More Kitten-Naming, and a Cat Cold

Over on the review blog I have a 12-week thing going on where each week someone will get a $100 Visa gift card. Part of my agreement is that I’ll mention it each week on this blog. So bless you, you’re going to get to hear about it and hear about it and hear about it! But: there are 24 reviewers doing it, and each of us is giving away $100 per week for 12 weeks, so possibly this will be worth it for 288 of you. (The rest of you will be extra irritated.) The first of the twelve posts is up, and it’s about the morning breakfast routine, so that’s the kind of comment you leave, and it’s what I wrote about, and there is a picture of the kitten trying to attack Arthur on television.

Kitten-naming continues. I chose Maggie, but it turned out the children hated that name (I associate the name with Maggie Smith, but they associate it with Maggie and the Ferocious Beast). Then I decided on Phoebe, even though it totally breaks my kitten-naming rules, but no one else wanted to use it.

Then Edward suggested Hungary, which he found in the boy name section of the baby name book (as the country of origin, but he didn’t know that), and I said, “But that’s a boy name” and he said “Yes, and she’s a boy,” so I think we are going to need to revisit some conversations. But anyway then he looked in the girl-name section and he found the name Dexter, so I think I need to give him a different baby name book.

Her tail is very long and plumey, so I idly looked up “plume” and found that a plumed hat is called a bonnet, and I thought Bonnet was a PERFECT name for her: name-LIKE but not a name; connected to her appearance but not in an obvious way. Now I have to strong-arm everyone else into agreeing. I’ve already sent Paul several emails at work saying “Bonnet. BONNET. Bonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. Et.”

Mouse has caught the kitten’s cold, but she has it much worse. I think she’s probably going to have to go to the vet, but I’ve never had to bring a cat to the doctor for a cold so I’m not sure what the “calling point” is. I hate to spend $50 to hear, “Yep, it’s a cold all right.”

Aww, I had a cat named Phoebe! But she was kind of dumb, so it morphed into Feeble, as in ‘feeble-minded’. But she was sweet. She liked to eat pretzels.

But Bonnet! Is cute! And possible nicknames are cute too.

I like Bonnet too! Just NAME her that and everyone else will be forced to concede.

When I was in kindergarten my friend and I were convinced that this boy in our class was actually a girl because he had longish (chin-length, if I recall correctly) hair. We used to spend vast amounts of time trying to convince him to pull down his pants to prove that he was a boy since he always said that he was. He never did it, but at some point we did figure out that he really was a boy. Point being, I don’t think Edward is alone in this type of confusion at this point in his life.

We had a female cat named Dexter (came that way from shelter). We thought it was odd at first, but it fit her…

When I was a kid we had a cat named Maxine, who turned out to be Max. Then later we had a cat named Missy, who turned out to be Mr Missy. For some reason my parents had a hard time interpreting cat parts. But I like Bonnet. Bonnet is cool. Although I’d probably end up calling her Bonnie.

I really like Bonnet. Just start calling her that and I’m sure the others will follow suit.

As to the kitty cold, so long as she’s eating/drinking and going to the bathroom, I wouldn’t worry about it for a few days. My cat became terribly sick with an upper respiratory infection when we first got him, but since he was freaked out and already not eating or drinking, the cold thing made it impossible. He ended up at the vets getting IV fluids. I would probably take her on Friday if things aren’t looking up, just to avoid an emergency vet (and a lot more dollars being spent) over the weekend. Good luck!

I took my cat to the vet with a cold, feeling very silly and thinking they wouldn’t be able to do anything for me. In fact, they said that it was good that I brought him in, and gave him a huge dose of fluids. They injected it just between his shoulder blades and it formed a pocket of fluid that would be absorbed over the next day or two. They said it was similar to an IV for humans.

Your cat probably has a upper respitory infection is one eye more closed than the other? I’ve this with 2 shelter cats. One got eye drops and we had to take him into a steaming hot bathroom wrapped in towel so he wouldn’t scratch the crap outta us and the other cat got to have the cold run it’s course. Maybe use the steaming bathroom as a home remedy to see if it helps. You run the shower to get the bathroom all hot then take him in. I reccomend turning off the shower when you take the cat in. Maje sure he is held chest or counter height so he gets the benefit of the steam. Give him 5-10 minutes.

I still like Cleo. You can go either way with it.

Plus, when she snuggles up with Benchley, you’ll have alliteration, as in “Oh, don’t Benchley and Bonnet look adorable!” Not to leave out Mouse, but you said she’s not interested in cat cuddles.

I have a cat named Maggie…and she is a very bad kitty. Adorable, but bad. She was named, many moons ago, for Maggie Estep.

I like Bonnet. But if you’re going with the “is it a girl? is it a boy? feather boa” theme, you could always name her RuPaul… ;)
