Personality Tests

I was so interested to read all the answers to yesterday’s We Don’t Know What They Mean personality tests. What I found most interesting was the way it was sometimes so easy to see both sides of the issue equally clearly. Like, with the candy question for example, why would anyone force themselves to eat candy they don’t even like?? That’s CRAZY! What a waste of calories/candy! But on the other hand, how could someone go through and pick out their own favorites, leaving the unbalanced proportions for everyone else, shrugging and saying, “I don’t eat what I don’t like”? That’s AWFUL! That’s so inconsiderate!

Candy assortments drive me crazy with their sweet “have it all!” promises and their “but never quite the way you want it!” follow-ups. I think the answer to that one is that people shouldn’t try to share candy assortments unless they’ve already established that they’re compatible assortment-sharers. In most cases, it’s better for people to buy their own assortments and share the leftovers: there’s a huge difference between “Hey, who left nothing but the Special Darks and Mr. Goodbars???” and “Hey, does anyone want my extra Special Darks and Mr. Goodbars?” This is why it’s so important to marry well. I like the pink, purple, and white jellybeans, and Paul likes the green, orange, yellow, and black jellybeans, and we agree to throw out the red ones. Happiness!

Ah, but the candy assortment you just used as an example works quite nicely where I work! We have a customer who, about twice a year, brings in a huge basket or two filled with all sorts of yummy things. Hershey’s assortment, dum dums, jolly ranchers, various other mini-candy bars. OF COURSE, the chocolate goes first, but I am fond of the mr. goodbars and nothing else. But other people like the special darks and I don’t.

See? one man’s junk is another’s treasure.

Of course, if it were between dum dums and special dark, I would choose the chocolate any day!

It totally works in friendships, too. One of my best friends and I are the perfect match for eating wings. She likes the legs, and I like the thighs. There are never any races to the “good ones!”

Exactly! I don’t know what the questions really say about my personality (or anyone’s), but so interesting!

I loved the questions, Swistle, it was so fun to respond to! I agree, you could see both sides for most of the questions.

My Martin just likes to eat everything, so we balance well because he’s not picky AT ALL. LOL. So I pick out some things I like, and then pass the rest to him and he finishes it. LOL.

And how do you NOT LIKE red jellybeans?!?! They’re my favourite!

(Pending we’re talking about a cherry/strawberry flavour and NOT cinnamon… if it’s cinnamon then I agree with you).

Where did the Personality Test questions come from if you don’t mind me asking?

no, no! Give ME all the red ones!!

PS – I think what the answers says is that we’re rarely black and white. Usually, we’re just like those mixed candies: A little of this, a little of that, and rarely a perfect blend of anything. But, with a little work and a little harmony (and maybe someone whose style compliments ours by loving all the candy we hate), we’re really all okay in the end.

Steph- The red ones do vary by brand, I admit, and sometimes I do like them—but mostly I think they taste like cherry cough syrup. Blick! The test questions were just a bunch of things I thought of over the same week or so: with my mom and me and the Philosophy pods, and then with buckling my seatbelt when I moved the car down the driveway—each time thinking, “I wonder what OTHER people do?”

OMG SEND MEE all the Reds! Seriously. I love them.

I also like pink and white like you, but NOT purple. NO.

My husband doesn’t eat candy- what a jerk! ; )

Good point. I only like a few (and I rarely eat them anyway… maybe more why I was on the side of eat what you like and leave the rest behind — it’s not like I’m going to eat ALL the Twix or anything!), and my husband will literally eat ANYthing. Yep, we’re a good match.

    Came upon this late.
#1: I’ll stay unless the movie is too excruciating for words. After all, maybe it will get better!

#2: so smart. I’m not pretty, never was, never will be, never wanted to be, never had any hopes in that direction, etc etc.

    #3: No. Maybe. probably not.

#4: I used to be a hoarder, but as I have become more “successful” in material things, I find myself using special stuff instead of hoarding it. I can still make a box of Samoas last for 3 weeks, though! Nyaah nyaah!

#5: It depends on how foul the not-like candy is. Generally I will eat all of a mix, but I’ll pick out (or leave) really nasty stuff like black licorice.

You and your husband are very fortunate to have such a symbiotic jellybean relationship. We should all be so lucky.

Me? I always have to fight my surprisingly scrappy husband for the Milky Ways and 3 Musketeers in the Halloween candy assortments.

I served up a dish of jellybeans at my sons birthday yesterday. At the end of the event the only ones left were…black ones! 8 people present and no-one eats the black ones. Go figure.

There has to be some conclusion you can draw about personalities from what kind of jelly beans you like.

My sister likes the red, white, purple and pink ones, and I like the orange, yellow, green and black ones. I can’t stand the ones she likes.

Growing up, we used to swap them. She is ten years older than me and when she moved out, I didn’t know what to do with the red, white, purple and pink ones. So sad. We used to swap a lot of other kinds of foods, too.

We’re opposites as far as personalities and political views so I’m sure there’s some kind of meaning here! Just wondering if anyone else has thoughts on this.
