My mom thought I was kidding about this song/video existing. She thought I was just really gifted at coming up with mid-’80s social-awareness lyrics.

Oh, NO. Now I’m going to be singing it all day. Because, see, I first learned it when I was in elementary school, so it’s permanently lodged in my head. And I didn’t even watch the video, just read the title. Thanks for that.
And if you don’t mind singing it all WEEK, go to your Netflix account and queue up “We Are the World: The Story Behind the Song.” It’s unforgettable.
Man, did we love that song in the ’80’s. I still can sing each person’s lyrics in their voice.
I can’t even watch that video for fear I will never stop singing the song. Like Jen, I can sing along word-for-word and remember who sang what parts. The video is permanently part of my mental rolodex. And taking up valuable space, I might add.
Remember the episode of the Simpsons where they do a similar video to (somehow) try and get Bart out of the well?
“And the number one song in America, ‘I Do Believe We’re Naked,’ by Funky See Funky Do, replaces ‘We’re Sending Our Love Down the Well,’ which drops all the way down to number 99.”
Classic.
It comes to me that singers lip synch when they are being videotaped because they make such horrendous faces when they are really singing.
Also, for some reason this made me sad.
g~
For real?! How can anyone not remember We Are the World? It was the first of those big, collaborative fundraising things.
I would have totally taken credit for it. Like, “oh, yeah, I’m an 80’s aide song savant. no bigs.”
Your mom thought you were kidding? HOW? Sigh. I still really like the 80’s social awareness. AWESOME.
Me again. Holy crap, Kenny FREAKING Rogers! Skinny Billy Joel! Michael Jackson’s fancy socks!!! WILLIE NELSON. I forgot how awesome this was. Thanks for posting this!
For us Canadians, remember Tears Are Not Enough?
Hilarious, my word verification is “silly”.
And yes, all I am going to do today is comment on your blog. How about the part where Bob Dylan sings, but he is studiously reading the lyrics. Just in case he couldn’t remember, I guess.
I don’t need to watch the video- I have it ALL VERY CLEARLY imprinted in my head. Oh, man, I was so inspired by this, back in what? 4th grade?
Let’s do the Time Warp! We sung it in high school choir too.
At least I know what I’ll be doing the rest of the day now.
Wait, even my mother knows “We Are The World”. Heh.
This is replacing Lady Gaga as the song I can’t get out of my head. Yay.
I was due on July 20th, 1985. My mom was very pregnant on July 13th, 1985 and was watching that concert.
She went into labour the next morning, and I was born July 14th – about a week earlier than expected.
My ENTIRE LIFE, this song is The Song That Reminds My Mom About The Birth Of Her First Born.
Fortunately, it’s a beautiful and meaningful song! (Also, she was very excited over the 25th anniversary remake they did of it this year). I’ve always felt connected to “We Are the World”.
(And funnily enough, I’m in a career that involved educating and taking care of children; and I’m highly involved in committees in our school about helping others, being charitable, etc etc!).
I LOVED this song. LOVED it.
I loved this song! My first husband died that year, and we played the song at his funeral. It had all his favorite artists singing and really united people all over the world to help one another. Thank you for the memory Swistle!!
oh man i didn’t even hit play and this is STILL going to be stuck in my head. oh dear. now i want to start swaying at my desk.
