The winner of the box of misc. Valentine’s stuff is The Princess of Quite a Lot! Email me, sweet girl, and I will get this stuff on its way to you. Swistle! at! gmaildotcom!
Elizabeth’s hair is driving me batty. It is SO flyaway, and then she leaps around and rubs her head on the couch so she gets this NEST OF IMPOSSIBLE on her head. I try putting it in barrettes or ponytails, but her hair is so fine even the extra-grippy-for-fine-hair barrettes come right out—or worse, half out, so her hair is flyaway AND has things caught in it. I’ve tried detangling sprays and anti-frizz conditioners, but either they don’t work or they make her hair feel like there’s chalk dust in it.
Henry threw up last night. And before that, he and I and Elizabeth and Edward all shared a straw at Burger King. So. But what I’m HOPING, since there have been no further Incidents since last night, is that like Elizabeth he barfs when he has a fever (he had a fever last night) and it doesn’t necessarily mean anything about a stomach virus.
Today I am in the mood for TREATS. I am having hazelnut-creamered coffee and Nutella’d bread right now, and I’m thinking of pizza for lunch. Then perhaps I’ll bake cookies. YES I am on the reminder week of the Pill, WHY DO YOU ASK.
I bought the most. beautiful. dishes at Target. So, so beautiful. Here are my breakfast dishes, before I added the Nutella bread:
Furthermore, they were 75% off. I liked them at full price, when they were $60 for 4 place settings. I wavered at half-price, and even went back a second time to waver some more. But when they were $14.98 they went home with me. I lovvvvvvvvvve them.
How you have the self control to WAIT until the OMG OMG pretty thing you want is on 75% off sale I’ll never know… aren’t you afraid that one day it will be just GONE?
So pretty! And so satisfying as well to have gotten them for such a good deal! Well done.
Superjules- Oh YES, I DO quake with fear on that one! Because there have been times I’ve missed something and then thought “I could have gotten that at 50% or 30% or full-price, WHY OH WHY DIDN’T I?” The dishes were easier because I already have too many dishes, and also because I didn’t realize how much more I’d love them once I had them out of the box.
Oh, no! They are beautiful! I wish my Target carried those dishes!
Those dishes are BEAUTIFUL!! I’m jealous. We are using…my PARENTS’ wedding pattern dishes. The parental units got new dishes around the time I went to college, so I inherrited their wedding pattern dishes from 1975, which Wife and I are still using today. Oh, hey, google images has them: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/images/uploads/09.27.corelle.jpg
That. Those are our dishes. Think I need to go shopping?
I love those dishes! They look like the fine china that I desperately want, they were on clearance at my store but there weren’t any on the floor. I am sooo jealous!
Love those dishes.
The dishes are beautiful! They remind me some crib bedding I saw the other day while I was scoping out to make sure someday we’ll be able to find bedding that fits the paint color of the room. Of course the bedding isn’t as beautiful as the plates, but it is Swistle blue with birds, so, you know: http://www.walmart.com/ip/MiGi-Little-Tree-4-Piece-Crib-Bedding-Set/13032684
Raven- Is Lenox Chirp the fine china you want? I DIE for Lenox Chirp.
I am drinking coffee with hazelnut creamer in my Formerly Known as the Mother-in-Law Mug. It’s my favorite.
Very pretty! Now, my sister-in-law works at Target, so if I see something I really *really* want, I wait until it’s marked down, then give her the money, so she can get her employee discount, too.
Oh those are so pretty! I almost said “they are pretty enough to hang on the wall as art” an then I thought OMG I’m turning into a little old lady.
But they are.
Dishes like those would really cheer me up on gray winter days like today. Beautiful!
I love how you’re like, “Oh, Henry just barfs when he has a fever.” I look forward to being more accustomed to fevers! Right now when the baby has one it makes me so anxious I can hardly think straight.
Also, those are REALLY pretty dishes.
Oh man, I love those! Hope the rest of you escape the barfies!
I love that plate. My husband let me choose when we replaced our crockery last month, and now instead of plain plates we have ones with lovely floral patterns on that make me happy every time I use them.
Also Jess that cot bedding is just gorgeous! Love the little birdies.
As a little girl I had the hair I believe you are describing with Elizabeth (like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/grace134/3378320016/ or http://www.flickr.com/photos/grace134/3254496649/)
Anyways, sad news! I had a tangled ball of sensitive hair that made me scream when anyone tried to brush or deal with it and came out of everything clip or tie-like, and generally was a pain to deal with until….well until I started dealing with my own hair, I guess.
I love your new dishes! So beautiful and so ‘Swistle’. Lovely! That’s pretty awesome of a price too, wow! You always seem to have good finds!
My littlist brother pukes whenever he has a fever or when he’s getting a throat infection (I guess because of swelling)… so not only for a ‘stomach bug’ either, I hope that’s also Henry’s case!
I just wanted to pipe in that I’m on that reminder week of pills, too, and I am therefore also in the mood for treats. Indulge away! :)
Lovely plates, by the way–I bet they make the treats that much more enjoyable!
I would love to start my day with breakfast dishes like that and I would pat myself on the back for getting them at 75% off. (I would also like to start the day with Nutella bread…)
Love your dishes! And thank you for reminding me of another reason why I should never regret not having a girl. I would not want to have to deal with girl hair.
I am so inspired by your bargain-hunting (nay bargain-DEMANDING) at Target because I never ever EVER see anything on the clearance endcappy areas that I am interested in. WHAT. IS. UP.
Those are lovely dishes. Keep them well away from the children.
