You know what is surprisingly similar to going through the Dunkin’ Donuts drive-through and getting a flavored coffee and two doughnuts? Having coffee with flavored creamer and two slices of bread with Nutella. It SOUNDS like a sad sorry substitute, but it doesn’t FEEL that way, and I can’t believe how similar Nutella-bread is to doughnuts (Elizabeth, sniffing my breakfast: “I know that smell! It’s DOUGHNUTS!!”).
The initial investment is larger (I paid $6 for a bag of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee grounds, $3 for a jar of Nutella, and $3.50 for a thing of flavored coffee creamer, all at Target), but the ingredients last for many servings and it’s easier to go back for second helpings without the drive-through girl saying “Back again so soon?” in a tone that’s hard to put a finger on but isn’t quite nice. Plus: no children in the back seats begging for doughnuts, no trying to figure out how to order the amount of cream and sugar I like (“Last time I said regular? and that was a little too much. So could I have, like, 75% of regular?”), and no using up a paper bag, a paper doughnut-grabber, several paper napkins, and a paper cup (I am practically NURSING BABY SEALS BACK TO HEALTH AND HAPPINESS by staying home).
I think I’ll start doing some of the cleaning updates on Twitter. I get so excited to tell you all the latest, but when I went down to the pantry for a new thing of coffee creamer this morning, and I threw away the fat-free kind I bought 2-3 years ago and rarely use and the huge tub of unflavored kind Paul got me by mistake that I kept thinking I might mix with Nesquik or something but never did, I wasn’t sure my excitement over those two little pitch-outs was worth, like, a POST. Though I see that didn’t stop me from posting two paragraphs about my breakfast.
Dude. This is ridiculous. You’re posting about things you’ve thrown away and how you are saving the planet one napkin at a time (plus a few bucks) and I’m not kidding – I’m riveted. What’s wrong with us??
I’m riveted, too!
Also, what kind of bread? White? Wheat? What?
I cleaned the bedroom today. You have shamed me. Fresh sheets, dusting, vacuum, everything. I even pitched a pair of winter boots that were serviceable but ugly.
Might I suggest a spoonful of Nutella and a banana? Take a bit of Nutella and a bite of banana in each mouthful. That and flavored coffee was my breakfast this morning.
Also, do you know of fluffernutter sandwiches? Peanut butter and marshmallow fluff. Anyway, try one with Nutella instead of peanut butter. Hole. Lee. Shit. It’s AWESOME.
My love for Nutella knows no bounds. NO BOUNDS, I tell you.
i’m sure it’s much cheaper in the long run. and it’s not a sorry substitute at all! plus, baby seals and rain forests are being saved! but my question is: do you toast your bread?
I’m doubting your breakfasty goodness but I have no real reason to doubt anything Swistle so I should just keep my trap shut. If you sing it I shall say “Amen”.
I would welcome your tweets as I need inspiration. Small victories are my kind of thing!
I have yet to try Nutella, although I’m thinking I definitely should.
Torsten LOVES Nutella. So we’ve started buying it at Costco. They sell double packs of ENORMOUS jars for like $8.
I’m afraid to try Nutella. I have no shortage of foodly addictions, and even one more might crowd out actual living from my day.
WTG on the pitching of crap.
I also got to thinking that your MIL is not really going to KNOW if something is lowfat or low sodium enough for whatever her demons are. I suggest the time-honored technique of LYING. I know I was all about the accomodation of this “easy to fit in” houseguest, but my sinuses throb today and I’m over it. Just use what you use, through away packages before she can read them, don’t let her see you use a salt shaker on the communal pot, and let the chips fall. I guarantee you she orders off a menu without anybody wringing their hands in fear that they have compromised her dietary manifesto so why should you. I mean really!
I remain riveted by ANYTHING you write about, although I am not sure if it’s because you are so fascinating or because I am SO pathetic. Let’s go with you = fascinating.
Also avoided: nerve-shredding drive-thru service and very real possibility that you will be handed SOMEONE ELSE’S coffee order.
This is the part where I admit that I…do not know what Nutella is made of. Is it nut butter? Chocolate?
If there is a jar of Nutella within, say, 4 yards of me, I will spread it on anything that doesn’t move.
I love to put it on lightly toasted waffles though. MMMMM
Nowheymama- I used 100% whole wheat, but I think white would be even tastier. Whole wheat, though, feels righteous, and what’s weird is that it doesn’t seem like whole wheat with the Nutella on it.
Beyond- I’ve tried it toasted and untoasted. I think untoasted is more like a doughnut, but toasted is yummy too because it melts the Nutellammmmmmmmmmmm.
Tess- It is hazelnut butter flavored with cocoa. It tastes like the filling of those Ferraro Rocher hazelnut chocolates (gold-foil wrapped balls) and in fact it is made by Ferraro so it probably IS the same stuff.
I hear Nutella is totally awesome. In Sandra Lee’s last magazine, she had a recipe wherein she took a croissant and put a piece of white chocolate and some nutella in it. Then she wrapped it in foil and heated it in the oven. It looked soooooo good. I’ll have to remember to get some nutella.
