Color Me Swistle

My mom likes Marshalls, so we went there on Saturday. I don’t usually like Marshalls: I’m always finding things that I like ALMOST enough to buy, but either I don’t like them QUITE enough or they’re just a LITTLE more expensive than I want to pay. Or it’s a brand I’ve never heard of, so I’m thinking, “Is this a ritzy bar of soap marked way down, or is this a cheap bar of soap that is made to LOOK like a ritzy bar of soap marked way down?” Or I’ll find something I like, but it’s in every size but the one I need. I find the whole store depressing.

But look what I found there on Saturday!

It’s a set of purse accessories: business card holder, lipstick case, and there’s also a round compact (not shown) that my mom has because the enamel piece had come unglued and she’s gluing it back on for me. (SPOILED MUCH?)

Do I NEED these? No. But the whole set was marked down to $5, and they’re satisfyingly heavy, and I….well, it was like my heart reached out for them and grabbed them with grabby little hands. I just WANTED them as soon as I saw them, so they came home with me. I’m going to have to get business cards now, I guess.

And do you notice something about the COLOR of those items? They’re Swistle-colored! (= same as the color of the blog background, for those of you reading this in an RSS reader!)

They ARE Swistle colored! I have to say, it’s been years since I have been to a Marshalls…but if the ones by me have cute things like that, I might just have to take a trip back there!

I have the same experience at Marshalls/ TJ Maxx – I will wonder around the store with 2 or 3 things of which I like a little and then I see the line or I look at the items again and I end up putting them back for the same exact reasons.

Those are lovely purse accessories though. The color is so great.

    HA! They suit you!

I am the same way with any of those discount stores. I *almost* like something enough to buy it, but then I have to ask myself “will I want to throw it out within the month?” and the answer is usually yes. TJ Maxx’s purses are the exception though. I bought a purse there a year and a half ago and still use it (Kathy Vonsomething or other brand).

Oh, I love those! Very pretty/girly and very much something your granddaughters will stumble upon in 50 years and think is a precious family heirloom. I have a whole drawfull of similar-looking items from my grandmother that I’m sure are junk but are precious to me.

I’m more of a TJ Maxx person. We have a super-fancy one nearby and I have better luck finding home decor than I do outfits. A friend of mine can spend hours there and come away with an entire wardrobe that looks like a million dollars. I just don’t have the eye, I guess!

Swistlisious! Also, that curlyque on them could very well be swistle shaped. I think we should name it on your behalf if it is not already taken.

So funny because my mother just ordered that I get my butt to Marshall’s immediately because that is where I will find Charlie’s birthday ensemble. She was just there and saw tons of great clothes. I know people say Marshall’s is the same, but I’ve always been a TJ Maxx kind of gal. Tomorrow, however, I’m off to Marshalls.

Jennifer- HA HA! I, too, imagined my grandchildren finding them and assuming value! Maybe I should write on them in Sharpie: “$5 at Marshall’s.” But they’d just assume that was sweet little-old-lady inflation, like when my grandma talked about buying a dress for $5 back when she was young.

Bird- You know, it’s funny: my mom likes TJ Maxx as well as Marshall’s, so we go both places, and I often see the exact same stuff in both stores, for the exact same prices. And yet I too feel a greater affection for TJ Maxx. Is it the catchy old theme song? “Na na na na, na na na na, TJ Maxx! Na na na na, na na na na, TJ Maxx! You get the max for the minimum—mimimum price! Never, EVER the saaaaaaaaame place twice! Na na na na, na na na na, TJ Maxx!” I love how they clarify: they mean minimum PRICE.

I love that heavy feeling to accessories like those. They feel so solid and real.

I am in the same boat with Marshalls. My sister lurrrves it. I find it frustrating and a little like a giant, more expensive version of a thrift store. Not that I have a problem with thrift stores. However, finding those pretty pieces might change my mind, because it’s highly unlikely you’d ever find THOSE at a thrift store.

My mom and my aunts love Marshalls–and I love that my aunt finds really good dairy-free dark chocolate there for Katherine. WHY is there good dairy-free dark chocolate at Marshalls? I don’t care to know. Just keep mailing it to us, Aunt Cathy.

You could put business cards in the holder, or you could do like I do and put sticks of gum in there (only I put mine in a silver cigarette case Jason found at an antique store). Classy!

That is AMAZING. They are THE EXACT SAME SHADE. I mean, if it weren’t for the rest of the photo and the little design things, you wouldn’t even be able to SEE THEM.

Well, I’m with P&D, I actually DO have business cards, but I keep BREATH MINTS in my business card holder.

I also know someone who keeps passwords to various things on a sheet of paper in hers. Which isn’t really all that smart, but TOTALLY something I would do anyway.

    Gum, though, that is genius.

oooh, sooo pretty!!!! I like discount stores when i have the time to sift through everything in them. I’ve had really good luck at Marshalls in particular with wall mirrors and curtains.
oh and about the soap . . . SO TRUE!

I never realized why I don’t find more at stores like Marshall’s, but you TOTALLY just explained it in that first paragraph. Totally.

Love the accessories. Love the Swistle color (I’m going to paint my bedroom that color one of these years…probably when it has gone out of style).

I’m not sure how you found my blog to comment, but I had to find yours. And you Crack. Me. Up. I am so with you on the bit that I’ve read so far. Not that I needed another blog to read….

But how do you find time to shop at all? I’m so jealous! I only have two, and I can’t even make an assessment of Marshalls or TJ Maxx or anything. Beautiful find!

Michelle- The two olders are in school, so I have just the three youngers—and I bring my mom, so it’s like one of us has two kids and one of us has one. Not too bad! Although, there are days when all the kids are crabby and grabby and it seems like there are twelve of them.

    Carolyn- Oh so cute!

Misguided- OMG you are a genius. GENIUS. And then I get to flash my cute card holder all over town, instead of hiding it in my purse!
