe just do cream walls this time?
I have a dark grey room – which looks like it would work with that quilt along will 1000000 other things when you get tired of your quilt. I love my grey room.
I don’t know.. I’m kinda liking the idea of an olive green or chocolate brown room! But I had a gray room when I was a kid (my choice) and I loved it! And every color pops against it. But now I prefer warmer colors, but I hate cream because it’s too close to “builder white”
I have a quilt similar enough to that that I wonder if they are the same brand? I bought mine at TJ Maxx, but I don’t know what brand it is… ANYWAY.
I was totally stumped by your question. My own walls are dark dark green wallpaper (thanks, previous owners! I especially love the accent boarder you chose that features MONKEYS!), and I’ve been wanting to paint them too, before baby comes… And I just realized that I wouldn’t know what color to paint mine, either.
Oh! But then, I DID just notice that on one side of my quilt it’s a similar check pattern, but on the other side it’s flowered, and the flowered side has some really soft blues and purples that look great with the other colors. So maybe a really gentle/light lavendar (almost grayish, but definitely leaning on the purple side of gray) or a soft blue?
Anyway, I’LL BE INTERESTED TO SEE what you pick!
I’d pick a nice buttery color to go with that quilt. Slightly more yellow than cream, but not all out sunshine. That way, if you ever choose a different quilt, you’re not so limited.
And PS: I’m dying to see what the boys’ room looks like with the bunkbeds in place. Please share!
Also, meant to say that I love the boys’ room so far! What a cool way to give each kid what he wanted in a paint color!
I need to remember this idea for the boys’ room.
What about some khaki/tan shade?
a nice light creamy grayish-greenish beige? Any of the Benjamin Moore Classic Colors from number 960 to 976 would look nice (all BM paint chips will have a number in the bottom right corner. Some of the names are Olympic Mountains, Tapestry Beige, Gray Mist, etc. You can also type in the number on the search bar of the BM website and it will pull up the color for you.)
Or a nice light green that isn’t the same color as the green in the quilt but a couple shades light?
Or cream would look nice too :-)
I like the boy’s room idea…its a great way to make everyone happy.
Yes, grey! Light grey or medium grey would also work very well with that comforter. And if you wanted, you could do a a horizontal stripe or something of a color from the comforter. I can’t wait to buy my next house so I can also have a grey room!

I like the suggestion of a nice buttery color. I used to have darker colors in my house, and then when we put it on the market, the Realtor sternly told me to use Pottery Barn Colors, lighter colors, and I did and I was impressed at how much bigger all the rooms looked with lighter colors.
I love the kids rooms!
There’s a taupe-y, tan color in that quilt as well as a gray color. I’d choose one of those to be the wall color- it will coordinate but not look matchy.
LOVE the boys room! Such a cute idea to do the bunk bed areas diff. colors for their tastes.
For your room I would do a grey I think. One of our friends just moved into a new condo and he painted the whole thing this light grey – I think Arabian Nights? was the name? and it looks REALLY nice. Just enough color to not be as boring as white, but still really neutral to go w/ everything.
I also struggle with color choice. The person who we bought our house from had just paid lots of money to have it painted in 9 million shades of tan, and we were hesitant to mess with a professional paint job. Your bright, fun colors are giving me serious wall envy. You have done an amazing job in the other rooms, can’t wait to see what you pick! I am definitely intrigued by the gray suggestions…
Ooh, you should totally buy a mood board from Young House Love. They are really good at the color thing.
My entire house is all one very neutral tan color because it came that way and I feel completely incompetent to change it. Frankly, choosing colors and paiting really scares me. I have really enjoyed your posts on painting your home and love all of the colors you’ve chosen so far. Since I’m not good with painting, I couldn’t give you specific color but whenever I hear the “experts” talk, they say things like “use bright colors that bring light into the room.” That quilt is really fun so hopefully you’ll find something that you really like to complement it. Also, your husband seems to be quite talented in the painting area. Your sons’ room is so fun and creative and I’m just really impressed!