I have two girls with ultra-fine hair (yay me) – the ONLY thing that works are tiny ponytail holders…..for the 3yo, you can buy a box of tiny “ouchless” elastics at Wal-Mart – look in the baby/toddler section – there will be a display of accessory-type stuff (hairbows, etc) – and they will be there – in a pillbox type container (like the 7-day medicine organizers)……For the 7yo, we have graduated to their smaller ponytail holders (they are the bands that are covered/wrapped in thread) – they will have them either at the same baby display, or over in the bigger girls clothing, a similar rack with bigger girls accessories/hair stuff……My plan of attack is to use the tangle spray to smooth it out & get their hair a little damp, then pull it up in the desired style, and then put a bow, etc on top…..its the ONLY thing that works!!!!
Good luck – I know its maddening!!!!
I luvvvveee Nutella.
The plate set is SO cute and I am in such awe (and a little JELUS) of your ability to find such amazing Target sales!!
those dishes are AWESOME. great find!
Those dishes are adorable!
Have you used Dove product before for flyaway fine hair? I used it on my girls and thought it worked pretty good, and smelled nice. I ran out and it was old, so I have no idea if it’s out there any longer.
Here’s one that kinda looks similar, although I don’t think the name was the same…cause my girls weren’t frizzy, just WAY static, all the time.

Sweet dishes. :)
I love those dishes. Also, some of my best days are the days when I use the Fomerly Known as Mother in Law Mug. LOVE IT!
That has got to be the best deal I’ve ever seen from Target. AWESOME find!
Those dishes are so pretty! Love them! My dishes are hand-me-downs from a former co-worker (when I was just out of college with my first apartment). They are white with a blue border, have a duck in the middle and say “Country” across the duck. They could be uglier, I guess, but I’m not sure how. And I’ve never broken a single one. Of course.
I am going to target right now to buy both dishes and nutella-yum on both counts.
I had hair like that as a kid, and still do, really. My mom just cut my hair really short until I was able to take care of it myself. Even now I keep it fairly short because I still get nests in the back when it’s longer.
I totally talked myself out of buying those dishes at Target! They were 50% off, and they do so resemble the Lenox Chirp that I adore, but cannot really afford. (only have 2 place settings). Anyway, I went through a “I’m not buying one thing in January that I don’t need” phase, and now of course I am so regretting it!
I LOVE THE WAY YOU SHOP!
This might not help with the “nests” in the hair, but to help my daughter’s hair stop getting so crazy flyaway static-y, I keep a dryer sheet handy and rub it on her head occassionally. It helps it stay down even better than barrettes. for what it’s worth…
Another thing you might want to try for Elizabeth’s hair is Biosilk Silk Therapy. It’s a clear oily stuff, if you rub just a tiny drop between your hands and then on her hair it will make it easy to comb and will handle the flyaways. It’s easy to balk because a tiny bottle is like $15 or something ridiculous like that, but I have that same kind of hair and have only used an inch out of the bottle in six months. Plus it smells good and if you get too much in your hand it will make your skin feel awesome. Just don’t put any more than a tiny drop on her head or it will look like you combed her hair with a pork chop.
Vomiting bugs are usually contagious after vomiting starts, not necessarily before.
hope everyone stays healthy!
Pretty! And now I need to go make myself some toast with Nutella! (My dishes are boring and white from Ikea, though)
Those are LOVELY! I am drinking some hazelnut creamered coffee as I type, but it is out of a big ‘ol ugly mug. And I have sworn off Nutella for the time being since I was going through a jar a week on my own :(
Hope Henry feels better and the other kids (and you) stay healthy!
The dishes are very pretty: even nicer than the Chirp pattern, I think! I can’t wait to get new dishes: I have a four place settings of 3 different patterns and it drives me batty if I don’t have enough of the same type to serve a meal.
I have baby fine flyaway hair and so does my daughter. A couple things I’ve learned over the years: if you put some hand lotion on your hands and rub it *almost* all the way in and then run your barely lotion-y hands over her hair from her part down to the ends, it will tame the flyaways. We also put conditioner in her hair every time we wash it and leave it in for a few minutes before rinsing it out. And for special occasions when I really want her hair to look pretty, I’ll spend 5 minutes curling the ends under with a curling iron. (I wrap a towel around her shoulders so she won’t complain about the hot hair touching her neck.) While the curl is nice, the real benefit is that the heat seems to seal the hair’s cuticle and it will stay looking nice for another day or two until I wash it again. Also, we’ve had the most success with teeny tiny hair bands and the kind of barrettes that you snap back and forth to open and close them. To keep slippy barrettes from coming out, spray one concentrated squirt of hairspray directly under the barrette. I know it sounds weird to use hairspray on a small child, but it does work! (On school picture day, the only way to keep her hair looking decent between the time she leaves for school and the time the photographer snaps her picture is a virtual mushroom cloud of hairspray!)
Man, it is a good thing that we have no nutella in the house. Weaning hormones are kicking my ass right now and I have no doubt that I would be sitting on the floor sobbing and eating the whole jar with a spoon and feeling even worse because the baby would be crying and reaching because she must eat everything I eat which would make me cry harder…
Good job on the dishes! I would love dishes like that.
I didn’t have Nutella until I studied abroad in Paris during college. My host family had it and I used to sneak a spoonful every day, always feigning ignorance when my host mother would express astonishment at the dwindling supply. Even now, years later, Nutella still tastes a little bit of guilt. I think that might make it even tastier, though.
Headbands are the solution for my little girl’s thin, flyaway hair. They’ve kind of become her trademark look. She won’t tolerate barrettes or ponytails though they’d probably stay in now that her hair is not as thin as it was (she’s 5 now). We like California Baby calming hair conditioner after shampoo and the CB hair de-tangler when she has knots in dry hair and to calm flyaways. Also, I try to keep her hair between chin and shoulder length. It looks better on the shorter side of that range, but we tend to wait a while for haircuts.
