A fun thing happened today. I have been waiting and WAITING for Elizabeth to want to have her ears pierced so that I could make her wait until she turned 5, but her 5th birthday came and went and she’s been uninterested in earrings. But today we were at the mall and I saw a little girl getting her ears pierced and I said to Elizabeth, “Do you think you will ever want to get your ears pierced?” and she said “YES! When can I? Can it be TODAY?” I said I thought we should wait, mostly because I thought it would be fun to talk about it more, and also because I wanted to have my camera with me—but she was DETERMINED to have it done NOW. She is a lot like Rob, and both she and Rob tend to be good with decisions but if they wait too long they start thinking “Uhhhh…..” and not wanting to do it, so we talked for a few more minutes and then I brought her to a piercing kiosk and we DID IT.
It was SO FUN. There have been these MOMENTS in parenting when I think “This is FUN!”: buying baby clothes for a new baby, Rob losing his first tooth, etc., and this was another of those moments. I let her choose her own earrings, and she chose pink hearts. I chose a kiosk where I’ve seen two employees working together to pierce both ears simultaneously. I’d expected Elizabeth to shriek, because that is what she does if she ALMOST stubs a toe, but she said “Ouch” and that was it. They gave her a lollipop, and as we left the booth she said, “I’m lucky AND brave!”
This is SO FUN.
This story is adorable, and so is Elizabeth. So brave! And so big! Eek!
Wait. Those studs are CUTE. When did they start making adorable studs? She looks like she is having so much fun.
Lucy and I talked about it at great lenght and she was firmly in the ‘no’ camp until one day a few weeks before she turned 5, she decided it was THE day. So we went and it was so fun!! I was really surprised at the selection of earrings they have now instead of those ugly studs from when we were kids.

Isn’t that the worst when you want your kids to want something and they just don’t?
This is one of the reasons I would never get a baby’s ears pierced – I want that Moment when my girl decides she’s grown up enough to decide for herself.

Jen- RIGHT?? And there were tons of cute choices, including PINK JEWEL FLOWERS! I think when I got my ears pierced it was birthstones and gold studs and silver studs and the end.
SO CUTE! When I had my ears pierced it was with heart shaped gold studs, which were not even half as cute as those sweet pink ones! How very fun!

My daughter got the jeweled pink flower studs. I wish I could’ve had those instead of the super ugly ones I got!

My two-year-old niece is an adorable little girl. (I feel I *must* preface the story by saying this.) Before she was a year old, my brother and sister-in-law took her to have her ears pieced, ’cause they were tired of people calling her a boy. (Blind! Blind, I tell you!) They got her sparkly pink flower earrings. The next day, they took her to the store dressed in pink jammies and wrapped in a pink blanket, and someone came up to them and said, “Oh what a cute baby boy!” ARRRGH!

my mom made me wait until i was THIRTEEN, and it was SO MEAN and unfair at the time :) and my only choices were enormous gold balls or enormous silver balls. those are SO much cuter! i love how much fun you both had! :)
Ha, I scrolled down to say that my parents made me wait until I was 13 and then I see Alice said the same thing. Unlike Alice, I was totally fine with and I’ll probably do the same with my daughter. Cause I want her to suffer with the strict parents the way I suffered.
I also couldn’t wear make-up until high school. Or date until 15. And had a curfew of 11. Seriously, strictest parents ever.
How did I get here? Anyway, your daughter is adorable and brave and lucky and all good things.
Awesome! I got mine pierced at 7 and still remember the day like it was yesterday. We didn’t have cool pink hearts to choose from though!

Aw, I love this story. Addy hasn’t said anything about it to us yet, so I guess I don’t want to bug her about it, but I do think it’d be cute. Although, I remember as a kid letting mine get all infected and gross and having to let them grow together and then get them repierced when I was sixteen, so there is that downside of doing it young…

I took my daughter at 5, and she promptly changed her mind. She asked me to do it first, and so I got some additional holes, and she again refused. Her 6th birthday was the charm, though.
Awwww…. Sweet. My daughter’s big present for her birthday next month is pierced ears. The excitement is PALPABLE.

My dad was really strict and said I would have to wait until I was 16. I started getting really antsy for it around 8 or 10 probably and so when he said 16 it was met with much weeping and wailing and rending of garments. My mother has never had her ears pierced, so that wasn’t really helping my case. Then for some reason, and I still don’t know why, because he hardly ever changed his mind, he caved and said 13. I got a second set of holes pierced when I was 18.
If I ever have a daughter (IF) I think probably 12-13 is a good age. (Also, proclaiming something drastic, like 16 or 18, and then backing down by a few years can make you seem like the Best Parent Ever. Handy strategy.)