I’m a fan of warm neutrals (tans) as opposed to cool neutrals (grays).
I went looking on the Behr website, and in their inspiration tab, I clicked on browns and found this room;

It’s called Divine Recline in the event that the link doesn’t work. And it’s a nice mix between tan adn gray that I think would look beautiful with that quilt.
That’s my vote! :D
Hard to tell from the website swatches but maybe Behr Camel?
Wow. I am amazed in such a good way at the bunk bed paint job. Brilliant. LOVE LOVE LOVE.
In college, I had a friend who rented a house where every room in the house was a different color of ROYGBIV. It was so happy and wonderful to walk from room to room. The bunk bed painting reminded me of it! (And I have no suggestions for your room–I am someone who will always say “white” because I have no idea what looks good with what.)
Grey for sure! Silver screen from sherwin Williams is beautiful!
I have a quilt that my mom made Leo & I for our wedding. I didn’t really want my walls the same colour as the predominant colour in the quilt, so I painted all the walls a gentle cream colour, and then added a few horizontal stripes to one darker wall. The stripes were 4-5 different, complementary colours that were present in the quilt. It looks like this: http://flickr.com/gp/familyfoster/z1tD9r Maybe something like that would appeal to you?
I thought the lilac room was your room….ooops. The boys’ room looks great.
Everyone is saying go with a neutral color but… I’d paint that room a deep orange to match that quilt with the chocolate brown and green. Get an accent pillow in the same orange color and one or two more things that will “pop” with the wall color.
Can I just say I love the boys’ room with the different coloured paint for the bunk beds? What a great idea!
Paint it Swistle Blue, or rather Behr’s Ice Flower 520A-2.
L- It’s confusing, isn’t it? We keep having to call every room things like “The room that used to be our room but is now the computer room.” The other day Elizabeth was trying to find me, and I was saying “I’m in your OLD room!” and she was saying “Oh, I thought you were downstairs!” (I WAS) and heading for her NEW room. The lilac room is the room that used to be our room, but is now the computer room—but our bed is still in there so it’s still kind of our room, but SOON we’ll be in the room that used to be William and Henry’s room.
The Wall behind the bed would be great in that dark brown color – would give the illusion of a headboard and ground the bed. The other three walls in the palest green I see in the quilt.
I agree with people who said tan…I was going to say taupe! I never would have thought to pick this sort of color in the past, b ut I moved into a house that had different shades of tan/taupe in 2 rooms and it looks SO good. The pops of color come from the accessories in the room, in your case, the quilt and maybe the curtains? In the living room it would be the rug, couches, curtains, and/or a vase or picture frame on a mantel. The tan color really warms up the room and compliments the brighter colors so well. I feel like it looks sort of….mature??
I totally love the idea of painting the area behind the bunk-beds two distinctive colors. I imagined first being in one bed and then being in the other, and I think each boy will get his perfect wish in colors. How nice that all three colors of cool together!
I love that quilt!
I am incredibly impressed by how quickly you guys are getting these rooms done. Also, I never would have thought to paint the wall two different colors but it’s so awesome.
Different colors along the wall with the bunk beds= genius! It looks terrific!
I’ll third or fourth or whatever the folks who said paint your room yellow. It’s warm and a little different without being crazy hard to match. But also you really couldn’t go wrong with a cream color, either.
Do you have a Swistle blue room yet? I can’t remember but if not, I would say this room would be a great candidate for that.
The boys’ room looks fantastic. I am not a very good paint person but someone else might have mentioned Behr Toasted Wheat- I liked that one and there was another one called Wool Tweed (but it might not quite the right shade). I am more of a tan neutral than gray neutral…so fun watching your progress!! Your choices so far look fantastic :)
I would take the brown in your comforter and go lighter for the walls.
I am so totally impressed with how crisp and straight those lines are.
What about a lighter version of one of the colors in the quite. Like, the monochromatic look, but with more colors.
Does that makes sense?