Oh, Nutella. Martin LOVES IT. Hazelnut+Chocolate seems to be a big favourite of Polish folks.
Do keep posting your cleaning updates, they really do inspire me (as you read yesterday). I’m still plugging away at my room (since I worked way too slowly yeseterday and then went for a swim, lol)… just coming by here and reading this reminded me to get back to it!
No nutella for us, which my waist thinks might be a good thing, but I’m also loving your cleaning updates and say post away!
Mmmmmmm. Nutella. Food for the GODS.
And you know, I saw a COMMERCIAL on TV for Nutella recently. It was so splendidly AWESOME because they were touting it as a health food. SRSLY! “Hazelnuts and skim milk with a dash of flavanoids-rich cocoa…”
Add it to multigrain toast & you’re practically a POSTER CHILD for glowing health.
Oh, Nutella . . . my love!
You know what, if YOU’RE proud of your cleaning and tossing feats for the day (small tho they may be), then it’s worth posting. You have to start somewhere, and now I’m inspired to go toss two little things too. Baby steps, ripple effects!
I’ve always been strangely wary of The Nutella. Probably because most mystery spread substances are best left on the grocery store shelf. HOWEVER, I am no feeling very tempted, given everyone’s LOVE for it. I mean, with Swistle you just can’t go wrong.
Whimsy- I had NEVER TRIED IT because I am the same way about Mystery Spreads. It seemed like one of those weird food things like clamato juice, where you wonder (but don’t really want to know) who buys it. After I finally bought some, I was creeped out and had trouble tasting it. But now I am on my third, or possibly fourth, jar.
I would commit murder for some Nutella right now.
Oh yum. Brilliant.
Off to buy Nutella…
Dunkin Donuts does have great coffee. Curious about Nutella… have never tried it and wonder if it would meet the standards of my super picky four-year-old. I love your blog and enjoy reading about your breakfast as much as I do anything else you write.
“nursing baby seals back to health and happiness” = brilliance!
Swistle! They are remodeling the TARGET near me. To include PRODUCE AND SUCH. I am beyond excited since I had been driving further out to get those things!
Also cute little Turkey and Pilgrim hats for the kids in the dollar section.
I don’t have nutella but have heard good things about it…
I like sunbutter. We are a nut free tree nut free house since my son has severe food allergies.
Don’t restrict all of your cleaning updates to Twitter! I find your posts very encouraging.
I for one am going to have to protest the moving of the cleaning updates to Twitter, where I am likely to miss them. I found myself purging the contents of my bathroom drawer last night, ALL BECAUSE OF YOU!
Also, I’m so glad that all of my other questions about the Nutella bread have already been asked and answered (toasted or not, white or wheat, taste, etc.) I’ve never had Nutella, but have found myself craving a donut ever since reading this post this morning, so this is a recipe I NEED.
You are a saint, saving all those baby seals. I think you neglected to mention the rain forests, too. Don’t shy away from the spotlight, woman!
Oh, Nutella. One of the reasons I fell in love with living in Europe, back in the dark ages of the 90s when it was practically impossible to find in the states. It’s delicious on whole-grain bread, making a sorta nutritious breakfast, but on hot toast it’s heavenly. Also, you can use it in a pinch to frost a warm tray of brownies or peanut butter bars.
Laughing about the reference to Ferrero Rocher – everytime my husband eats a FR, he says, hmm, I think they use Nutella for the filling. Every. single. time.
You know what’s good? Nutella and Havarti sandwich. I know. I know, but it’s TRUE. The cheese is not over-powering and just takes the edge off the sweet a tad and makes it perfect. I love them. Of course you have to make sure it’s PLAIN Havarti and not DILL Havarti.
Also tasty, Nutella stuffed crescent rolls.
Nutella is on my grocery list for tonight and Nutella on toast will most definately be my breakfast in the morning. If I can wait that long!
Nutella in crepes with thin slices of strawberries for breakfast is my favorite! My son’s is the same except strawberries are eaten separately. LOL
Just wanted to add a recipe for Nutella that is to die for! It’s not exactly low-calorie, but an excellent “some-time” treat:
Strawberry-Nutella Panini
* 1/4 cup chocolate hazelnut spread (Nutella)
* 12 slices poundcake (appx. 1/2 inch thick)
* 6 fresh strawberries, hulled and very thinly sliced
* butter-flavored cooking spray
Directions
1.Heat a panini grill to medium according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
2.Spread the chocolate-hazelnut spread over 1 side of all of the pound cake slices. Arrange the sliced strawberries over 6 cake slices. Cover with the remaining cake slices, chocolate side down.
3. Spray panini grill with nonstick spray and grill each panino until the pound cake is crisp and golden and the fillings are warm, about 2 minutes. Cut each panino in half and serve.
Came by from Mama Bub, cos she said you were a genius! Haha! I love Nutella! I have to stop myself from eating it every morning, but it’s tough man, tough… with that big bottle staring down at me from the table…
:) Haha! Thanks for relighting my Nutella fervour.
