Reeling

You know what makes a great cleaning brush for faucets? One of those little soft baby hairbrushes they give you in the maternity ward of the hospital. A little hairbrush that will have lived at your house for less than two years by the time you bring home another little hairbrush. Oh, god.

I am still reeling from the news that I am unexpectedly expecting. I found out about the usefulness of that little brush during an adrenaline-fueled cleaning frenzy yesterday. I was restless and energetic, and couldn’t sit still or focus. The twins are still babies to me, and now there will be another baby. It is hard for that information to absorb. I’m letting it sit on my skin, waiting.

I’m glad I used some of that energy to clean the bathroom. I’ve been reading my old journals from the beginnings of my other pregnancies, and I see I can expect to be barfing soon, and relentlessly.

Paul is freaking out a little: how will we have enough time and attention for five children? and where will we put them all? and how will we afford them all? I am not freaking out about these things. I am focused on the impending barfing.

So i’m another devoted reader (killing time at work, shhh…) who is going back to the beginning and reading the archives, so i’m not even sure you’ll see this. I currently find myself in this boat that you were in a few years ago. I have b/g twins that are 16 months old and am expecting number 3 before they turn 2 (they’ll be 21 months). How can I have another baby when my babies will still be babies?!?! I wanted number 3, just not quite yet. I worry how they will react to a new little one. My little girl is rather, hm, enthusiastic (?) with affection, frustration, etc. and doesn’t seem to understand or like “gentle.” My son is a mama’s boy who needs lots of cuddles. Which is fantastic, but oh goodness. Just oh goodness. too many things to stress about.

I was going to offer reassurance, and then realized I barely remember how that time of adjustment went! But it MUST have turned out okay! I do remember a playpen for the twins being ESSENTIAL for keeping them safe while I was nursing the new baby. I got the North States Superyard; it looks like something similar/identical is sold under the Summer Infant brand. It was nice because they still had a ton of room to play (and it kept the toys contained); the downside is that it pretty much took up the whole living room! (WORTH IT.)
