Impending Haircut

I’m getting my hair cut today. I don’t know why I always get hand-wringy about it and spend so much time mentally rehearsing what I’ll ask for: not only does my stylist ALWAYS give me a cut I like, but I ALWAYS get pretty much the same thing. There is no need to post a photo of my haircut, because it is just “the same as the last time I posted a photo of myself with a new haircut.” I get it cut as short as it can be without going above the hairline, and I tuck it behind my ears, and I like for it to have potentially flippy ends. She always asks me questions as we go along, and I always say, “Uhhhhhhh….” and then she says, “Why don’t we….?” and I leap on her suggestion with relief.

The only thing I would change about my stylist is that I wish she were more CHATTY. I like the kind of stylist where I can sit back and say, “Oh!” and “Really!” and “My goodness!” and “Tsk!” as a river of chat (ideally gossipy chat) washes over me. I find it soothing. Otherwise I sit there in the silence feeling like I should make conversation, my mind frantically searching for something—anything!—to talk about. Last time I even resorted to discussing the haircuts of Katie Holmes and Victoria Beckham. But I’m not switching: I’ve had chatty stylists who should have been focusing more of their attention on TEH HAIR, so I’ll keep the awk silence and the consistently good cuts.

I have been thinking of going back to bangs. I can’t believe I’m even considering it, after the ordeal that was growing them out, and after revisiting those old photos of me where the bangs are parted like the Red Sea because of my cowlicks. I guess I’m not REALLY considering it.

My brain is a sieve whenever I see a hair stylist. That’s why I go to one who doesn’t speak much English. That way, the only language we speak is hair.

If you cut bangs I will personally fly out to..wherever it is you live (what? I don’t READ Swistle!) and sit on you. Also I need your hairstylist because mine chats like crazy but gives bad haircuts but the chat keeps me coming back.

I don’t know if this comment will help you or freak you out, but…it’s just hair. Whatever you decide to do, it will be reversible. It isn’t forever! That is the beautiful thing about hair. You can make a change and if you don’t like it, it’s okay!

I’m sorry, I don’t agree with the commenter above. Yes it’s “just hair,” but if you’re like me and about ninety percent of women everywhere, your hair has the capacity to make or break your mood/day/confidence level.
I’ve had both chatty and non-chatty stylists and I too prefer the chat as long as she pays enough attention to the task at hand. I’m very lucky now that we’ve moved back to my husband’s hometown – my sister-in-law is now my stylist, so not only do I get good (and free! she won’t accept money from me!) haircuts, we chat about FAMILY GOSSIP. Win-win.
    Have a great hair day!

I, too, had cowlicky bangs in high school, and then didn’t have bangs for years until a stylist I really trusted cut them the right way for me and my hair. I’m just throwing that out there.

I never know now to cut my hair. I usually end up getting the same cut so this time I decided to put a picture on my blog and ask people. Even though i’m not getting it cut until I go home the 16 I figure I could put it up really early and hopefully have some good ideas. I kind of don’t like the silence when getting a haircut. I feel like i’m supposed to be talking, but I never know what to say so I just sit there.

I pretty much get the same cut every time too – with different variations on bang, layering or color. Every single time I get bangs cut I like it for about a week – and then HATE it!!!! I think I’ve finally learned my lesson on that one and now just get some layering around my face so they can either look like long, sideswept bangs or I can tuck them behind my ears out of the way.

    I want to see pictures!!!!

I wish I would just call to get a damn appt, instead of cursing myself every night for not getting called in for an appt. And I have the stylist who is so perfectly chatty and talented that her appts are 3-4 weeks out. And I need a cut NOW, which has led me in the past to the cheap walk-in places that I leave in tears with bad haircuts. Sigh.
Going to call the salon RIGHT NOW.

You’ve just about convinced me that it’s time for a haircut. Except that it’s 3:30 on a Saturday and that won’t happen today.

I do wish the stylists I went to were more take charge. I hate my hair and never like it and just want them to fix it. And then talk to me while I contemplate how looking at my hair wet and in their mirrors makes me look really fat.

Nope, no talky stylist for me. I would rather sit there and enjoy the quiet (or listen to other conversations), sipping my wine or lemon water or tea. I would prefer that we had no conversation beyond what I want done to my hair. I spend way too much time listening to little people prattle on and on and saying Wow! and That’s really neat! and Good job! I want a strict NO TALKING time at the stylist.

(Um, that doesn’t happen. I go to a chatty stylist because I love how she cuts my layers and I suffer through small talk every couple months.)

Yeah, I’m not so much into the chatting either. In fact, I’m all “dear god, PLEASE don’t make me make small talk!” It makes me squirm. Fortunately, I only get my hair cut about once a year or so. (I go thru a lot of hair bands!)

Until my friend Megan started cutting my hair about a year and a half ago, getting my hair cut was the most awful, stressful thing I did, and as a result, I only did it about once a year. I was perpetually either too short or too shaggy, and it was terrible. Now, however, it is a lovely experience. Megan used to work at the most swanky hair place in these here parts, like $100 a cut, so my freebies are always wonderful AND free! Yippee!!!

I have gotten two haircuts in three years because I am so.so.so. unomfortable with the small talk. I just sit there staring in the mirror silently begging her not to talk to me.
