The kids are still asleep and I hope they sleep a long time more. I’m not looking forward to seeing them today, I’m just not.
I have to take all five of them to a doctor’s appointment for one of them. I hate doing that.
Recent excellent 75%-off Target finds: fingerless gloves, earmuffs, Yes to Carrots lip balms/glosses, children’s sweaters, a pair of children’s winter boots, children’s sleepers, children’s glittery shoes. Recent excellent 50%-off Target finds: Nick & Nora children’s pajamas, children’s unders and socks, a hooded flannel shirt Rob has been pining for, picture frames I then actually put pictures in and hung on the actual wall, a baby blanket with hedgehogs on it, several boxes of granola bars for lunchbox snacks.
Last night’s dreams involved rooming with Jenn (we had a full bakery kitchen in our apartment, baker included, and neighbors spontaneously dropped in for huge potluck parties while we were trying to get ready in the morning), petting Georgie and Oliver which was upsetting and nice because I knew they were dead but here they were alive, and various Travel Fret scenarios (late for my flight! forgot to check in! no seats left on the plane!).
Mouse, our remaining cat, acts hungry but isn’t eating much. I Googled it like an idiot.
I’m switching to herbal tea in the mornings, in case the coffee is messing up my dreams. Also, I think the coffee might be to blame for how cranky I get mid-afternoon.
Parking at Home is having a giveaway to help alleviate a winter funk. Cute crocheted hats are involved.
I’m making another hotpad. This one is a little larger, possibly too much larger. Both strands are cotton, one a pink/white color change and the other a yellow/white color change.
There was a sale at the craft store and I bought more yarn than we can ever use. This is in addition to the yarn we already had at home, which was more than we could ever use. Rob asked me what my favorite part of knitting was, and I said “Buying yarn.”
I’m finally watching The L Word: I like a series to be over before I try it so I can watch it straight through on DVD. That’s a tricky show to watch with kids in the house—as has been the case with every Showtime/HBO series I’ve watched. It’s like they think the ABILITY to include swearing and nudity is a MANDATE to include it. It reminds me of college plays I went to (and I went to all of them because my boyfriend was a theater guy and sometimes had a 2-second appearance on stage—or even, once, A LINE): every single play involved the characters (1) smoking cigarettes and (2) firing the loud fake gun. WE HAVE THE ABILITY, THEREFORE WE MUST USE IT.
You musn’t blame our sweet friend, coffee. Coffee is our friend.
I love how honest you are about buying the yarn being your favorite part. My favorite part of any project is buying the supplies. If the project doesn’t end up happening at least I had a great time buying the supplies.
“Rob asked me what my favorite part of knitting was, and I said “Buying yarn.”
-That is the mark of a true knitter. Welcome to the club!
I hate taking all my kids to the ped for one’s appointment. I tried to take just my 18 month old to my baby’s four month appointment and it was a HOT MESS, the older one kept screaming and screaming whenever anyone came in the room, which made the baby cry, ugh. Also, I went to theater school and you are spot on about those plays.
God, I wish I could go Target shopping with you! I rarely find the great deals you find.
I’m surprised your boyfriend didn’t always have major parts. Our theatre (<--Look! Snobby spelling!) department had so few guys that the same three were leads in every play.
Well, Swistle, it just means that you’re a yarn-o-holic. As a fabric-o-holic I can empathize. I have an entire walk-in closet filled with odds and ends and fabric. Lots and lots of fabric. And I didn’t even buy a big chunk of it. People find out that I sew and they give me fabric and patterns. I guess I’m now a pattern junkie, too, because I have more patterns than I’ll ever use. I just used to have a medium-ish bin and a cardboard box, but that was before I was given six kitchen trash bags full of sewing patterns….
Oh, I liked The L Word! But I haven’t seen the full series. I should work on that.
Don’t forget the gratuitous nudity in the college plays (or perhaps this was just the drama department at my college?). Seriously. Everything was an excuse to show your ass because THAT meant you were a SERIOUS AC-TOR.
We have no Target in Vermont, so I live vicariously through your Target deals. Amazing!
Also, LURVE the L Word. So sorry it’s over…
Oh, the doctor’s office with five children. I so feel for you. UGH.
I will tell you what I tell everyone who claims to have more yarn than they can use: send it to me.
dude. if you had a bakery in your house you can be SURE i’d be stopping by all the time, too. those are just *smart* neighbors. :-)
My favorite part of knitting is unquestionably the yarn buyin part of it. Second to that is when I have my s**t together enough to be a part of knitting groups. Then there’s the social/gossip/coffee part.
Okay fine. I like the knitting part too.
Buying yarn is DEFINITELY the best part of knitting. It’s totally addictive. My mom’s local yarn shop is arranged by color, so you walk in and you’re surrounded by a rainbow. Soooo pretty!
Yes, one of the reasons I’d love to learn to knit is just to buy yarn! How fun!
Also, my Target has a disappointing clearance section this year. I need to check out some of the neighboring ones I suppose. Does yours have that bulk section in the back? I did have some fun back THERE on Sunday.
Finally- bless you for taking all 5 to the doctor at once. Let us know if you come back alive.
Ah, the L Word. I watched the first season and liked it, but never managed to get back into it for any other season. I kept up with it via Wife, who owns all seasons, and WOW is it fun to make fun of in later seasons.
One of my cats died nearly 3 years ago and I still have dreams that she shows up in. Unfortunately, she usually shows up looking like a corpse.
I completely agree about yarn buying. It really is THE most fun activity! I know the people at my local Michaels think I’m insane, since I just walk back and forth, back and forth…I also love the conversations you end up having with OTHER people amassing yarn. That’s always fun. Unless they’re trying to buy all the yarn YOU want…so far that hasn’t happened!
I hate to sound like the crazy cat advice giver, but here I go:
One of our cats (both old and persnickity) was acting very strange and like he was hungry but not eating. Took him to the vet, turns out he was dehydrated. Cats apparently don’t like to drink the same place they eat. Moved the water bowl to another room, drinking commenced-strange behavior went away.
Other cat will eat one kind of food for awhile, but then suddenly decide he doesn’t like it and won’t eat. Switch foods, he starts eating again. When objections begin to new food, we return to old food. Actually have 3 foods in rotation. Sound high maintence but isn’t too hard.
I have the yarn thing, but with pens and notebooks. We will be in the future, using mental energy to beam thoughts onto plasma tablets and I will still be toting around pens and notebooks that are in my house today.
I do use them, just not at the rate at which I buy them…
I think you just identified the #1 reason anyone enjoys any hobby: buying the supplies. I mean really: the scrappers and their paper; the sewers and their fabric; the knitters/crocheters and their yarn. You are BRILLIANT. And also totally normal.
I have far too much of all of the above to rightfully ever use all of it. And yet I still go to the craft store. And I still buy the stuff.
I found myself contemplating a 75% Target find the other day: some kind of boy’s version of the mom’s purse, i.e. some kind of man-bag with a wooden razor, a pretend can of shaving cream, some fake mustaches… WAIT. In the process of writing this overly-long pointless comment I just figured it out. IT WAS A PRETEND SHAVING KIT.
Sheesh.
You’re back. You were gone for a couple days. I know that totally sounds like something a stalker would say. Creepy! Sorry! I check in daily so it’s good to see you back.
Do you remember off hand what company makes the hedgehog baby blanket? Target online has more than 600 (none of which have “hedgehog” as a keyword), and I don’t really want to hunt through them all.
Wow, I wish I had gone to your school for theater. I was a theater major in college and the edgiest thing we ever did was Noises Off.
Also, as much as I like knitting and crochet, I think that my favorite part is also the shopping for the yarn! Perhaps that is because I pretty much only make scarves. (They’re easy)
Kristi- I think you’re right. Drinking tea didn’t help, and now I have to go apologize to coffee for unfairly blaming it.
Party of 5- I know! I was surprised when I saw how long it had been. I sometimes compose posts mentally, and I think I briefly forgot I had to also type them out and post them.
Leslie- It’s from their Dwell line. I looked online but I don’t see the hedgehog blankie. I went to Target again last night and looked for it (I love it so much I want to give them as gifts) and none left. They had TONS of the girl blankets and clothing from that line (butterflies, I think), but NONE of the boy stuff (the hedgehogs). I’m thinking of going out today to another, farther Target to see if THEY have any left.
Erin- Ha! Our theater group did Noises Off too! (Several of the characters were smokers, as interpreted by our theater group.)
Oooh! I am so flattered to get to be in your dream, especially happening so close to your L-Word viewing PLEAZUUURE. Oooh la la. You would like a taste of my cupcakes, yes? Ah, mais oui! I share!
My word verification (can’t make this stuff up): FUCTOU.
Is it odd to just love touching the yarn and not buying it? How about standing in a yarn/knitting store and just being overwhelmed by the beauty of it all? The colors. The possibilities. Ah, I love it.
I second wanting to shop with you at Target. I just can’t seen to find the deals you do.
I do the watching the whole series after it’s over thing too. I had a love/hate thing with The L Word. I got hooked and watched all of it, but the show sometimes just uh, tries too hard or something and you want to smack people. But it was entertaining, had plenty of sexxay scenes and lots of drama. Oh, and I’m not sure when they added it (maybe season 2?), but please note the cringifying intro theme song – SO. BAD. Crap, it’s in my head now.
LOL @ the college b/f. My husband and I still make jokes about his ex who used to drag him to plays to see her perform “Sad girl #2,” and other such knock out roles. *laughs*
